“Lose the nose. Check.”
“Oh hell,” Tess said. “Come here.”
She leaned forward, maneuvered around the pointy nose and kissed him, hard. His tambourine jingled and coins spilled and pinged on the pavement. She looked up to see people watching, Nick, too. Let them stare, and if someone else was watching, let them stare, too.
Tess helped Niels clean up the spilled money, then he rejoined the group, who still sang and played, and now danced. He tapped his tambourine against his open palm and gave her a wink.
A warm feeling shivered across Tess’s skin as she returned a smile.
For just a moment, it was as though she floated above herself, looking down as she clapped her hands to the music and made her way to Nick’s side. She felt all of it—the music, Nick, her feelings for Niels, the people in the park, the Christmas trees, civilization itself that looked down on Central Park in the form of skyscrapers and apartment blocks—and thought
yes, this is real. This is worth fighting for.
And then the moment was gone and she was just a woman in a park with her son, listening to music. A modern woman of the first decade of the 21
st
Century, no different from anyone else.
