Epilogue

I did my hair carefully and debated on putting make-up on. I normally didn’t do things like this, but it might be a special occasion. It had been six months since the most traumatic case of the year and he was coming to pick me up. We had been dating since Alfi had been taken into custody, and I was still getting used to it all. It still felt like a whirlwind of emotions, but the negative ones had pretty much faded.

I thought about Hope and smiled as I carefully applied the mocha colored lipstick. She would just be getting home from her martial arts class, to this day I don’t remember which one she’s studying, but she hasn’t let go of the strength she gained from slamming her forehead into a villain’s genitalia. It seemed silly when I thought about it like that, and it always made me laugh. I shook my head and forced myself to get back to work on my face. He was coming to pick me up and apparently he was taking me someplace really nice and I had to dress appropriately.

The knock on the door came exactly on time and I had just finished messing with my mascara. I rushed to the door and let him in. Grey met me with a wide smile, looking at me before he reminded me that I had forgotten my shoes.

My stocking feet were very much in my awareness however and I rushed off to the bedroom to slip the beige pumps on my feet. Turning I couldn’t help but feel surprised that he hadn’t followed me into the bedroom, but I ignored the strange feeling that this was giving me as I walked back out of the bedroom. He was smiling broadly as he looked at me and asked if I was ready. I followed him out of my apartment and climbed into his SUV.

“Kevin’s gotten a promotion. They moved him up to Quantico.” Grey broke the news carefully, not really knowing how I was going to react to it.

“That’s great.” I answered, honestly happy for the man who had worked so hard. “What’s he going to be doing up there?”

“Training.” Grey didn’t add the fact that he was going to be training the next wave of supernatural agents that were coming into the bureau.

“He’ll do pretty well for himself with that.” I still thought about the man’s insecurities and wondered if he was going to be able to overcome them. I looked at Grey, a man who had changed my life and knew that he had already thought the same thing, but we didn’t say anything about it. There was nothing that really needed to be said. We both honestly wished the man the best of luck with his new endeavor and it wasn’t until we reached the fancy restaurant that we were ready to speak once again. “This place is expensive.” I was frowning, debating on whether a dinner that would cost his entire paycheck was worth it.

“I know.” Grey seemed happy however. “I always wanted to try this place.”

“Why?”

“It’s probably just the fact that it’s famous.” Grey admitted. “I think it’s a good idea to have a dinner like this at least once in a lifetime. He grinned at me and held out his arm. I accepted, hoping that I could find something fairly inexpensive on the menu, something that wouldn’t put him in the poorhouse. We walked through the door and were greeted warmly, even though it was obvious that we weren’t dressed in the same designer wear that everyone else in the building seemed to be wearing. I couldn’t help but notice how out of place we looked walking into a place like this and wondered why he would bring me here.  He wasn’t normally the type to make these kinds of decisions, he knew me well enough to know that I wasn’t going to be impressed by a fancy dinner. A movie, a pizza, and a nice conversation at home in my pajamas was a lot more enjoyable than dressing up to sit at a restaurant with a bunch of snobs. “Is there something wrong?”

“This isn’t usually my thing.” I admitted, but I gave it a try. Honestly, it was the best meal I had ever eaten in my life, but it was the end that made me tear up. Grey dropped down to his knee in front of me.

“I know you’re not the type of woman to just fall into love, but I’ve known that I loved you since the day I met you.” He paused and I was certain that he was going to pull a ring out of his pocket. I felt my pulse quicken. I honestly didn’t know what my answer was going to be. “It’s too early for a proposal, I know, but I wanted to tell you how much I love you. I wanted you to know that I would do anything for you and I plan to make this permanent. Take as much time as you need to figure it out and I will be there, right beside you, helping you with anything you need help with.”

I nearly fainted. No man had ever said those kinds of things to me. He wasn’t proposing marriage, he had brought me here so that he could make a pledge to me. “I don’t know what to say.”

“You don’t have to know what to say. I know that you’ve always been independent. I brought you here to tell you that I love that about you and I don’t expect you to change. I’m not going to ask you to marry me, but I want you to let me into your heart. To count on me when times get tough.”

I almost laughed, but managed to stop myself before I ruined this romantic moment. What he had said to me meant more than any proposal. The promise to be there for me, for whatever I needed was so unusual, so perfect, that I don’t think anyone could have responded to it well. He rose from his knee, settling back in his seat, smiling at the bewildered look on my face. “I appreciate that.” It sounded dull and flat compared to the beautiful words that
he had just said.

He laughed. “I wanted to ask you to marry me, but I knew that it would make you uncomfortable.”

“Is this some sort of trick?”

“No, it’s a promise.” His voice was serious. “I’ll be there for you, whatever you need me for and give you any space that you need. I don’t want to tame you. You deserve to be wild and free, independent and strong.”

“How long have you been rehearsing this?”

“A while, Hope might have helped me with the script.” His honesty had always made me comfortable. He wasn’t a man who was prone to lies or deception, but he could call upon the skills when needed. It felt perfect as we headed back to my place and he kissed me, drawing me into  what felt like it was going to last until the end of time. He took me to the room and we made love, riding on the waves of passion until the morning light shone through the window. I told him how much I loved him and while I know that my words weren’t as pretty as his were, they were just as meaningful.
