Chapter 2

Kendrick smiled when she stumbled. She’d thrown him off the moment he heard her tiny gasp when she’d caught him in the middle of getting off. Instead of chasing her, he finished. She wasn’t wrong about him. He was a very sexual man, and no one got in the way of his release. He should probably remember to lock his office from now on. Apparently his new nurse didn’t think knocking was important.

She was hot as hell. She had that stern, sexy librarian thing going on. Her red hair was bright, long and slicked back into a tight ponytail on top of her head. Mixed with her bright green eyes covered by glasses, she was most men’s version of a wet dream. He struggled being around her. She smelled delicious and looked amazing with her large tits and a big ass that he’d love to spank. He wondered how long it would be before he would bag her, then run her off since he didn’t do relationships. She’d feel jilted. He shook his head. He didn’t fuck women in town—ever. So he sure as hell wouldn’t bag his new nurse, no matter how sexy he found her. People in town didn’t know about his private life, and he kept it that way for a reason.

As far as everyone was concerned he was the best doctor around, and he didn’t date. Everyone knew that. He never brought women home. None even knew where he lived. He was smart about his extracurricular activities. He’d do well to remember she was now a woman from town—meaning off limits. He sighed in relief. He kept to his rules easy, so it wouldn’t be hard to keep his hands to himself.

“I am usually booked from open to close six days a week. Thursdays I’m never here. It’s my one day off. Leslie usually worked a few hours just in case. I don’t expect you to do that. She only did that because she needed the money, and she grew up here and loves the people.”

“I can do that too if you want. I love helping people and since I don’t know anyone it’s not like I have any hot dates or anything.”

He heard the bitterness in her tone and realized she’d been burned recently. “I see. Well, not until I trust you. Maybe after a couple of weeks. For now let’s just see how this is going to work. I need to know how well we’ll be able to work together.”

“Fair enough. I want you to know that I take my work very seriously, and I shouldn’t have given you a hard time earlier. It was disrespectful. I guess it just surprised me to see something so private.”

Kendrick was surprised. Most women didn’t admit when they were wrong. He felt a stirring in his pants and wanted to groan. Apparently his body liked it too. Damn, she was going to make his life more difficult. “It’s okay. We can move on and see how you fit in around here. This town isn’t small, but everyone here still pretty much knows everyone else. It’s one of those kinds of towns. Newbies don’t always get accepted.” And yes, he realized how much of an ass he was being.

The happiness he saw forming behind her eyes fled, and she frowned. “Oh, well okay. I guess we’ll see.” She shoved invisible strands of hair from her face. “So uh, what do you want me to do this morning?”

“Just clean the rooms up and make sure everything has been sanitized. Leslie usually does, but I like to double-check. Better safe than sorry.” Then he walked away, leaving her to figure it out. Taking a deep breath, he felt her eyes boring into his back. If she didn’t like him, then it could work right? He glared down at his rising erection. He really didn’t think he had a problem. Normally, he was more controlled.

She didn’t call for him or anything. Instead, he heard her huff. He shouldn’t have been so rude, but at that moment, he needed to get away. When he went into his office he shut the door, this time locking it. He slumped in his chair and closed his eyes, taking deep breaths.

Kendrick didn’t like how he felt. She got a rise out of him that he hadn’t felt before, and he wasn’t sure what to do about it. But it was only the first day, and she’d caught him in the middle of something very private. That was the problem. She’d seen him butt naked, and she didn’t stare. Instead, she covered her face and ran away. It might have been a burst to his ego. He worked hard to keep his body in tip-top condition and every woman loved it.

After composing himself, he did his normal routine. He checked each of the rooms to make sure they were set up how he liked them. Peyton moved fast. By the time he got to the last room she was already up front cleaning the waiting area. She moved furiously, and he could see the tension in how she stood with a rigid back.

“You did well.”

She spun and glared. “Yippee for me.” Then she went back to work, dismissing him. He knew he’d pissed her off and he didn’t apologize easily.

So instead he ran a hand through his styled blond hair, messing it up. “It’s time to open. Jazzy should be here soon to man the desk.”

“Okay, where do I need to be?”

He shrugged. “In your office.”

“I have an office? Why?”

“Everyone needs their own space. It’s small, but it’s yours. It’s the room next to mine.”

“Okay, well I’ll excuse myself now until it’s time for the first appointment. I’m a nurse. I know what to do.”

“Jazzy can show you the set-up for charts.”

“Fine,” she replied and then stalked past him.

Her shoulder brushed against his arm and the scent of her perfume lingered in the air. He took in a breath and let it out. It was faint. He liked how she didn’t douse herself like a lot of women chose to do. He liked the natural scent of a woman.

Chapter 3

The day went smoothly. I met so many people, was told so many names, that my head literally spun. There weren’t any more uncomfortable encounters, and Kendrick and I were cordial to one another. No one would ever guess that I already hated their golden boy. He was an ass. I didn’t deserve to be treated so poorly, and I was starting to second-guess my move. I’d moved specifically to Salexis because of the job offer. There was nothing else tying me to the town.

