In an effort to fabricate a more ancient connection, the Arab world has claimed that “Palestinian” Arabs are descended from the Philistines, from whom the name “Palestine” is derived. However, there is no historical or cultural connection between the Philistines and the “Palestinian” Arabs. The Philistines were one of the “Sea Peoples"; they originated in Cyprus, Crete, or southwest Asia Minor. They spoke a proto-Greek language, and were related to the Phoenicians and Carthaginians. The “Palestinian” Arabs of today bear no cultural or ethnic relationship to the ancient Philistines, who were wiped out by the Assyrian and Babylonian conquests (eighth century B.C. and sixth century B.C., respectively). See, e.g., Trude Dothan and Moshe Dothan,
People of the Sea

The Search for the Philistines
(New York: Macmillan, 1992); Michael Grant,
The History of Ancient Israel
(New York: Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1984), pp. 67-68. It is critical to note that the Philistines are not mentioned in either Philip K. Hitti,
History of the Arabs,
10th ed. (London: Macmillan/St. Martin’s Press, 1970); or Albert Hourani,
A History of the Arab Peoples
(Cambridge, MA: Belknap/Harvard, 1991). If “Palestinian” Arabs were descended from or related to the Philistines, it surely would have been mentioned in at least one of these comprehensive histories of the Arabs. Since the myth of “Palestinian” descent from the Philistines has been debunked, the “Palestinians” have claimed that they are descended from the Canaanites. Recently, the Saudis have asserted that the Jebusites migrated to Jerusalem from the Arabian Peninsula in 3000 B.C. However, as with the claim of “Palestinian” descent from the Philistines, there is no historical or archaeological evidence to support these assertions. Neither of these theories is mentioned in Hitti,
History of the Arabs,
or Hourani,
A History of the Arab Peoples.

Between ca. 925 B.C. and 586 B.C., a succession of Jewish kings ruled the independent kingdoms of Israel and Judah. During the second and first centuries B.C., the independent state of Judea was ruled by the Hasmonean dynasty, descendants of the Maccabees. During the rest of that three-thousand-year period, the land was a tiny sliver ruled from a distance by a succession of empires: the Assyrians, the Babylonians, the Persians, the Greeks, the Romans, the Byzantines, the Arabs, the Crusaders, the Mamluks, and finally the Ottoman Turks.

Although there were anti-Jewish riots in 1921 and 1922, the beginning of the Arab terror war against Jewish nationalism can be traced to 1929, when Arabs destroyed the centuries-old Jewish community of Hebron, the site of the tomb of the Jewish Patriarchs. Sixty-four Jews were murdered and the remainder were expelled. At the same time there were Arab riots against Jews in Jaffa, Safed, Acre, and other communities. Hundreds more Jews were murdered. There were numerous other outbreaks of violence against Jews throughout the British Mandatory period.
