"I'm a
firefighter
," Adam tells him, holding up his hands defensively.

"... Oh."

There are so many things the alpha could say now as the silence thickens between them and fills the empty space. He could demand a paternity test, of course, or he could volunteer to get checked for sperm. Moreover, he could do both. But omega werewolves aren't like humans—they only conceive during a heat. And while heats usually last their full duration despite impregnation, they don't always. An omega's hormones are a fickle and unpredictable thing.

Adam remembers their encounter, too. He remembers entering the room to the sight of a carefully built nest, remembers the way his senses were blown by the scent of a heat too unimaginably wonderful to be believed, remembers the way his partner propped himself up to show off the glossy cherry of his ass, thighs coated liberally with slick…

And now this omega is here and the body is right even if the scent is different, toned down from its heightened state and rosy like fragrant, dewy fruit. He
smells
pregnant, that much Adam can tell.

And Adam remembers leaving him, back then. He remembers waking to the stale scent of a passing heat, waiting for some time to see if the omega would wake up, and then leaving. In retrospect, he should have known who he was right away from having watched him sleep, but…

His eyes are dazzling bright gems. The omega looks like a whole different person facing Adam like this, his eyes open.

"Do you… want to sit down? So we can talk about all of this?" Adam suggests, because that's really all he can come up with at the moment.

There's like a ninety percent chance here that he's a dad, or going to be one, and if this omega's not pulling his leg—if this isn't a trick—then that means he's definitely
not
as infertile as he thought. Which, quite frankly, changes a
fuck load
of things.

For a moment, Adam thinks the omega is going to refuse him, he can see the way the smaller male pushes out his chest, reminding Adam of a bird puffing up its feathers to appear larger, but, after a brief pause of crackly tension, he concedes and sits on the sofa. In Adam's spot. Well, the alpha sure as hell isn't going to mention that—this omega is wound tight enough already.

Though it might not be entirely his fault. He
is
accidentally pregnant with Adam's child. And after intentionally seeking out an alpha that wouldn't have the ability to do that, anyone would be pretty annoyed.

Even if this guy already seems like more of a handful than most.

Adam sits beside the omega. The mother of his child. He allows that to sit in his mind, mulling it over until the words don't make any sense, and he feels strangely disconnected from this but, at the same time, he's
panicking,
even if internally—he doesn't want to freak out in front of the omega, he's supposed to be an alpha after all—but if this is true then…

What? He's going to be a parent. He'll have a son or a daughter with a
complete stranger.

This is not how he'd envisioned his week. This isn't how he envisioned his
life.

Adam can't take care of a cat, nevermind a miniature werewolf, and the pinch of pain that accompanies the news reminds Adam that this seems almost unfair. It had taken him a long, grueling amount of time to lick his wounds and adjust to his life as an infertile alpha, after having always wanted kids, and now that he's finally settled into his childless existence,
this
happens.

The omega speaks up and, while he's not
friendly,
he doesn't seem quite as hostile and venomous now.

"I get the impression you genuinely thought you were… infertile," the omega comments, not looking at Adam.

"Of course, yeah, you really think I'd purposefully try to—" The striking color of the omega's eyes flash towards him, intense with the message they're trying to convey. "Oh, you did."

He
had
thought Adam had done this to him for the hell of it, which explains the omega's startling wrath, but Adam doesn't have the capacity to be cruel—though he knows other alphas don't share that same trait. He'd applied for the OHC to help omegas in need, and, sure, it's by no means
difficult
for him to fulfill his task of satisfying desperate, heat-soaked omegas, but his motives were to offer his services to those that needed them.

"I said I'm a firefighter, right?" The omega nods. "See, a few years ago, there was this really bad fire in someone's home. We'd saved the wife and her baby but there was a kid trapped inside, must have been about five years old, and the humans would never have been able to reach him in time. But I could. It was pretty reckless, but I couldn't just leave him."

Adam breathes out a controlled breath, recalling this memory with enough clarity that he can feel the licks of scorching hot flames at his face, the smoke gritty and hanging poisonously in the air.

"I saved him," the alpha admits with a hint of a grin, proud. "But I tripped over a fallen beam on the way out. It was a pretty nasty fall; I broke my leg and my nose." Adam points at the faint bump on his nose where the break hadn't fully healed. "I also had… trauma… to my— you know. Anyway, they said it'd probably be impossible for me to have children."

