Oogles jumped onto my stomach, startling an “oomph!” out of me. He quickly moved to my chest and began kneading away, his front paws digging into my breasts.

“You like those?” I asked him playfully, squirming slightly under his prickly touches. I studied my two mounds for a moment, remembering how they felt the night before. I carefully removed Oogles and sat up, feeling them quiver ever so slightly beneath me. They seemed larger, heavier, and I quickly stood and hopped around the room. They bounced enthusiastically—more than should have been possible—and a long, incredulous whine slipped through my lips as I darted to my dresser. I pulled out a fresh bra, lifted up my nightie, and tried fastening it around me; after a minute of heaving and grunting, I managed to close the clasp. I then stared mystified in the mirror, the brassiere just barely held together.

I bit my lip and turned toward the bed just as the clasp broke, the bra launching off my chest like a sprung trap. It zipped right into Oogles, who emitted a shrill “meow,” jumped straight into the air, and then shot out of the room. My chest, for its part, rebounded nicely.

Dazed, I walked down the hall to my aunt’s bedroom. She was brushing her teeth as I stepped before her.

“Auntie, can I borrow one of your brassieres?”

Her mouth still full of paste, Aunt Mari gazed curiously at my naked body, obviously not comprehending my request. To help her, I grabbed my babies and held them up to her. “Mine don’t seem to fit anymore.”

Her mouth fell open, spilling a glop of toothpaste to the floor. “That’s how I felt, too,” I said with a queasy smile.

I sat huddled in my chair during Literature, peeking at my classmates during every few moments of lecture. My aunt’s bra felt comfortable enough, but there were other things to worry about…

Mr. Prop cleared his voice. “Alright class, Bradbury’s
The Illustrated Man
is full of fascinating stories. I want you to choose one as a group, read and discuss it, and then construct a brief presentation for the class. Bradbury’s pieces are loaded with deep themes, from the dangers of censorship to untimely regret. I want you to locate these ideas and explore them with the class next week.”

Marlene, Tamara, and I pushed our desks together so that we were facing each other. I then pulled up in my chair, but gave a little murmur as my chest propelled me back. I carefully scooted up again as if nothing happened.

My friends stared at me.

“Are you feeling OK?” Marlene asked. “You’ve been acting kind of jittery.”

“I’m fine,” I said dismissively. “So, what story do you want to choose? I think ‘The Man’ sounds intriguing. Or maybe ‘The Fox and the Forest’?”

Marlene eyed me curiously as Tamara’s pencil tumbled out of her hand. It rolled by my right foot.

“Could you grab that for me, Miyu?” Tamara asked casually.

I nodded and bent down, feeling the two chest weights tag along with me; I was definitely showing more cleavage than usual. I quickly handed her pencil back, smiling weakly. Tamara looked furious, Marlene baffled.

“Are you stuffing again?” Tamara hissed, her teeth clenched.

“No, of course not!” I insisted. I dropped my voice to a whisper as I tried to lean forward and explain. “They were like this when I woke up this morning.” I glanced at Marlene for support.

She looked uncertain. “You’re saying your chest grew a full cup size overnight?”

I nodded direly.

Marlene’s face turned white as she continued to stare at me. Or them. I couldn’t tell. I crossed my arms and pouted at her. Tamara snorted.

And the entire day proceeded in the same fashion.

At my locker, Thad appeared as though he might finally apologize; but the moment he beheld my new cushions, he immediately
clammed up and just smiled creepily at me. I spun on my heels and stalked off.

Gym was a nightmare. We played volleyball again, but I felt I had two volleyballs of my own as I traipsed around, feeling them juggle after me. Guys were smiling, and I soon retreated to the restroom. I remained hidden in a stall for the rest of the period.

At least until Tamara showed up.

“Are you in there?”

“Yes,” I said morosely, thinking she had come to cheer me up. I opened the door and looked at her expectantly.

“I’m going to settle this once and for all,” she declared, gripping my shirt and yanking me to my feet.

“Wha—” I replied. But before I could react further, Tamara had my breasts in her hands, squeezing them like fruit. Looking perplexed, she then dug her fingers down my neckline and into the left cup of my bra.

“Stop!” I exclaimed, trying to pull her arms away. “What are you doing?!”

I continued to squirm, and she finally released me, sending me falling gracelessly back onto the toilet seat. I questioned her with moistening eyes.

Tamara took a step back, looking equally shocked. “I’m… sorry,” she said finally. “I really thought you were faking. You know…I hate that.” Suddenly looking old and haggard, she walked listlessly away. I tried to catch my breath.

Lunch was no better. Tamara wasn’t there, but the others were strangely reserved.

“So, they really just inflated like that overnight?” Janet eventually asked, pointing a fork at them.

I sighed miserably.
The day was only half over.

And then, as I headed for History, I ran straight into Kimberly.

“Thad’s ignoring me,” she declared. “What did you tell him?”

I expected an ugly sharing of the minds, but her mood seemed to change as her gaze fell to my chest. As if in a trance, she just stared and stared.

“Were they always…like that?” she finally muttered, not sounding nearly as angry. It was as if she had spotted a beautiful butterfly.

“They’re still not as nice as yours,” I quipped, leaving her behind and proceeding to class.
Did I just say that?

At least Mary and Lizzie understood—sort of.

“It’s not unheard of that in some instances of accelerated adolescence, one can experience growth such as yours,” Mary explained, wiping her glasses and peering at them for the third time.

