Someone whistled. “Get a room!” Rena and Gage turned to see James grinning at them. He sat with several of Rena’s old Recruits, books spread out, laptops, too, doing homework for their community college classes. They were doing all right in the Dead World, too. So far, so good.

Rena took another look at Gage’s face. She wasn’t tired of it yet. That had to be a good sign, right?

Through the hell of what had happened, she’d learned that life was unpredictable and risky and full of trouble, but with people you loved, you could find your strength and your path. You could find your home.

What she’d loved most about the Life were Lifers. And here they all were still.

Smiling at the hum around her, Rena Novo stepped into her future.

Acknowledgments

I’m indebted to the videogame experts and book authors and numerous crime-writing classes on toxins, forensics, police procedure, morgue and mortuary procedures I drew on to write this book, but I want to especially acknowledge Chris Sean, Seattle PD, for specifics related to law enforcement procedures there, to Lee Lofland and his WRITERS POLICE ACADEMY, an amazing hands-on training experience, and to the generosity of the experts who post on CrimeSceneWriters, an online group hosted by Wally Lind, where no question is too ridiculous to answer.
