I laughed and shook my head as we climbed into the SUV and Spencer put it in drive, heading towards the road.

Chapter
17
Emily

As we pulled into the driveway at the townhouse and Spencer put the car in park, I turned to him and said, “Please be on your best behavior. Remember: she’s my best friend.”

He stared back at me wide-eyed like he had no idea what I was talking about and I shot him a look to let him know I was serious.

“Okay, okay,” he said, holding his hands up. “Yes, ma’am.”

Even though I’d talked to Bridget through text the day before, I hadn’t had a chance to explain everything that had happened and where I’d run off to. All she knew was that I was okay and that I’d basically just disappeared for days. This was going to be…interesting, to say the least and I dreaded ringing the doorbell.

As we stood there on the front step, Spencer looked at me. “Are you okay?”

I nodded, taking a couple of deep breaths. “I’m just a little nervous. Will you ring it?” I asked, nodding to the doorbell.

He looked at me with a confused look, “Don’t you have a key?”

I shook my head no. “It’s in my purse, which is inside.”

“Oh, right,” he said with a nod and then without hesitation, reached forward and pressed the button.

Literally two seconds later Bridget flung the door open in mid-sentence and said, “You know you can just come—,” her voice trailed off when she saw my face. “Holy shit! What happened to you, Emily? Was it
this
fucker?” she accused, flailing her hands at Spencer.

“No! Stop, Bridge. I’m fine. It wasn’t Spencer. But it’s a long story. Can we come in?” I asked with a hopeful smile.

She was speechless for a second, but then she stepped aside to let us pass, eyeing Spencer shiftily as he walked by her.

“I think we should all go talk in the living room,” I suggested. “This is going to take awhile.”

She nodded and Spencer and I followed behind her as she led the way.

After I’d explained everything to Bridget—the unknown pregnancy, the miscarriage, Calvin abducting me, my parents coming to visit…every little detail—she just sat there silently in shock.

Finally she said, “Oh, my God, Emily…” her words barely audible.

“Yeah, it’s a lot to take in, I know,” I whispered, nodding my head.

“I’m so, so sorry I wasn’t there for you. I should have been there,” she sobbed, tears slipping down her cheeks.

I scooted closer to her, then, wrapping an arm around her shoulders. “No, stop it. Shh,” I whispered, patting her hair. “This wasn’t your fault, Bridge.”

Through her tears she blurted, “I’m just so happy you’re okay.” She sniffled her nose trying to pull herself back together.

“Me too,” I said with a smile.

“We all are,” Spencer agreed. It had been the first thing he’d said since we’d arrived and we both turned to look at him, the sound of his voice a surprise. I smiled at him, thankful for his support.

But the happy reunion was short lived when Bridget turned sharply to Spencer and said, “So, let me get this straight: I was scolded and shunned because I somehow lost her at a noisy, crowded club. And you simply just left her alone to fend for herself, knowing that your brother was out there basically
hunting
her? Un-
fucking
-believable,” she scoffed, a look of pure disgust on her face.

Spencer glared back at her, clenching his jaw.

“Hey, stop it!” I said, holding up a hand and glancing between the two of them. “Both of you. That’s enough! This ends
now.
Whatever is going on between you two, it’s over.
Neither
of you are responsible for me. Whatever has happened, happened for a reason and it wasn’t anyone’s fault but mine. So stop blaming yourselves and stop blaming each other. Got it?!” I yelled, throwing my hands in the air in annoyance.

They both stared at me, their mouths hanging open in shock, unable to do anything but nod.

Finally Spencer replied, “Yes.”

“Good. Bridget, what about you? Can you agree that this is all in the past?” I asked her.

She nodded and said nervously, “Yeah. I’m sorry, Em.”

“Awesome! There’s just one more thing I need to tell you…” I said to her, my words trailing off.

She looked at me and then at Spencer. “What? What else can there be?” she asked, exasperated.

“Spencer asked me to move in with him. And…I’m going to. I mean, I have. I just need to pack up some of my things,” I explained, looking to Spencer.

