She moaned at the contact. His teeth grazed the nipple, and his tongue never ceased its tantalizing pressure. He massaged her other breast, his thumb working her nipple in a maddening way, and she put her hand over his head to encourage him. He pushed her back on the bed and flipped her over, unzipping her skirt before pulling it down. She started to turn back over, but he kept her on her stomach. He ran his fingers up and down her spine. Then he slid his hand over her ass.

“Do you have any idea how often I wanted to slap this cute little bottom when we first met?”

She turned her head to look up at him. “Very often?”

He smiled down at her. “Incredibly often.” He slid his hand into her panties and worked them down a few inches. His fingers lingered between her legs. She was wet, and he practically growled at her when he discovered this. “You’re making it hard for me to take my time, my dear.” His voice was low and husky. As he stroked her, she sighed.

He stood up quickly and yanked her panties off. He shed his own clothes with remarkable speed and climbed on top of her. Pushing her hair out of the way, he began kissing her back. His hard cock rested against her ass. He repositioned and began to penetrate. She opened her legs and welcomed him. After only a few inches, he slid back out and turned her onto her back. She spread her legs, but instead of moving between them he rested on his side next to her. He ran his hand down her body and began toying with her clit. He kissed her and teased her with one finger, sliding it in a little and then pulling back. He rested his hand on her stomach, and she pulled him closer and deepened the kiss.

He moved above her again and slid his cock into her. This time he filled her completely. She pulled away from the kiss and gasped. As she arched up to meet his thrust, she bit his lower lip and then kissed him again. He thrust hard and deep three times and then pulled out again. He took her by the waist and pushed her back, giving him room to kneel between her legs on the bed.

She cried out his name when he licked her. He explored her pussy as thoroughly as he had explored her mouth. He spread her, and his tongue found her most sensitive spots. Her hips bucked when his mouth fastened on her clit. His tongue circled it over and over again until she cried out with her release. She felt electric jolts of pleasure spread over every inch of her body. Her pussy clenched over and over until it was almost painful. His mouth didn’t let up, and that little edge of discomfort made her shiver, the sensation so different. His tongue slid into her as she trembled and moaned.

“You taste amazing,” he said as he moved up to cover her body with his.

She looked into his eyes and kissed him, licking his lips and then pulling back. “I do.”

He groaned deep in his throat. “My god, you’re sexy. You’d drive any man mad.”

“Take me, Erik. Please.”

He stroked her face and looked into her eyes for a long moment. He seemed on the verge of saying something, but he only kissed her mouth again and then moved away. He fumbled with the box of condoms, and when he got one out she took it from him. He remained very still, watching her as she stroked his cock several times before sliding the condom onto him. He kept his gaze locked with hers as he moved onto her again. Their eyes never wavered as he slid into her and began to move in long, deep strokes.

“You’re so beautiful. I always thought you had the most amazing, captivating eyes,” he said as he pushed her hair aside and caressed her forehead and her cheek. He lifted her ass up and spread her wider. She held her knees with her hands and arched to meet him. She gasped as his thrusts deepened and grew in intensity.

“Tell me if hurt you,” he whispered into her ear before kissing her neck repeatedly.

She rested her cheek against his head and moaned. “You won’t hurt me. It’s perfect.” She gasped as he thrust more quickly. “You’re making me yours.”

He looked into her eyes. “I truly hope I am.” He thrust faster and faster, and she clung to him as another orgasm built. The throbbing heat and unbearable tension in her core grew and grew until she exploded beneath him again. She put her hands on his lower back and dug her fingers into him to hold him in place as she came, her pussy milking his hard, thick cock. He kissed her, and she moaned against his lips over and over again. She had never come with such intensity before. It felt like the entire world had fallen away, and he was the only thing she could hold to.

