Note that IGF-1 is a protein hormone and many suggest that it should be broken down during normal digestion. However, there have been several studies documenting that IGF-1 levels are boosted in people who drink milk.

Body mass index (BMI) is defined as weight (in kilograms) divided by height (in meters) squared. A BMI between 19 and 25 is considered “normal,” between 25 and 30 is considered “overweight,” and 30 and above is classified as “obese.”

In cohort studies, a group (“cohort”) of people is followed over time. During the follow-up period, some individuals will be diagnosed with cancer and comparisons are made between those who are diagnosed with cancer and those who are not.

In case-control studies, individuals with a particular type of cancer (“cases”) are compared with otherwise similar people who have not been diagnosed with cancer.
