If it was true, and he still highly doubted it, he’d never practiced, only wanting to be a farmer, a human being who lived by normal rules. He’d never wanted to bend or twist nature for his own gains, and he’d certainly never wanted to use it against another person.

He believed Sorin was correct in thinking his family wanted to use him, whether he was able to do what they wanted or not was another matter. He was already damned, but the thought of assisting them in their atrocities stripped away every last shred of his will to carry on, even if it meant saving Serena and the baby.

“I don’t know if I can work for them,” he said, his chest aching unbearably.

His cousin reached over and took his reins, pulling the horse closer to his own. He glanced at his father, who still lumbered on, far ahead of them, secure in the knowledge that there was nowhere for them to run where he couldn’t catch them.

“Of course you’re not going to work for them, stupid,” Sorin said, the years stripped away with the appearance of the same impish smile Kostya remembered when they played together as children. “You’re going to work against them.”

Kostya’s stomach lurched and he reached for his reins, but Sorin kept them in a tight grip.

“You’re mad,” he said, giving up and staring down the endless road.

“No, I’m not,” he said, lowering his voice, even though he clearly bubbled with excitement. “There’s a group of us, big enough to make a difference. We’ve been planning, waiting for you to come back. Grandmother’s going to keep you ignorant and feed off your power, hang you upside down and drain you like a pig. But now you know the truth, you’re not going to put up with that, are you?”

“I wouldn’t like to, no,” Kostya said distastefully, knowing the vivid imagery that Sorin spun wouldn’t be far off the mark of what was in store for him.

Sorin’s enthusiasm was infectious, and even though he was exhausted to his soul, he couldn’t help but feel a twinge of it rub off on him. It was better than the hopelessness and fear.

“Good, then.” He let go of Kostya’s reins. “We won’t live this way anymore,” he promised. “We’ll take them down at last.”
