Above all, I want to extend my deepest love, thanks, and appreciation to my husband, Steve, and to Molly and Noah. Molly left home to launch her great adventures at college as I started this book; I am thrilled to see her flourishing with the wind at her back, both on and off the water. Noah provided glorious smiles and hugs; worked alongside me; wrote and illustrated several books of his own, including
A Tiger's Tale;
and made me enormously happy and proud as he, too, began a love affair with biography. (Thank you, children's literature!) From the start, Steve supported this project wholeheartedly. A fellow journalist, he lobbed questions, extracted meaning out of complexity, and provided many welcome laughs. When I needed time to work, he and Noah played, watched, and strategized baseball. Most important, Steve's unwavering encouragement made me believe that I could not only write this book but finish it. I am immensely grateful.
