Chapter One: Road Rage

It’d taken her one second of inattention; one second spent staring at the man driving in the right lane.

One second of screaming inwardly because she’d recognized him and oh my god, there was Kevin McIntyre in the car next to hers!

Then the car in front of her had braked, she’d only noticed at the last possible second and had swerved to avoid it. She’d rammed into the one car she’d been so intently staring at instead.

They parked out of the way of the traffic, trucks speeding past them. She felt herself start to blush when her fantasy-came-to-flesh slid out of his car with a wince, his eyebrows drawn together.

Oh, she felt a shiver run up her back. He was striding towards her, his green eyes flashing. He might have only been wearing a black wifebeater and some beat-up jeans but he still looked hot. Her eyes took a tour of his body, loving the scuffed brown boots, the heavy leather watch wrapped around his left wrist and the earring twinkling in his right ear. Since when had he started wearing earrings again?

The thought left her as he stopped in front of her and opened his mouth, “What the fuck was that?”

“I got distracted, I’m-“

He cut her off, “You got distracted? Is that your excuse, lady?”

“Uhm, yeah?”

“That’s not fucking good enough!” She winced at his swearing. “This car is a rental! Do you see the state it’s in now? Do you?”

She did as ordered and took a glance at the car behind him. The whole left side was scraped, the back door looking bent. Not sure he could open that door again. Oops.

“I’m sure my insurance will cover the costs.” She tried to reassure him and herself.

“I don’t care about money! It’s the fucking principle! How did you even get a license?”

“I went to DMV and-“

“I can’t fucking believe this.” He grabbed his head in both hands.

“I’m sorry, Kevin. I promise I’ll pay for the damages. I’m really-“

“What did you call me?”

“Uhm, Kevin? That’s your name after all, right?”

He stared at her, “How do you know my name?”

She bit her lower lip before finally admitting, “I’m a fan.”

“Of course, you are,” he sighed. “Let me guess, you were watching me and not where you were going.”

“Maybe.” She fidgeted under his stare.

“Fuck,” he swore once again, making her wonder if he was like this on a daily basis.

She wasn’t sure she could live with someone who cursed that much. I mean, think of the children!

Shoot, back on track, stupid! This is not a dream and you are not having his babies! “I’m sorry.”

“Whatever. Do you even understand what you’ve done? And for what? Because I was in the car next to yours?”

She gasped at his words. Mostly because he was right. “Oh come on, it’s not my fault. You were sitting there and you looked-“

“It’s not your fault?” He erupted before she could finish her explanation. “Are you fucking kidding me?

You rammed into me, lady!”

“Yes but-“

“No, no.” He waved his hand in the air. “Let me guess! You’re a fan so that makes it all better!” Her mouth opened but nothing came out. The damn man was making fun of her! “What, nothing to say now?” he taunted her.

She knew she should have been upset with his behavior but really, he looked so hot. She’d always loved a pissy Kevin and that was just plain perfect. Of course, usually in her dreams, he’d sweep her off her feet and would carry her to his car/house/anywhere and have his way with her. Her face heated as she realized she hadn’t heard a word he’d said in the past five minutes, too focused on her fantasy of him hiking up her skirt and pushing inside her.

“Have you listened to a freaking word I’ve said?”

“Uhm, no?”

“Unbelievable,” he sighed, crossing his arms over his chest. “What’s your fucking problem now?”

Go for it! Go for it! Her mind chanted and she tightened her hands into fists. Looking up, she said, “I’m sorry, I can’t concentrate with you looking so good.”

He gasped, “What the hell? So now it’s my fault?”

She thought about it then nodded.

She swore the top of his head blew off.

It took a while but he finally calmed himself down enough to speak, “We need to trade insurance info.”

“Oh yeah, sure.” She watched him walk back to his car. A truck careened down the road and she felt a huge airdraft blow her sideways. She squealed and looked back at the road. Too many trucks took it to cut through the mountains and it was known as one of the most dangerous in the state. She watched as another fourteen-wheeler sped towards them and she jerked in fear. Before she could stop herself, she’d run to her car and had locked herself inside.

“Hey!” Kevin appeared at her window a minute later. He banged on the glass until she turned the ignition on and it slid down. “What’s going on?”

She motioned to the road and the passing trucks. “I didn’t think it was safe to stay on the side of the road. Too many trucks. Do you want to get in?”

He shook his head wildly. “I ain’t getting into your car. With my luck, you’ll kidnap me because I’m your favorite quarterback or some other shit.”

“Oh.” She blinked at his assumption. Come to think of it, that was a pretty good idea. She could take him to an isolated location somewhere and handcuff him to the bed, and have his way with him for hours on end. What a brilliant plan! She beamed up at him then realized he was staring at her as if she’d gone crazy. “Uh, I would never do that,” Of course not. Uhmmm. “but we can’t just stay here. It’s too dangerous. This road is-“

“I know. Let’s drive somewhere else and park where we won’t bother anyone.”