“Please stop doing that,” I groaned at her. “People are starting to look!” I glanced up, and sure enough, Kimberly was staring right at me. She turned away, her expression completely unreadable, but I felt my cheeks pinken.

“You should model for us. I’d love to paint you,” Lizzie said, peeking at me from above her book.

I glared at her, and she immediately resumed reading.

By Biology class, I felt like I had been dissected by the entire school. Being “gifted” was overrated—
and they still weren’t even that big.
I sat sulking in my seat as Clarence flipped through his textbook.
Perhaps my petite frame magnified them somehow?
Either way, Clarence hadn’t seemed to notice, and class was almost over. I studied him indignantly.

“Make any progress on your little investigation?” he asked nonchalantly as the bell rang.

“I might be onto something,” I replied simply, grabbing my bag. “See you tomorrow.”

I avoided Marlene and quickly headed outside to my aunt’s car. I clambered inside and smiled at her, but she seemed more uptight than usual.

“How did it…work out?” she asked as we headed for the community center.

I patted my chest with satisfaction. “The bra was fine. Thank you.” There was no point in reliving the day’s torrid details with her.

“We’ll have to get you some of your own soon, but you can continue using mine for now.”

I nodded as she stopped before the building. I hopped out.

“Have fun, sweetie!”

“We’ll see,” I said resignedly. I had my concerns.

And they proved warranted—nearly all my classmates were in their forties or higher. In fact, the youngest person beside myself appeared to be the well-endowed instructor herself. She wore a
pink leotard with a black cardigan over it, and seemed to take an especially keen interest in me as we began the lesson.

“Miss Miyu, compressions should be done like this,” she explained, kneeling next to me and pressing her palms down just below the dummy’s chest. “And you should breathe into the mouth like this.” She held the dummy’s head back, pinched its nose, and then gingerly cupped her mouth over the accompanying facemask. Her breasts surged forward as she bent over, obscuring nearly everything she was doing. Two breaths later, she sat up and smiled expectantly at me. “You see? Not so hard. Now you try again.”

“OK,” I said reluctantly. I replaced her mask with my own and went to work, finally hearing her approval after the fifth or sixth breath. “Nice job,” she said, rubbing my back. “Now get going on those compressions.”

As she left to observe someone else, an elderly man came over.

“Isn’t she great?” he said, gazing down at me. “I take her class every couple months.”

I tried to smile, but I just couldn’t.

By seven o’clock class was over, and I finally had my certification. I headed for the door.

“You did marvelously today,” the instructor said, hopping in front of me. “I also teach an aerobics class, in case you’re interested. It’s great fun, and it’ll make that sweet body of yours even more delectable. She bent forward, and with a wink, handed me a perfumed business card.

I placed it in my purse and bowed graciously. “Ha, thanks, I’ll think about it.” I began inching for the door. “Have a nice night.” I pushed through the exit and found Aunt Mari waiting outside.

We were home within minutes. As Aunt Mari set the dinner table, I quickly changed into my pajamas and checked my e-mail. Rraman had not responded, and a quick perusal of the forum showed no sign of further contact, either.

I sighed and slowly plodded back downstairs.

Chapter Thirteen

B
y Friday, the gawks and stares had finally subsided, and life returned to normal. More importantly, the new bras my aunt had me fitted for were extremely comfortable, and I began each day with newfound confidence.

But not everything was perfect.

“Can’t you do
something
about her?” Marlene pleaded as we left lunch one day. “She really feels awful, and it would make things easier on the rest of us.”

I didn’t reply immediately. “You know…what she did, right?” I asked, staring at her warily.

Marlene despaired. “Miyu, I know that. She told me everything. In tears. She feels horrible. Believe it or not, she really likes you.”

We stopped to stare at each other. “She actually cried?” I asked, dumbfounded. A warm tingle shook my body, and I had to
force myself not to smile. “So…why doesn’t she just come to me on her own?”

“You know how she is,” Marlene said, looking down the hallway somewhat uncomfortably. She peered back at me. “Look, Miyu, you’re so naive. You don’t seem to realize there’s something about Tamara you should—”

The warning bell sounded; we only had two minutes before next period.

Marlene rolled her eyes, exasperated. “Look, I have to run. But please, please consider what I said. I know you shouldn’t have to, but it would mean a lot to her.” Marlene looked at me helplessly, pivoted on her heals, and hurried away.

I stood there, not really understanding everything she had tried to say—but perhaps she was right.

The day soon funneled me into Art. My new painting was almost complete, with just a few light dabs of my brush to go. Mrs. Scribbs walked over as I worked, watching me apply the last little details. I immediately tensed under her gaze, but she smiled good-naturedly.

“That’s quite a remarkable improvement over your first work,” she said approvingly. “And all from memory, I presume.”

I nodded as I made a light dab with my brush.

“Do you mind if I ask who he is?”

I smiled inwardly as I studied the portrait. “Just a boy I’ve seen before.”

Mrs. Scribbs eyed me curiously. “Well whoever he is, he must have made quite the impression.”

“You could say that,” I said as I added just one more stroke to his left eyebrow, and then another dash of red to his hair. I looked at her. “I think I’m done.”

“Indeed,” she agreed, observing the canvas with approval. “A very interesting piece, all the way around. He’s inelegant and awkward, but his eyes betray a quiet intelligence and sensitivity—always wandering, always searching.”