He broke away from the kiss and pressed her down into the bed. His hips thrust again and again, making her gasp every time. Her pussy ached deliciously as he continued to take her. He had his heart in his eyes as he came, gazing down at her like she was the only woman in the world. She felt him release with a jerk. He said her name and fell onto her again. He kissed her so passionately she couldn’t breathe. She gasped for air as he pulled a few inches away and slid out of her. His eyes still said that he loved her, and that made it even harder for her to breathe. She stroked his face, wondering if he would say it. Instead he rolled off her and went into the bathroom. She heard the condom being flushed away and the sink running for a minute. When he returned to the bed he took her into his arms and began rubbing her back.

She snuggled against him and listened to his heartbeat. “I think you did that very properly.”

He kissed the top of her head. “Very easy with a woman like you.”

She looked up at him. Had she imagined what she saw? A man like Erik loving her seemed like a dream. Yet when he smiled down at her, she was ready to believe that any dream could come true. “If you say so.”

“Indeed I do say so. I’m going to have to give you more compliments so you’ll finally learn how to accept them graciously.”

“Will I be punished if I don’t?”

“If that’s what it takes.”

“I’m sure you can make me do anything you’d like.”

She thought she saw it in his eyes again, just a flicker of the emotion she’d seen as he came.

“I certainly hope so.”

She thought he was going to say more, but instead he pulled her close and held her gently, his fingers lightly stroking her back. She sighed in his arms, feeling a joy she’d thought she would never be able to feel again.

Erik woke up when he felt Susan’s warm lips on his chest. This time it wasn’t a dream. She really was in his bed and in his arms. He pushed her onto her back and kissed her, enjoying the playful way she squirmed beneath him. They’d made love three times the night before, but he still couldn’t get enough of her.

“Good morning,” she said. Her heavy lidded expression and mussed hair made her look adorable.

He smiled. “Good morning. I think I’ve waited a very long time for this moment.”

She searched his face as he looked down at her. Had he said something? What was she looking for?

“Did you sleep well?”

That hadn’t been what he’d expected her to say at all. He nodded. “I slept very well. You?”

She grinned and nodded. “I did too. It was nice to feel you close.”

She looked so beautiful. “I dreamt about you,” he said. He brought his lips to hers, and she responded immediately. His hands roamed down her body until he touched her thigh. She spread her legs for him, and he eagerly explored her wet folds.

“Mmmm.” He groaned. “Did you dream about me too?”

She nodded and pulled away from him. He wasn’t sure what she intended until she bent over him and took his cock into her mouth. He sighed as she engulfed him, thrusting upwards gently as he enjoyed every movement of her lips and tongue. She had him hard as a rock in no time, and watching her made him need her desperately. She had her eyes closed, and watching her mouth move up and down his shaft made him groan with desire.

“Susan, I need you.”

She grinned at him, and he noted a bit of mischief in her look. He tried to grab her and pull her beneath him, but she moved too quickly. She got a condom and slid it onto him. He ached to take her again. Instead of letting him position her, she climbed on top of him. She slowly slid down onto his cock, arching her back as she closed her eyes and took him inside her.

He thrust up to meet her hot, tight pussy. He was still amazed at how wet she got at his touch. He loved the way she responded to him. As she rode him, he had the perfect view of her entire body. He ran his hands over her long gorgeous legs and full luscious hips as he watched her breasts gently bounce and sway with her movements. He held still and let her move the way she wanted to. She started to grind herself down onto him, and he could feel her pussy tighten. She began to rub her breasts and moan. Her eyes fluttered open, and she began to twist her hips every time she came down onto him.

“I think you like my cock,” he said as he tightened his grip on her hips.

She nodded and giggled. “I can’t believe you fit.” He thrust up sharply, and she gasped. Then she moaned. “You’re so big.”

“You get so wet, I just slide right into your very welcoming pussy.”

She giggled again. She took his hands and brought them up to her breasts. “I’m about to come.”