CHAPTER 4

Noah stares down at the pages spread out in front of him and rubs his temples, a headache having plagued him for the better part of an hour now.

He's supposed to be translating but he can barely concentrate—not after all that's happened. It's been three days since he saw Adam, the alpha having alleviated a lot of the fears Noah had about his motivations, but at the same time the omega had been dealt an onslaught of new questions and concerns too. They discussed it at a length and Adam vowed to get a fertility test as soon as he was able, as well as look into whether or not he might have impregnated anyone else, and then the alpha promised him he'd take responsibility, be involved, and insisted he go to any kind of medical appointments.

Humorously, it's the idea that there might be
other
pregnant omegas out there, children sired by this selfsame alpha, that bothers Noah the most. Those omegas would be, of course, dainty and cute things, likely with good family ties and a strong pack with which to strengthen bonds with, unlike Noah. They would have lovely personalities and be ideal maternal figures, unlike Noah. He knows he's undesirable to begin with, so having to sit off to the sidelines while the father of his child prances into a family with someone else…

It's selfish of him, he knows.

Adam is handsome, that much Noah came to terms with quickly. He's strong, selfless, and built exactly how one would suspect a firefighter, or an alpha werewolf, would look.

Noah was not ignorant to the fact that the other male was wearing no more than a tank top for the duration of their interactions, the ludicrousness that is swollen alpha muscles on full display as they spoke. He imagines that's why his anger subsided as quickly as it did, the omega unable to hold onto resentment as soon as he had cleared Adam of malignant intent.

He would be an omega's idea of a perfect mate, Noah is fairly sure. And omegas are horribly
fertile
during their heat. If the alpha was new to the OHC program or, instead, was just on some kind of high sperm count streak…

Well, he may be the father to several children now. And how could Noah compete against those other mothers for prime partner material? Simply put, he
can't
.

And that gnaws at him even more ferociously than the fact that inside him grows a child.

He may very well end up having to raise it on his own, alone, facing human confusion and scorn when they try to puzzle out from where he obtained the baby. Human
males
don't birth their young, so he might have to formulate an elaborate scheme of lies…

It's a headache, which is why he has one.

His cell phone rings.

Noah doesn't recognize the number but he immediately thinks it could be Adam from some other line and answers the call, nervous and anxious as he says, "Hello?"

The person on the other end, distinctly female, exhales with relief. "Noah! It
is
you!"

The omega freezes.

It's his beta sister. Somehow. She's gotten ahold of his number, she's found him, and panic grips the omega swift and tight as he feels himself stop breathing. His escape has been jeopardized. If they find him, it's over.
If they find him, it's over
.

"Please just listen to me, Noah. Please," the girl pleads. "Mom and dad are so worried about you—they've been so upset ever since you left. Please, just talk to me for a little while, okay? Nothing has to happen, but… I'm outside. I'm at your door. Just please let me in and we can—,"

Noah hangs up and shoves his phone away from him as though it's burned him. He glances in the direction of the doorway to his apartment, the living room blocked by the wall to his office. He believes her. She wouldn't be here unless she was
sure
.

The omega strips quick and fast, only stopping midway to yank open his office window. The room has a pitiful view of an alleyway, but now he's thankful.

He's right by the fire escape.

Changing into his wolf form takes less time than it normally does as Noah, panicking, rushes the transformation, his human side discarded in mere seconds before he throws himself out and scrambles down iron ladders, longer nails catching on the holes in the metal. Once at the final, vertical ladder he jumps down with ease and takes off like a shot, away from the view of the road where a black car and a chauffeur surely wait for his sibling.

At first he doesn't know where he's going, but, as he travels side streets and bounds over backyard fences, avoiding as many humans as he can, he realizes quickly enough that he's going to Adam's. He just
prays
that the alpha's home.

CHAPTER 5

It's been a long day and by long Adam means an over twelve-hour shift. He hasn't missed medical work, that's for sure. It isn't
bad,
per se, and Adam does shamelessly enjoy helping people—it's selfish of him, but it puts his mind at ease knowing he's spending his time assisting others with what skills he has. It's
rewarding,
and when Adam returns home from work, he feels weightless, fatigued and worn to the bone, but without worry all the same.

At least, that's how he used to feel, but with his unborn child cradled in an omega's belly, growing steadily larger with each passing day, Adam's mind has been more consumed with concerns recently.