She nodded, “Good idea. I’ll drive, you follow.”

“No, I-“

She didn’t give him a chance to respond as she simply drew the window back up. Then she waved at him through the glass and watched his face redden once again. Ohhh, angry again. Go her!

She grinned as she watched him walk back to his car in her rear-view mirror. It looked like he was swearing under his breath and it was just too funny. And hot. Don’t forget hot.

She waited for his headlights to blink on then managed to get back onto the road without too much problem. His car quickly followed and she wondered where she could go. He just wanted to trade insurance information and then he’d be on his way but this was her once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. She sure as heck wasn’t going to let him leave so soon! What to do. What to do. Spotting a side road, she braked and took a right turn so sharply gravel spit against the sides of her car. She looked in the mirror and grinned when she spotted Kevin behind the wheel, looking mightily pissed. Oh my god, she was too good at this!

She kept on driving, ignoring his signals until she thought it was desert enough. Trees loomed over them when she finally slowed the car down and directed it to a small parking lot meant for hikers and hunters. She parked and slid out, wondering what she should do next.

He didn’t give her enough time to plan however as he came careening out of his car and started screaming at her. “Are you fucking nuts?”

“Why?” She frowned.

“Did you have to drive so far from the main road?”

“But I thought you said we should park somewhere where we couldn’t bother people? There’s no one here so we won’t bother anyone.”

“I meant park at a road-side café, a McDonald’s! Anywhere but here!”

“Oh, then you should have been clearer.”

“You cut me off! You rolled up your fucking window before I could-“

“Sorry, I thought you were in a hurry and those big trucks were scaring the hell out of me.”

His hands tightened into fists. “You, lady, are crazy.”

“Ugh.” She crossed her arms over her chest and leaned back against the side of her car. Which unbelievably enough had barely a scratch on it from their earlier collision. Was she good or what?

“That’s not a very nice thing to say.”

“I’m not in the mood to be nice or polite. Now hand over your insurance papers so we can finish this thing and I can be on my way.”

She looked at the hand that had appeared in front of her. “Insurance papers. Right!”

She made a big show out of getting back into her car and rummaging through her purse. Then she emptied it on the passenger seat and sifted through the mess. No insurance documents. Not even her license. So where in hell had she put them? She was pretty sure she’d had them the last time she’d been pulled over by a cop.

Her door wrenched open, Kevin leaning down over her with a growl, “What the fuck is taking so long?”

“I can’t find them. I’m sure I had them with me the last time I took this car. I’m sure of it.”

“Then find them! Now!”

“I’m trying!” she replied, her hands starting to shake.

“Oh for god’s sake!” He hurried around the car and opened the passenger door. Kneeling in the dirt, he started looking through her stuff and paused when his fingers picked up a box of condoms.

“I like to be prepared,” she said in the tense silence.

He looked up at her then shaking his head, let it drop back onto the seat. “Where’s your license?”

“I don’t know. I can’t find it either but I’m sure it’s with the insurance docs.” She smiled at him and watched as he banged his head against the door. Several consecutive times.

* * * *

“I must have left them at home.” She looked at the interior of her car, all messy thanks to Kevin. He’d opened all the pockets, had pushed everything to the floor so he could sift through them but no license had appeared. No insurance papers either.

“You only remember this now?” he said through gritted teeth. Night had fallen while they were searching for the documents and her car’s interior light wasn’t strong enough to make his features clear.

She could hear the anger in his voice though. Shivers ran up her spine as she imagined him grabbing her and throwing her onto the backseat. Then he’d push up her skirt and his hands would-

“Are you listening to me? Fuck, what did I do to deserve this?”

She blinked back to the present and watched as he kicked her front tire. “Hey!”

“What?” He whirled around and stepped towards her, fury radiating from his every pore. “What do you want us to do now?”

She bit her lower lip before she could tell him exactly what she wanted them to do. In detail. “Do you want to go to my place so we can retrieve those papers?”

“No,” he snapped back. “I want you to go there and drive back with them. Or even better, give me your address and your house keys.”

She blinked up at him, “What? Why?”

“I’ll go get them myself.”

“That doesn’t make any sense. I don’t even know where I’ve left them!”

“You don’t?” She shook her head. He swore again, “Damn it! I had somewhere to be tonight, you know?”

“But it’s stil early. I mean, if we swing by my place and we find the papers then you can be on your way.” Until she found a way to make him stay, of course.

“Where do you live?”

“Up that hill,” she nodded towards a mountain in the distance.

“All the way over there?”

“Well, yeah. I have a cabin that I use during the weekends. It’s quite isolated but I have a guard dog and-“
