“Finding dead bodies,” Wayne answered morosely, but I thought there was a twinkle somewhere beneath his lowered eyebrows.

I imagined a wedding procession through an obstacle course of corpses. Stabbed, garroted, shot. I shook my head and looked at Wayne, healthy and nearly smiling despite his tone.

“And living to tell about it?” I suggested gently.

Wayne’s eyebrows shot up as he laughed, his head flung back against the couch in his good humor.

When he was all laughed out, he put his arms around me and repeated just as gently, “And living to tell about it.”

Maybe we’d have that wedding after all.