He's not sure if he has fully accepted the reality of it all yet. He won't leave Noah to fend for himself, of course not, he
wants
to be as involved as the omega will allow. Adam's wanted children ever since he was a child himself, and he may not ever have the 'full' father experience since Noah will have complete custody, and they're not mates, in love and living together, but Adam isn't about to be picky with the only opportunity he has to be a dad. The alpha will, and is, embracing it with his arms wide open.

Noah has expressed wanting Adam to be present in their child's life, as much as he prefers, and, to some extent, Adam suspects the omega
needs
Adam's support, since the alpha has guessed that he might not be on a salary that allows for another mouth to be fed. Not that Adam is much better off on a firefighter's wage, but two incomes are better than one and Adam has explicitly offered his financial help.

After arranging a fertility test and being handed similar results to when he'd first sustained the trauma, and upon contacting the OHC to remove his name from their database, and enquire as to any other accidental pregnancies that might have been his fault and the answer being a distinct
no,
Adam's convinced that it's not a case of his fertility—it's Noah's.

Adam has a miniscule chance of impregnating an omega, so slight it might as well not exist. For Noah to conceive, the omega must be
damn
fertile.

Noah recalls the potency of the luscious, heady scent of Noah's heat, and it had driven Adam to the brink of oblivion and back. The omega had been divine—the best sex Adam's had, and the omega had essentially milked Adam dry of every functioning sperm he had expelled and his body had
determinedly
inseminated itself on what insubstantial offering Adam had left.

The omega doesn't know this. Not yet. Adam isn't seeing him for a little while, and they had exchanged phone numbers so he's expecting a call from the omega to inform him of when his scans will be due and if Adam can attend.

It soothes one concern of his, however, that being that he hasn't fathered any more impossible babies that are hiding amongst the werewolves of the country. No, it's just Noah and his exceptionally stubborn womb.

Try as he might, though, Adam can't find it in himself to be apologetic. In fact, despite the unideal circumstances, Adam thinks he should send Noah's uterus a letter of gratitude—since it's made possible what Adam had thought impossible and had long since given up hope on.

He isn't sure how Noah genuinely feels about the baby. The omega had, before any discussion had been had, firmly explained that he would not be aborting it, which leads Adam to believe that Noah is more attached that he lets on, but he can't be sure. What the omega is thinking and feeling is still a mystery to him.

With his mind enveloped by thoughts of babies and child care and possible names—yes, he's already started considering those—he's delayed in noticing the scent that permeates the air by the dumpster… and it's not the dumpster.

Adam had only been taking the trash out but there's a sourness in the air, it frays at the fringes of his nerves, sets him on edge and he feels as though he's neglecting to protect something, or someone.

He finds the someone, tucked tight and small in the narrow gap between the dumpsters, and in wolf form.

Adam doesn't know why but Noah's
terrified,
and as he bends down to see the omega and ensure he isn't injured or worse, Noah's eyes come to focus on him, huge and reflective and
vulnerable.

"Hey," Adam voices softly, tone dropping low and gentle in a way that feels made for exactly this—for soothing omegas—and he notes in the back of his mind that it isn't a tone he uses very often. If ever.

It's not cold out, but it's not warm either, and omegas being more sensitive to temperature than even humans has worry biting at Adam's heart. The wolf-formed Noah is shivering slightly, or shaking maybe, and he looks far more reluctant to come out than he should be with Adam there. If it weren't for his clothes and the public nature of the area, the alpha would shift in a heartbeat to coax him more easily.

"Hey,
sweetheart
, c'mere," Adam tries again, holding out a hand this time that Noah stares at for a few seconds before sniffing, his ears flicking back before perking forward. And then, just like that, the wolf is shuffling out of his hidey hole in a way that Adam can't deny is kind of adorable.

Noah butts into him like an eager house dog, bodily pressing in and while maybe he doesn't lap at his face, doesn't display some of the more intimate signs of a connection, this is still a lot more than they had before and that means that something is very,
very
wrong.

The omega's not mute. They're werewolves—he could communicate with Adam if he needed to. But he hasn't yet. He's silent and skittish and nervous and with the omega's body riding high on instinct and his wolf-oriented mind in dominant control it's a lot more honest than Noah probably usually is with people, he bets.

Adam rubs the sides of his head, his ears, his muzzle, and then, once Noah's relaxed a little he tries to pull away.

Noah releases a scared yip-like whine that has Adam bending down again.

