“How
dare
you, you treacherous bastard!”

My brother Dominic just sat there, unable to defend himself in the face of my extreme rage. I stared at my twin, remembering how much I had admired him and looked up to him in the past. How
honorable
and
courageous
he was, and how proud I was to have him for my brother. Obviously he didn’t die in a roadside car bomb incident, since he was sitting there right in front of me. My anger ratcheted up another notch when I remember how long I had mourned Dominic. His supposed death had been a devastating blow to me.

Now it made sense why I had only met Wyatt and Angelo from Sergeant Quartermaine’s unit. “Dee” was Dominic, and obviously he had been hiding from me. I felt disgust over his cowardice, and couldn’t believe I had ever thought of him as respectful and courageous. I felt another sob emerge as my gaze returned to his, and I stared into his eyes…eyes that looked just like mine.

Unable to stand being in his presence for one second longer, I pointed to the door and demanded, “Get the hell out of here! Go! I can’t even stand to look at you. If I catch you in this room again, you’re going to regret it. Stay away from me!” In the back of my mind, I knew that logically he must’ve had a good reason for being here as a program participant, but in that moment I didn’t care to hear any of his excuses.

Dominic blanched, trying to blink away the moisture that suddenly flooded his eyes at the depth of my anger. We had always been so close and I had never spoken to him this way before. His cheeks flushed a dull red in shame as he climbed wearily to his feet.

Before he reached the doorway, I spat out a clear warning. “When I get out of this room and I’m fully healed, I’m coming after you. Maybe then you’ll wish you really were dead.”

With a defeated look on his face, he nodded his head in acceptance and replied, “I understand. I’ll be waiting.”

With the threat of my revenge hanging heavily in the air, Dominic’s head hung low as he slowly exited my room. I continued to sob brokenly as he walked down the hallway towards the exit, each one of his heavy footsteps echoing ominously as if he held the weight of the world on his shoulders.