As horrible as it sounded, I’d be taking Thursdays to explore and see what other options were there for me. I wouldn’t stay at a place where I wasn’t welcome. He’d made it perfectly clear that I probably wouldn’t be. So far everyone had been nice, but that didn’t mean anything. I’d learned long ago, not to trust the first meeting. It’s why I hoped things between the doctor and I would smooth out. He was probably embarrassed I’d caught him in such an… intimate position.

At five, when the last patient left, I went back to each room and cleaned them, much like I had in the morning. I was in my own little world until I felt his stare. I didn’t even bother giving him my attention. I had a job to do and I’d finish it. When he cleared his throat, I sighed but still kept cleaning. I’d just finished up the room and grabbed the cleaning bucket. When I went to leave, he blocked my path. Glaring at his chest, I licked my lips and tried to squeeze around him, but I was no bean pole. I had curves at every turn, and he was not a small man. He was nearly a foot taller than me and built like a fucking linebacker. Okay, so I was exaggerating, he was built though.

“Excuse me,” I said and moved over to the other side, hoping he would let me go. I was tired, hungry, and a little put off by him. I also hated how hard it was not to watch him when he was nearby. He was sexy, and I couldn’t get the lines of his abs out of my head. His body was lickable. It had been far too long since I’d actually wanted sex, but he made me think dirty things, which only pissed me off.

“You should acknowledge when I’m trying to talk to you.”

I laughed. “You didn’t talk you cleared your throat and expected me to talk. It’s been a long day and I’m tired, so just let me finish the cleaning so I can go home.”

“Okay, well I’ll see you tomorrow then.”

He seemed to want to say something more, but instead he moved to the side, just enough for me to squeeze by. My body brushed against his and I gasped. All I felt was rock-hard muscle as he tensed next to me. “Good night, Boss.”

I kept walking, ignoring the feeling building up inside. I didn’t want to feel anything. Not for him. He wore his arrogance like a blanket, and I knew there was something about him that screamed heart-breaker. I wouldn’t go down that road again. It was easier to keep disliking him than realizing I liked him too much.

Walking out into the setting sun was a relief. The breeze was cool and the sun didn’t blind me. There were people milling around, all doing their own thing. This town wasn’t huge, but it was still homey. I already liked it and hoped I’d be staying.

* * * *

I went to the local supermarket, knowing I’d need food and lots and lots of wine. By the time I made it home, I knew there was no way I’d be doing much work around the house. It was a mentally exhausting day and after driving for hours I needed to decompress. My cell phone lit up, and I sighed when I saw Jesse’s name. I hit ignore, but that didn’t stop him. Less than two minutes later, he sent a text. It was much like the others:

Baby I miss you pls take me back

Ignore. Yep, I was done and I didn’t know why he didn’t get it. I’d told him I hated him and I packed up and left to get away from him. I hadn’t changed my number, because I didn’t want to go through the hassle of contacting everyone, but if he didn’t stop soon, I would have no choice.

My phone lit up again and I groaned thinking it would be him, but it wasn’t. It was my mom.

“Hey Mom,” I said, and felt the tears blurring. What was it about hearing a mother’s voice that brought out the emotions in people? I hadn’t talked to her much.

“Hi baby. Tell me, how did it go?”

I laughed. “It was terrible, actually.”

“Why?”

I nibbled my lip, wondering if I should spill it all. “Well—I accidently saw my boss.”

Silence. “Okay? I’m not sure where there is a problem.”

“Naked. He was in his office and I walked in without knocking—stupid, I know—and he was, uh—pleasuring himself.”

My mom’s laugh didn’t make me feel better at all. “He was doing that at work?”

“I guess so, but after that, it sort of made things a little tense to start. He’s kind of a jerk, and his personality doesn’t seem to match the praise I’d heard before accepting the job.”

“Honey, give the man a break. You saw something you certainly shouldn’t have. Did you freak out?”

“Well yeah, it’s not like I planned on walking in on him.”

“So you bruised his ego?”

“How?”

“Well you probably ran off right?”

“Yeah.”

“So because you didn’t peek, like a man would have, he assumes you found something unappealing about him. Makes sense. He probably is one of those men that expect a woman to pant after him.”

I groaned. “Well, he is worthy of some panting. I did see that he’s very attractive.”

“Don’t go there. He’s your boss.”

“Duh, Mother. But I need to go. I’m tired, and I hope tomorrow is better.”

“Good luck, sweetheart.”

“’Night.” Then I hung up and sighed.

She was right. I covered my face and ran away. He probably was offended. Then I gave him a hard time. Yep, I’d screwed myself. He’d never like me now. But what did I care? I didn’t want him to like me, did I?

Chapter 4

Kendrick made sure he locked his door, even though he wasn’t doing anything questionable. He didn’t want a repeat of the day before. After he’d gone home, he realized he couldn’t get his new employee out of his mind. He actually worried she found him unattractive. She didn’t react to him like most women did. If anything, she seemed to care less about his physique.