“Oh,” she said, her shoulders falling forward, unable to hide her disappointment.

“Yeah, I…just wanted to tell you in person,” I said sheepishly.

She nodded. “Yeah, that’s cool. I get it. It makes sense,” Bridget said, attempting to play it cool. But I could tell she was sad about it.

“I promise it’s nothing personal. It just…feels right. You know?” I asked, hopeful that she would understand.

She nodded. “Of course. I’m happy for you,” she said with a tight smile. I could tell it was forced, but I wasn’t going to push the subject. Bridget stood up then and patted her hair, wiping the remaining tears from her cheeks. “I actually need to get going. I have work?” she said, like it was a question that she wasn’t sure about.

“Oh, right. I’m sorry we were late. I was just sending my parents off. Didn’t mean to keep you,” I apologized with a smile.

“No worries,” she replied, busying herself and gathering her things. “You have a key, right?”

I nodded. At least, I was pretty sure I did.

“Well, if you ever need me you know where to find me,” she said curtly.

“Yeah. Hey, Bridge? We can still hang out and be friends. This doesn’t mean that I’m going anywhere, you know?”

She nodded, “Yeah, of course.” But her tense smile said otherwise. And as she headed for the door, she called out, “I’ll see you around, Em.” And then she was gone. Just like that.

As I stared at Spencer, I couldn’t help but wonder if maybe that was the last time I’d ever see Bridget and a part of me felt like maybe I was making a huge mistake.

*****

Once we had really got down to it, I realized Spencer had been right: I should have let him hire the movers. But the more I sorted through all the stuff in my old room, the more I realized it wasn’t stuff that I really
wanted
to bring with me, anyway.

As I stood there in the middle of what used to be my bedroom, it all just seemed so surreal. I felt like I had aged twenty years in the past two days. I was an entirely different person and none of this
stuff
seemed appropriate anymore. All the clothes, shoes, books, bedding…it all just seemed so childish. I wasn’t that girl anymore and I never would be again.

So aside from the few pictures and and personal belongings that I cared about, I decided to purge everything else and give it to the thrift store.

I packed up the last of the boxes of junk that I wasn’t keeping and stacked them against the wall  and then stood in the middle of the room taking everything in.

I’d left the comforter and sheets on in case Bridget decided to get a new roommate.
It was the least I could do,
I thought.

I stared at the empty, unfamiliar space that used to feel like home and so many memories flooded back into my mind. It really was the beginning of a new chapter in my life—maybe even a new book.  And although part of me felt a little sad about it, I knew that it was the right thing for
me.

“Hey babe,” Spencer whispered softly into my ear, as he snuck up behind me wrapping his arms around my waist. He’d been carrying boxes up and down the stairs for about thirty minutes and his breathing was labored.

I smiled and leaned back against him, thankful he was here with me. I repositioned myself so that I could get a better look at him, noticing that he’d removed his shirt now to cool off, his bare chest and chiseled abs catching my eye as they glistened with sweat.

I stood up on my tiptoes to give him a kiss and then whispered seductively, “You’ve been working so hard, haven’t you?”

He nodded, doing his best to give me puppy dog eyes.

“I thought so,” I said with a smile. “Do you think you’ve earned yourself a reward?”

He shook his head up and down excitedly and replied, “Oh, yes. I’ve been a very good boy.”

I giggled and bit my lip. “Hmm. Well, maybe it’s time for your payment…” I said, kneeling down in front of him so that my face was at crotch level.

He swallowed, looking down at me and then nodded, “I think that sounds like a
really
good idea.”

I grinned and undid the button on his khaki shorts, unzipping them so that they fell to the floor. Then, I reached up and pulled down his boxers, his cock springing to attention.

I smiled up at him and took his shaft in my hand, gently rubbing it up and down. As I stroked him, Spencer let out a loud moan and rolled his head back in ecstasy.

“Do you like it?” I asked innocently, biting my lip.

He nodded as he raised his head again to look at me. “Yes,” he whispered, “very much so.”