"
Shh, shh
. Quiet, okay? Quiet… I'm going to take you inside, alright? You're safe; I'm not going anywhere. Just come with me and you'll be fine."

Noah goes silent again, standing, ears pulled back and head submissively bowed, tail still and limp. Something
really
bad happened, that much is pretty damn obvious. Omega wolves might be gentler than their alpha counterparts but they're usually not beaten
this low
easily.

Adam quickly guides Noah inside, the omega so close he brushes his shin the whole way there, and, luckily, none of his neighbors catch him bringing an enormous wolf into his apartment.

He expects Noah to change forms once he's safely inside but the omega doesn't, and he doesn't leave Adam's side. As the alpha walks to the sofa to sit down, Noah follows as though he's Adam's shadow. His eyes are dulled, overcast with fear and melancholy and Adam honestly can't fathom what could have happened to trigger such distress in Noah but it
pulls
at Adam's heart, having a profounder effect on him that he would have expected.

Noah doesn't join him on the sofa, he hovers in front of Adam, as though he isn't happy with this arrangement, he's
waiting
for something—but how Adam is supposed to find out
what
, he doesn't have the faintest idea.

"What happened?" the alpha asks, tone gentle. And then, in an attempt at light, playful humor, he adds, "Whose ass do I need to kick?"

Noah only continues to regard him with those large, sad eyes and Adam knows, in that moment, that Noah doesn't want to talk, not tonight.

"Can I… stay here for the night?"
Adam hears the omega enquire, and with the subdued despondency of his voice, Adam suspects he might have been crying, alone, which churns up all kinds of negative emotion inside the alpha.

He's serious about kicking someone's ass, if it comes to that. Noah might not be his mate but he's the mother of his child and Adam doesn't appreciate some idiot making the omega sob his heart out while hiding behind a dumpster in the middle of the night. Omegas aren't supposed to be treated like that, ever.

Adam nods quickly in reply.

"Yeah, sure," he complies, and it's easy, because he
doesn't
mind if Noah stays the night. That way Adam knows that he's safe. "I'll take the sofa—"

"No, I—"
The mental connection between them tapers off for a moment as Noah goes silent, his eyes ducking to the ground in what Adam can only perceive as embarrassment.
"I don't want to be alone."

Adam absorbs this, taking it in, and then nods. "Do you also want to stay in that form?"

The werewolf is silent for longer than he needs to be, possibly thinking it over or maybe fearful of what the alpha will say. Eventually he confirms with a quiet,
"Yes."

"Alright," Adam agrees. It seems like Noah's really frightened and there's only one real way to make him more comfortable. Plus, it's late, Adam's had a long shift, and while he doesn't have work in the morning that doesn't mean that he's not tired. Truthfully, it seems like they could both use some rest and then, when the omega's more comfortable, he can tell him about it in the morning.

Adam stands, tugging his t-shirt up over his head, and laughs when he sees Noah watching him.

"I don't mind if you see me naked, but it's up to you," the alpha jokes, and Noah, catching on, jerks his head away in embarrassment. Deciding that that's good enough, Adam continues to strip down and if the omega maybe peeks at him while he's at it the alpha hardly minds.

It isn't very long until he joins the other as a wolf, the transformation easy and practiced, and Noah stares at him once he's done, looking him over Adam thinks. The alpha's naturally bigger than the omega, no surprise there.

There's safety in the werewolf form—a simplicity in the lean, strong muscles of a beast like this, driven and appeased as easily as their pure wolf brethren. Adam's mind mellows out, human logic falling secondary to animal rationalizing, and so he's not hesitant about nudging the omega near him until Noah's standing, leading him into the alpha's bedroom.

God, his blankets are going to be
covered
in fur after this, Adam thinks with some mirth.

Noah seems to understand his silent instructions and, at the alpha's continued prodding, the smaller wolf hops up onto the bed, making himself comfortable and curling tight, like he's afraid of taking up too much space. When Adam goes up after him, flopping down heavy and lazy and making the bed bounce, Noah jolts and seems to unwind after that.

The omega quickly tires, exhausted off of emotions and pregnancy and whatever event led him here, and Adam manages to get him to uncurl a little. It feels too right to bundle up together like this, and the night drifts into a peaceful lull with Adam's head resting over Noah's neck, guarding and reassuring.

He falls asleep to the sound of the omega's soft breathing.
