I’d started to promise myself that I wouldn’t cry. I was all cried out from everything else, I didn’t think I had any tears left, but, a few trickled down my cheeks as I traced his name, his date of birth, his date of death.
“I know you didn’t choose to leave me. I know you would’ve done anything to change the outcome if you could have. I’m sorry for being so angry with you about that. I’ve never wanted to say good-bye either, but I don’t know how to keep going, to start something new, really start something new if I don’t.” I swiped at my eyes and sniffled as a breeze blew, ruffling my hair, the way he… The way he used to do, when he’d blow on my neck to make me shiver.
I lowered my head and smiled. He was somehow there. He was somehow with me and I knew…
Let me go.
I nodded, but I didn’t move. I didn’t know how.
Go to him. It’s time, little one.
The words whispered clear in my ear. No one spoke them out loud, but I heard them and I nodded. “Thank you, Sir.” Those words, mine, were said with trembling lips, quivering chin, and as tremulous a smile as I could muster. “Good-bye.”
I rose quickly, blew him one last kiss, and turned toward Jared.
Tim had been right. It was time…