And then, without warning, I took his rock hard cock between my lips and sucked, bobbing up and down the entire length, making sure no part went untouched.

Spencer must have approved because he grabbed the back of my head and pushed himself deeper inside my mouth, harder and faster until my lips were touching the base of his cock, each thrust causing me to gag, turning him on even more.

After a minute or so of my wet mouth massaging his shaft, he let out an animalistic moan and with one final thrust, his hot juices flowed down the back of my throat and I swallowed every last drop quickly and obediently.

“Wow,” he breathed as he stepped back, pulling his boxers back up and then fastening his shorts again. “That was amazing, babe,” he said with a smile as he stroked my hair. Then he held out his hand to help me up to my feet.

I smiled proudly, standing on my feet again. “Was that a good enough payment for all your hard work?” I asked, beaming at him.

“Yeah, I think that about covers it,” he said with a laugh and a wink, running his hand through his thick locks. “You about ready to go?”

I smiled at him and shook my head yes. Then after a moment I said, “Almost. Just give me a second, okay?”

“Sure. I’ll be downstairs,” he replied with a knowing look, stroking my cheek gently.

I nodded and he turned, happily grabbing the second to last box and then made his way back down the stairs.

As I stood there in the middle of my old room, taking it all in one last time, I felt a mixture of sadness and hope come over me. Sadness, because it felt like a part of me was dying and hope, because I knew that something good would grow from this. It had to.

Besides, it wasn’t like Bridget and I weren’t friends anymore, it was just time to move on. That’s what adults did, right?

So, with that thought, I let out a deep breath and grabbed my last box of stuff to take to the thrift store. The room was now empty except for my desk and the bed, both of which I had decided to leave for Bridget. It was a clean slate and it felt good.

With one final look, I closed the door to my old life and stepped into the new. I just hoped the past would finally stay put.

Chapter
18
Emily

Later that night as I waited in bed for Spencer to get done brushing his teeth, I had a fit of anxiety about the fact that tomorrow was Monday and that meant going back to work. At Ford Enterprises. It wasn’t so much that I couldn’t physically do the work that would be required of me—I
could
. But the thought of stepping foot in there again scared the hell out of me.

All I could think about was what had happened the last time I was there and how Calvin had tricked me into thinking he was Spencer in order to take advantage of me. It made me sick to my stomach and I could feel sweat beading up on my forehead just thinking about it.

Spencer climbed into bed next to me and gave me a kiss on the cheek. When he got a good look at me, though, concern flashed in his eyes and he said, “Woah. Are you okay?”

I swallowed the thick feeling that had formed in my throat and closed my eyes, taking in deep breaths, trying to erase the nauseousness that had settled in the pit of my stomach. I shook my head no.

“What is it, babe?” he asked, worry in his voice.

“I just…don’t feel very good,” I breathed, looking at him with wild eyes.

“I can see that. What’s going on?”

“I don’t think I can go to work tomorrow, Spencer. I’m so sorry,” I said, the sickness in the pit of my stomach now mixed with guilt.

Spencer let out a small laugh and said, “Emily, sweetheart. I never in a million years expected you to be coming back to work tomorrow.” He pulled me close, tucking me into his arm as he kissed the top of my head.

“You didn’t?” I squeaked.

“Of course not. It’s much too soon. You need time to heal, physically
and
emotionally,” he said, with so much love and understanding that it brought tears to my eyes. In a softer voice he said, “Hell, if you don’t want to step foot in Ford Enterprises ever again, I wouldn’t blame you, babe. It’s hard for even
me
to want to go back there knowing what I know, now.” He shook his head in disgust.

“Really?” I asked, tilting my head up to look at him.

“Of course. Part of me wishes I could just sell the company and start all over—somewhere else, something new. Just a fresh start, you know?”

My heart dropped, wondering if that meant me, too.

“No,” he said with a smile.

“No, what?” I asked, blushing.

“That doesn’t include you,” he replied, hugging me closer to him.

I laughed, “How’d you know that’s what I was thinking?”