He squeezed her breasts, and then he began to roll her nipples between his thumbs and forefingers. She sighed and her pussy clenched hard as he did this. “I can tell. I can’t describe how good you feel.” He moved one hand to her clit, rubbing it under his thumb. She jerked above him and came, crying out his name and riding him faster. She collapsed onto him, breathing hard and gasping with pleasure. Her pussy gripped him again and again as she rode out her orgasm, writhing over him. The sheer ecstasy on her face took his breath away. He rolled her gently onto her back and began to thrust. She moaned as he did so, reaching up to him and bringing his face to hers. They kissed sweetly and slowly as he thrust deep inside her. He came in a hot jolt and shuddered. He clenched his teeth to keep from saying he loved her. He was almost certain she could sense what he was thinking, could feel how he had changed as he took her for the first time the night before, but saying it would change everything. He lay on top of her, enjoying the feel of her hot, sated body beneath him.

“Do you know how precious you are to me?” he whispered.

She pulled away enough to look into his eyes. “Yes, I think I do.” She stroked his cheek and softly kissed him. “I can see it in your eyes.”

He gazed at her for a long moment before getting up to draw a bath for her. As the water filled the tub and he listened to her hum as she picked up her clothes, he tried to imagine being happier and found it completely impossible.

Chapter Five

Susan poured a little more green paint into the bucket, and David poured a few more drops of cream paint. He took the long ruler and stirred for a minute. Then he spread a little on the small chunk of plaster they had sitting on the floor and watched it dry. The streak of paint eventually dried to a very pleasant olive.

“I like this one.” She looked around the small bathroom. “This is enough to cover the whole room. Don’t you think?”

David looked down into the bucket. “Yeah. I think so.”

Susan set the two roller pans on the floor. “You think we’ll be hitting each other with our elbows if we both work in here? It’s a bit cramped.” She closed the door to make more room and turned on the overhead vent.

He shrugged. “I think we’ll be fine. We’ll get done faster this way.”

David didn’t seem to be in a bad mood, but he wasn’t joking with her the way he usually did. “So what did you guys do this weekend?” She’d come in pretty late Sunday evening, and he and Jeremiah had both been in bed when she got there. She’d poked her head into Jeremiah’s room and chatted for a minute, but David had remained silent when she’d gently tapped on his door.

“We watched a horror movie Saturday night. Jeremiah did the trim in here yesterday afternoon. I mostly worked on stuff for the website Sunday. I got a few new assignments and wanted to tackle them right off.”

“That’s great.”

He halfway smiled at her as he poured some paint into each roller pan. After checking the painter’s tape on the trim, he handed her a paintbrush. He began carefully painting a line just above the trim.

“David?”

“Yeah?”

“Look at me.”

He did, but somehow she didn’t really feel like he was completely with her. “What?”

“Do you like Erik?”

He was silent for a moment. “Why would you think I don’t?”

“Well, when he contacted me, you were all about it. You were the first to point out that you had always believed he liked me. When I told you how turned on I got after our first date you were fine. But then Saturday I wasn’t sure how you felt.”

He sighed. “Don’t worry about it. I just had a little overprotective moment.” He dipped his paintbrush again. He finished the line on that wall and began on the next wall. “I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be sorry.” She sat on the ground beside him and began on the opposite wall, painting a careful line over the trim to serve as a buffer for when they started using the rollers. She wiped away a dribble of paint before it could reach the edge of the tape. “I was just confused.”

“We all get confused some days.”

“Do you think I should have waited longer?”

“Mark would have wanted you to date.”

“I mean sleeping with him. You teased me at first about him seducing me, but then you seemed to think it wasn’t the greatest idea. It’s obvious I slept with him since I didn’t come home Saturday night, and that seems to be bothering you.”

He didn’t say anything for a few moments. “I just felt protective. That’s all. Like I said, guys talk. Even if any of his reputation was true, he’s older now. He wouldn’t toy with you.”

If David believed that, what was he worried about? “You hardly know him though.”

David turned to her sharply. “Has he done anything?”

His quick response told her that maybe he didn’t believe everything he was saying to her. Could he be worried about offending her? She didn’t want him to criticize Erik, but she wouldn’t react harshly if he did. They’d been friends long enough that he should know that about her, but he was acting like he didn’t. She would prefer an honest insult to this vague placation. “No. I just meant you hardly know him as, you know, a general statement. How could you know anything good or bad about him? You were friendly enough Thursday night.”