Then he went into asshole mode and treated her like shit. He’d be lucky if she even showed. It would serve him right. He already had a plan. If she didn’t come to work, he’d go to her house. If she did, well, he’d buck up and apologize for being a prick. All of the patients commented about how sweet she was and that she was knowledgeable and had a great bedside manner. He needed to keep her.

The fact that he’d ended up jacking off to her face was a bit off-putting. She wasn’t his usual type. Not that he didn’t find curvy woman attractive—he did—but it was more because of their conflicting personalities. He found himself thinking about her all day, after work, in his sleep, and first thing when he woke up. That wasn’t him. He didn’t think about women. It was why he kept everything separate.

Tapping his foot, he found himself watching the clock, waiting for her to show up. And after ten minutes, he pushed out of his chair and pulled open his door, wondering if he’d lost her. When he went into the waiting room, he looked out and saw her car. How did he not hear her come in? Instead of staring, he stalked down the hall and then he found her wiping down the counters in one of the rooms.

“Good morning.”

She glanced at him and nodded. “’Morning.”

He braced himself and leaned against the door. “Listen, I don’t really apologize that often, but yesterday I was an ass. I shouldn’t have treated you poorly.”

She smirked and her eyes lit up, making his heart pound. “You still haven’t.”

He glared and ran his hand through his hair, something he seemed to do around her. “Fine, I’m sorry. I wasn’t very kind to you yesterday.”

“Apology accepted. And again I’m sorry. I realize now I must have offended you as well.”

He raised a brow. “Offend me? How?”

She shrugged. “By running off and not gaping at you.”

Before he could stop himself, he asked the question that had bothered him all night. “Well, why didn’t you? Look, I mean?” He felt his cheeks heat and felt like a damned fool. He was thirty-two for fuck’s sake.

She licked her lips and her attention was back on scrubbing the counter. “I did,” she whispered.

He stepped into the room and took the two steps to crowd her space. He shouldn’t have. She smelled fresh and amazing. His hand covered hers, stopping her motions. “Oh?”

She froze and her eyes latched to his hand on hers. He felt her shake before she looked up at him. “Of course I saw. You’re kind of hard to miss.”

“So you find me attractive then.” Statement. He knew he was good-looking.

“I didn’t say that.”

“Ouch.”

She shrugged and pulled her hand out from his. “You’re a little on the cocky side, Doctor.”

“I know women like me. I haven’t found one yet who didn’t. And you’re no different. You’re just better at hiding it.”

He knew he should shut up and stop talking, but instead he kept shoving his foot in deeper. He leaned in and ran his nose along her ear. “I think it only shocked you because you wished you were in there, taking care of me like a woman should.”

She gasped and her green eyes glared at him. “I suggest you move out of my space right now before you find yourself in need of some medical attention.”

He was shocked by the venom in her tone and quickly backed away. Yeah, he pushed it too far, but she was so blasé about him. Most women would have swooned and followed him around.

“Admit it. You find me attractive.”

She planted her hand on her hip and licked her lips, scanning his body. “Physically, sure. I’d fuck you. But your personality leaves something to be desired. That’s more important than a hot body.”

The tension rose at her vulgar words. She eyed him like a piece of candy while insulting him, and he still found himself raging for her. “Your mouth’s too pretty to talk like that, Peyton.” He moved back into her space and instantly her body tensed, but she didn’t hit him. Instead, she surprised the hell out of him and cupped him, squeezing his dick. His eyes rolled back. “What are you doing?”

She turned the tables and shoved him back until his back hit the wall, pressing her body against his. The feel of her tits elicited a groan. Her hand still cupped him, and now she massaged him through his scrubs.

“This is what you wanted, right?” She slid her other hand up his chest and wrapped her hand around the back of his neck and pulled him down to her height before pressing her lips to his.

He didn’t know what to do. The shock took over and he kissed her back before he realized he was at work—his work. He yanked his mouth from hers and groaned when he saw how beautiful she looked. Her green eyes had darkened with dilated pupils. Her chest heaved, and he knew she was feeling the same thing he did.

“This is not the time or the place.”

She shrugged and licked her lips before narrowing her eyes on his erection. “Your office then?”

At first he went to say no, but then he realized he wanted to say yes. For the first time he wanted to fuck someone a little too close to home. She already didn’t like him so he knew she wouldn’t feel jilted.

“No hard feelings after?”

She shook her head and smiled. “None whatsoever.”

He nodded. “Let’s go. I want you bent over my desk while I fuck you from behind.”

She gasped at his words and hurried around him. He watched the sway of her hips as she looked over her shoulder and winked at him. “Come get me then, Doctor. I’ve been naughty.” Then she disappeared in his office like she owned the place.

Ah, hell. Things just got complicated. She was pretty much the perfect woman. So far he’d never found one that liked to play.
