A noble, as it turned out, who happened to be a key figure the transition of Spanish loyalties away from France to England. It was speculated in the newspapers that this event could turn the war against the French. As a result, Captain and Mrs. Rawlings were given more invitations to attend social gatherings from the
Ton
they could possibly accept.

Jack, Rodrigo and the marquis were interviewed by the British admiralty and the war office, as British intelligence was anxious to know specific details of troop movements, strongholds and the names and whereabouts of Spanish militia hiding in the wilds.

The casualties of the coming war were not all in a distant land. Marta had become simple and disturbed after her ordeal in Marbella. Chloe kept Marta close, treating the girl like her beloved ward now rather than a servant. Marta still insisted she wanted to join a convent and become a Catholic nun. She took to carrying a Bible about everywhere, and a book of Catholic prayers. Chloe told her she must wait at least six months before making such a rash decision that would alter her life so. Chloe also sent word to Marta's father in the Indies so the man could come here to reason with his troubled daughter and perhaps take her home with him. Marta had a family who loved her, and they should be the ones to help her decide her future.

As the weeks went by, the adolescent girl was able to confide in her. Chloe was relieved to learn the girl had not been ravished by the guards as they assumed. After Chloe had been struck unconscious and taken away, Marta had been told that Chloe and Captain Rawlings had been killed his men at his orders. And then she was strangled repeatedly by the French captain until she was nearly unconscious, and then revived. Once revived, she was questioned by her cruel captor, strangled and questioned over and over until the poor girl was so broken in spirit and mind and would tell the man all she ever heard whispered about Chloe.

As for Uncle Miguel, when Chloe asked him why he had not turned his back on her after hearing of her dark past, his answer surprised her. He told her he knew about her status as a love child, as his younger brother had never mentioned marrying the mother of his beloved child in his letters. Uncle Miguel was so relieved to learn she had survived after all, he didn't care one whit about the circumstances of her survival. He'd assumed both his brother and the darling little Chloe he had heard about in letters years ago had died of some tropical illness. He did not expect a grown daughter of his beloved brother to show up at his villa in Marbella to rescue him from the French.

And so, four year old Angelica Rose O'Flaherty's prophecy came true for Chloe. By following her heart instead of her head, Chloe found true love, warm hugs, and gold in Spain.

Chloe found Jack, fell in love with the man, and married him. She found her uncle, who mourned her death all those years ago when he thought her lost to him. And she was made the Marquis heir, as he transferred his wealth to Chloe and her new husband as payment for rescuing him from certain death at the hands of the French.