“I know.” He sighed. “I like him, Susan. I do. You’re a good judge of character. He cares for you.”

She nodded, and then they worked in silence for about ten minutes. Once the border was done, they looked at the parts that were close to being dry.

“It’s a nice color,” David said. He put the roller covers on the frames. “Here you go.”

She took the roller from him. The silence between them felt so awkward. “David, I’m asking all this because I think he’s in love with me. And your behavior made me think you’d have an opinion on that.”

He didn’t look at her. “Maybe we should talk about this later. I’m not sure what to say right now.”

He didn’t know what to say? How could he not have an immediate reaction to her statement? She didn’t push. “Okay. You’re right. Let’s get this done first. If we get distracted it’ll be sloppy.”

He nodded and began running his roller through the paint. After about five minutes, he said one thing. “He probably is in love with you. You should focus on figuring out how you feel about that.”

“Yeah. I should.”

As they painted, she thought about what he’d said on Thursday about second chances. He’d definitely been encouraging her. Then she thought about how serious he’d been Saturday afternoon when it was pretty obvious she might be spending the night with Erik. She hadn’t seen him at all on Friday. Could his thinking have really changed so much in twenty-four hours? She didn’t like to talk about her friends behind their backs, but she hoped she’d get a chance to talk to Jeremiah before she and David finished their discussion. He’d be there soon, so she and David wouldn’t be alone until that evening. She thought about what Erik had said Thursday night as well. Some people probably would’ve expected Susan and David to end up together. Was David feeling something beyond protectiveness or loneliness? She hoped she was wrong. She didn’t think she could take losing someone else she loved.

* * * *

Susan knocked on Jeremiah’s door. David was in his room working on an assignment. His door was open a crack, and she could see him sitting at his computer with a couple of books open in his lap.

“Come in.”

She opened Jeremiah’s door and quickly scooted inside. “Hey.”

“Hey.” He looked surprised. “Something wrong?”

She bit her lip. Would David be able to hear them if he came out into the hall or went to the bathroom? She didn’t want to risk it. “I wanted to talk to you about something. Can we go for a walk?”

He nodded and stood up. They went downstairs and out the front door. She didn’t know how to start as they meandered into the woods.

“Are you okay?”

“I’m fine.”

“Is Erik coming over?”

“Not tonight. We’re having dinner tomorrow.”

“Is it about him?”

She shook her head. “It’s David.”

Jeremiah raised his eyebrows. “What about him?”

“Just some things he’s said. And the way he’s acted a couple of times since I began seeing Erik.”

“You think he doesn’t like Erik?”

“Not exactly. It’s hard to explain. He was teasing me nonstop, just like you, but Saturday he acted very serious. Even a little uncomfortable.”

“About?”

“About me and Erik sleeping together.”

“How did he know that was going to happen? I didn’t know until I realized you hadn’t come home.” He shoved his hands in his pockets and added, “I guess what I mean is how did the subject come up?”

“Well, David came downstairs for a beer Thursday night right after Erik left. Erik only kissed me that night. There was absolutely nothing beyond a kiss, but it really turned me on. I was so amazed I had to tell someone.”

“So you told David, and he assumed you two were moving pretty fast?”

She nodded.

“What did he say?”

“He seemed fine that night, but he reacted more on Saturday. He didn’t say anything direct, though he wanted to make sure I knew he was just teasing about Erik’s reputation and plans to seduce me. But he also implied he knew we were going to have sex because we already knew each other so well. I asked him about it today, and he completely dismissed it. He said he just had an ‘overprotective moment.’ It’s not that I think he doesn’t like Erik.” She shrugged. “I can’t explain it, like I said.”

Jeremiah sighed. “I don’t think David has ever had a problem with Erik. I think his problem is how much you always liked Erik. I used to try to leave you and Erik alone because I could tell you liked him, but I think David wanted to stay around for that very reason. But then, some days, it was like he wanted to get away from you two so he didn’t have to watch you two together.”

