CHAPTER 16

Fall comes early in Northern Idaho. Maggie sat on her porch with a blanket over her lap. She closed her eyes and let the sun beat on her face.

“Lovely day,” a voice said from behind her.

She didn’t turn around or open her eyes. “What can I help you with?”

“I was wondering if you were hiring over at that fancy restaurant of yours.” The question hung in the air.

“We may need a dishwasher.” She shrugged. “You can show up on Tuesday when we open. Cari will get you an application.”

A chair squeaked, as it was drug across the deck. She felt his weight as the person sat across from her. “I’d rather interview with you, here.”

She sighed. “Do you have any experience?”

A chuckle came from across the table. “I’ve been working in restaurants since I was able to walk.”

“That’s a bit of an exaggeration.” Maggie opened her eyes and gazed at the man sitting across from her.

Josh held up a hand. “I swear. You can call my papa if you doubt my word.”

“How is he?” They’d talked once a week since he left, but somehow, not everything got said during their Saturday night calls. She refilled her coffee cup with the carafe on the table. “Coffee?”

He shook his head. “I’ve had my share today. I drove the truck up this time, filled to the brim with my stuff. I’ll need a place to stay too.” He rolled his shoulders. “Papa’s fine. He had to have heart surgery once I got back. I would have been here sooner, but I didn’t want to leave before he was in the clear.”

“I might be able to help you with a place to stay. Tami’s back in school.” She smiled. “She had a terrific first year. You should have seen her grades.”

“And your mom?” He leaned over and rested his forearms on his thighs. “How is she?”

“Better. You’d never know she had a hip replacement at the beginning of summer. Destiny’s still living with her though. Mom won’t let Destiny leave until she has the business up and running. I think she likes the company.”

They were quiet for a minute, just looking at each other.

Finally he looked up at her. “I missed you.” He paused. “A lot. I don’t want to be anywhere but where you are. Here or where ever we end up.”

“I guess I missed you too.”

He stood and pulled her to her feet and into his arms. “You guess?”

His kiss engulfed her and when he let her loose, she nodded. “I’m pretty sure. Kiss me again so I can make for certain.”

He kissed her quickly. “That’s about the longest I want to ever be away from you.”

She leaned into his arms. “That sounds good to me.”

Letter from the Author

Castle View is set in a fictional town in northern Idaho. I can hear the cats roaring as I walk through the wooded forest. At least as I sit here imagining the scene. Roadside Attraction is book 2 of the series. I loved the unexpected fine dining restaurant we found in the Tiger Café during Wild Hearts, and I knew Maggie Castle needed her own happy ever after.

Wild Hearts is the first book dealing with the tiger sanctuary and bringing oldest son, Mark Castle home after his father’s death.

Project Detour - Book 3- Pre-order now.

Every day is a struggle, but he won't let his business and everyone that depends on him down. Besides, he only needs her for six weeks.

Destiny Brooks has bigger problems than a golden-boy who always had everything he wanted. Problems that included busting through the roadblocks in her path to open St. Josephs’ first Physical Therapy business. Even with his mother’s constant matchmaking attempts, Destiny won't lose herself for the sake of a relationship, not again.

Can Brad open himself up to the possibilities of a world beyond work before Destiny finishes her assignment and moves on?
