“Do you have any idea who I am Lilith?” Declan groaned. “Jesus Christ...woman, you’re asking me to give up my career, my life, everything I have here. What makes you even think I would? That’s what’s wrong with you Lilith! You are so selfish, even before, even now you only think about yourself. As if your life has so much more meaning than mine or anyone else’s. You deserve to serve time for aiding and abetting Donavan Goode.”

Instantly regretting what he said Declan sighed. Frustration couldn’t compare to what he felt now. Torn because of his love for her, but when did Lilith ever really commit to him. Besides the ridiculous amount of passion they shared, Lilith never told him she needed him. She always had a way of making him feel like she could do everything by herself. Though honestly that’s what he adored about her, it still would have sated him to feel needed by her. “I don’t even know exactly how you were involved but I have a feeling with your cunning, you were more than fifty percent vested, if not the brains of the operation.”

Lilith saw the agony in his face and the betrayal in his voice. His pain was evident. She remained steadfast and nonchalant. “Do you think I’m going to look good in prison orange? Besides...what will happen if they find out you and I have been together since the arrest of my ex-boyfriend? You think you’ll look good in prison orange too?” Lilith cracked.

He rolled his eyes. “Wise ass...”

All she could think of was getting out of the house. Falling in love was never part of the plan. “Declan...I’m not going to jail, but I love you and I don’t want to leave you. If I have to choose...between you and going to jail-all I can say is I’m not going to jail.”

She picked up her bags one more time and turned to walk out the door. Before she could get both feet out she heard his gun cock. She cringed. Looking out her peripheral the mirror on the wall showed Declan’s 9mm trained on her back.

“Don’t move Lilith Tate.” Declan couldn’t let her get away, regardless of what he felt or didn’t feel. It was true that he had fallen in love with her. It was also true that he would do just about anything for her. But could he leave his life behind? All his life since he could remember watching cop dramas while his mom was at work? The idea of being the alpha male in charge of a team of like minded men cleaning up the streets from inconsiderate leeches of the people?

She could keep moving but she was almost as sure as could be that Declan would shoot her. If she stayed she would likely serve time in prison. If she ran Declan would be all she ever thought about. Lilith felt a pang of regret sit in her gut, knowing if she ran all she would do was to come back for him. If she stayed she would be arrested, charged, and arraigned. They’d find her guilty. She would never mention her involvement with Declan. She’d spare him that. Getting involved with him was the worst idea but she couldn’t stay away from him. She needed him.

“Okay.” She dropped her bags and turned around. “Fine.” Tears streamed down her face,  annoying her to no end. Emotion was a bitch if ever there was one.

Confused he took his finger off the trigger. “What?” The tears were a nice touch. Unseen before but she was a class act.

Lilith wiped her face and her eyes met his. Sadly she spoke. “I’m sorry...for hurting you. I never meant to. I wasn’t even going to see you after the first time we were together. Never thought I’d like a lawman. But I do. I love you. Hurting you by hurting your career is the last thing I want to do. If I leave and you don’t come with me, I’ll only think of you.” Declan lowered his gun and stepped closer to her.

“If I stay...I’ll keep quiet and face the consequences. All I’ve ever done is look out for myself, and I’m not sorry for that Declan, I’m not. I don’t regret it. I only regret being selfish with you. So do what you need to Declan Weber. But I need you and I rather stay here and face that than run and lose you forever-” She paused watching him as he intently eyed her. “Which may happen anyway,” Lilith mumbled.

“I didn’t say anything. No one knows. If you need to go. Just go.” He holstered his gun and sat on the floor. “I can’t go anywhere. I won’t leave.”

Lilith’s instinct was to run and just as she was about to she realized in the midst of her own selfishness Declan saved her when he could have simply turned her in. She dropped her bags and sat down in front of him on the floor. His gorgeous blue eyes met hers.

For the first time Declan saw vulnerability in her eyes. “What now?”

“I’m here,” Lilith answered quietly.

“For how long?” Declan sighed. Surely she would be gone soon enough even if not right now.

She held his hand and kissed him passionately. “I’m not running Declan.”