Susan felt her heart beat quicken. Taking a deep breath, she said, “Please tell me you are joking.”

“I’m not joking. David’s always liked you. I always thought he was a little jealous that Erik had such an obvious effect on you.”

“Then why didn’t he ever ask me out?”

“How many girls did he ask out while we were in college?”

She opened her mouth to reply, but then she stopped. How many girls did he date?

“Come on. How many?”

“Bethany. Just Bethany.”

“And how did they meet?”

She thought for a minute. “His grandmother introduced them.” She stared at Jeremiah. “Holy shit!”

“And I don’t remember any talk of ex-girlfriends from high school.”

“But he’s handsome and funny and intelligent. What the fuck?”

“Think about it. He and Erik were working on the same level back then. Flirting and banter and teasing were their ways of showing affection. I don’t think David’s very good with expressing emotions. You’ve met his parents. They’re so distant.”

“You think David has feelings for me?”

“He has some. Your situations being so similar might have him focusing on them at the moment.”

“But he was so happy and excited when I got that text. Wasn’t he? Did I imagine that because I was happy and excited? He started teasing me right off.”

Jeremiah considered this. “Teasing is his natural reaction to everything. Maybe he thought you wouldn’t want to start dating anyone yet. I can’t tell you what his logic might’ve been. I’m not going to pretend to understand this. This is just my opinion. I think this has him confused. That’s the best understanding I have of the situation.”

We all get confused some days.
“That’s just what he said. He said we all get confused some days. I told him I thought Erik was in love with me, and then he wanted to drop the subject.”

“Whoa! You really think that? And you told David? No wonder you two were so quiet when I popped in.”

She nodded. “I think Erik is. He’s said several times he never stopped thinking about me. He only stopped contacting me because I was getting married.”

“Did David say anything about it at all?”

“He said I was probably right and that I needed to figure out how I feel about it.”

Jeremiah stopped and leaned against a tree. “Well, you’ve got some stuff to think about.”

“I know.” She sat down on a large boulder and looked back at the house. “You don’t think David’s feeling are, well, as strong as Erik’s.” She bit her lip. “Do you?”

“I’m not the one who can answer that. David likes you, and I’m sure he’s attracted to you. He’s lonely. Maybe Erik turning up made him wish he’d tried for something more with you.”

“Should I ask him? Let him bring it up? He clammed up earlier today, but he did say maybe we should talk about it later.”

“Then you shouldn’t let it just hang there between you. See if he comes to you. I can keep to myself for a day or two so you guys can find some privacy.”

“Okay. I promise I won’t let this affect the store.”

He laughed and shook his head. He sat beside her and put his arm around her. “I don’t care about that. I care about my friends and their feelings.”

“I know. We’ll get it sorted out.”

They stared down at the lake until Susan’s phone buzzed. She had a text from Erik saying he missed her.

“I didn’t tell you everything,” she said after looking at the text.

“What else is there?”

“Erik has brought David up a couple of times. He seems to feel the way you do. He said lots of people would have expected David and I to end up together after what we both went through.”

“It does make some sense. What did you say?”

“I told him David and I are friends and that’s all.”

“Is Erik jealous? Does it bother him you two live in the same house?”

“He’s been casual about it, but I think he is a little jealous.”

“Hmmm.”

“My thoughts exactly.” She stood up. “I have to talk to David and then whatever the result I need to tell Erik.” She looked back at the house, and she saw David’s light go out. “So either he just stopped working, or he’s going to bed.”

“It’s only nine. Maybe he’s heading downstairs to watch television or something.”

“Maybe. Erik’s gonna call before he goes to bed, so maybe I should go try to catch David.”

Jeremiah stood up and nodded. “I’ll head up to my room.”

They walked back in silence, and to Susan’s disappointment they found the living room empty. She let Jeremiah head up to his room, and when she heard his door close she went upstairs. She put her ear to David’s door and heard nothing. His room was completely dark.