“I always know what you’re thinking, Emily Anne. Nothing you do or think escapes me,” he said with a wink.

“I wouldn’t doubt it,” I teased. “You
are
a stalker.”

“Hey!” he exclaimed. “That was
one time.
I’m never going to live that down, am I?”

I shook my head no and smiled. Even though I gave him crap for it, I secretly loved that he was so overprotective of me. After a few moments of silence, I whispered, “Hey, Spencer…”

“Yeah?” he asked, repositioning himself so he could see me better.

“Did you hire a new assistant?” I wondered aloud. I couldn’t believe the thought hadn’t crossed my mind until now. I mean…I’d just up and left months ago and never even really started in the first place. Obviously he had
needs.
If I wasn’t around, it would be only natural for him to seek the company of someone else.

“Of course not,” he replied, shocked that I would even suggest it. “Emily, I’m with
you.
And I’m a lot of things, but I’m definitely not a cheater,” he said, his mouth forming a straight line to indicate his seriousness. “Do you really think I’d do that?”

I was surprised that he was so hurt by my question. “Well, I mean…we were apart for months, Spencer. I wouldn’t really consider that cheating, would you?”

“Emily, sweetheart, ever since I first laid eyes on you, I’ve been yours. No one else has stood a chance,” he said sincerely, taking my hand in his as he caressed my fingers. “And as corny as this might sound, even when we were apart, we were together in my heart. There is no way I would have been able to do that to you.”

I had never heard Spencer be so gushy when it came to his feelings for me and it only reaffirmed that I’d made the right decision by moving in with him. I still couldn’t believe that this was my life now—that
he
was and I smiled at him, giving him a peck on the lips.

But for once he didn’t return my advances and instead a distant look came over him. “Can I ask you a question?”

“Of course,” I replied guardedly. “What is it?”

“Why did you run out after our first night together? I felt like everything was going perfectly, but when I went out the next morning to get you breakfast I returned to an empty house. And then every time I tried to contact you you just ignored me. My heart was broken, Emily,” he whispered sadly. “I mean, I’m ecstatic that you’re back now, don’t get me wrong. I just need to understand why you left in the first place.”

I could feel the anger start to rise inside of me and I sat up quickly in the bed. “What do you mean? Spencer, you left
me
alone with
Calvin!
Even though you knew he was a demented freak.”

He stared at me like I had two heads. “No, I most definitely did not leave you alone with Calvin. Even before all of this shit came to light, I didn’t trust him. Especially not with you,” he explained. “So I’m not sure what you’re talking about.”

“He came into the room. Right here. While I was still lying in bed and threatened me. He nearly choked me to death,” I explained, getting more worked up than was necessary.

“Jesus, Emily. I had no idea. I swear he wasn’t in the house when I left. He had to have snuck back in somehow,” he said, sitting up in the bed to be closer to me. Then, he took my hand in his and placed it up against his heart. With his other hand he gently touched underneath my chin, redirecting my gaze so that we were staring into each other’s eyes.

“I promise, with all of my heart that I never would have intentionally put you in that situation.
Ever
. You have to believe me,” he pleaded, his eyes searching the depths of my soul for forgiveness. “I’m so sorry that all of this happened to you, Emily,” he whispered. “Please forgive me.”

I nodded, a tear slipping down my cheek. “I’m sorry, too. For running away. I should have told you the truth from the start. Maybe things would have gone differently.”

“Shh,” he said, wiping a tear from my face. “There’s no use thinking like that. What’s done is done.”

I took a deep breath and realized this might be my only opening to ask him the question that I had had on my mind as well. “There’s something I need to ask you, too…” I said, glancing at him nervously.

“Okay…” he said, unsure of what to expect, but I don’t think anything could have prepared him for what I said next.

And before I could chicken out, I whispered, “Who is Lauren?”

Staring at his face, he looked like he’d just seen a ghost or got the wind knocked out of him or maybe both. And that’s when I knew, without a doubt, that every detail Calvin had confessed to me had been horrifyingly true.
