Bub(s)
– an affectionate term for a baby

Bush telegraph
– local gossip, the grapevine

Bust up
– an argument or fight

Car park
– parking lot

Cheers
– general greeting, often used for thanking someone or saying goodbye or to sign notes

– a chat, a conversation

- chicken

Crikey
– an exclamation of surprise or bewilderment

– an exclamation of surprise or dismay

– very

– the ubiquitous Australian greeting

– a version of “good on you”, praising someone for their efforts, similar to “kudos”

– to chat someone up for romantic reasons, similar to “hit on”

– a frozen treat on a stick, known as a “popsicle” in the U.S.

Lingo
– language

Looker
– someone or something good-looking, often used to describe women

Mate
– friend, sometimes equivalent to “buddy”

Me
– sometimes used instead of “my” (e.g. “I’ve lost me socks”)

Mugs
– me (used in a self-deprecating way), can also mean “face”

No dramas
– no prolems, no big deal, don’t worry about it

No worries
– no problems, don’t worry about it, that’s all right

Pash
– a passionate kiss or to kiss someone passionately

Pull the other one
– expressing scepticism when you don’t believe what someone is saying

Rep
– reputation (also sometimes used for “representative”)

Root
– to have sexual intercourse

– everything will be fine, everything will be all right (a variation of “she’ll be apples”)

– a mechanic

- very angry

Spunk
– an attractive person of either sex

Strine
– Australian slang, based on the way Australians pronounce “Australian” = “Aus-strine”

Sunnies
– sunglasses

Ta
– thank you

Take a chill pill
– relax, calm down, take things easy

“Tall poppy”
– highly successful people who rise above the rest and may develop an overblown ego. They are often seen as needing to be “cut down” in Australia, where the culture favours the “underdog”

Tinnie
– a tin of beer

True-blue
– genuine, authentic

Useful as tits on a bull
– completely useless

Ute
– short for “utility vehicle”, similar to pick-up truck, although modern “utes” tend to be more like sports models and can be very luxurious.

Yank
– affectionate term for an American (not meant to be offensive)

Oz
– Australia

Hanna was born in Taiwan and has been a globe-trotter most of her life, from growing up in the United Arab Emirates to attending school in New Jersey, from working in the glamorous world of London advertising to emigrating Down Under. Along the way, she somehow managed to pick up a wonderful husband, a huge, slobbery dog, two rescue cats, an assortment of cardboard boxes and a slightly dodgy "trans-atlantic" accent.

After graduating from Oxford University, she tried her hand at a variety of jobs before returning to her first love: writing. She is the author of an award-winning children's mystery series and also writes romances, mysteries and romantic thrillers for adults.
