uses different tints of the three secondary colors, orange, violet and green. When you are looking for a color combination that you know works, remember to check out your color wheel. The two colors directly opposite each other (complementary colors) are always the strongest combination available. In the case of

, the three colors are equally opposite from each other on the wheel.
Complementary Colors
Here we’re going to look at complementary colors. Complementary colors sit either opposite or at equal distances from each other on the color wheel. These colors always work well together, but don’t be afraid to experiment with them. Use different shades of the colors with each other. This widens your palette and gives you some room to play. And while complementary colors often work best when used as shown, there are no strict rules. Make your art your own. Be brave!
Mooka Complements
, I used the secondary colors that complement each other, but with a twist. Instead of a clear orange tint, I chose one with a more yellow tint. I didn’t do so intentionally; I just liked the yellow-orange color in my palette and went with it. It worked. The other advantage was that the yellow element of the tint sits equally away from red on the color wheel—and pink is a whitened tint of red. So introducing pink into the work brought a different dimension to the piece, and it came together beautifully. I’ve followed a similar path in

Analogous schemes are colors that sit next to each other on the color wheel. Usually three colors are chosen—for example, blue, violet and red (primaries and the secondary between them), yellow, yellow-green and green (the primary, tertiary and secondary that sit next to each other). However, you can expand this as much or as little as you like.
was a lot of fun to create. Although it uses a cooler color palette, there is something outdoorsy and water-like about how this finished up—like a garden by the sea.

The third color combination theory I want to share is monochromatic color. This theory uses a single color in various tints and shades. Monochromatic color schemes lend themselves well to Zentangle, as you’re about to see.
