The approaching lion backed away immediately, still not taking his eyes off of Ameera. Once she climbed down from William’s back, he shifted back to human form. She had quickly gotten used to being around naked men, but still, she averted her eyes. Out of the ten lions that she could see, eight of them shifted to their human form. The ranged in age and looks, but there were all unanimously handsome in their own way. Her thoughts quickly jumped to Rohan, Cindy’s husband, and she wondered if he too was a shifter. Then, trickling into another thought, wondered if the website was completely designed for shifters alone. She would have to ask Marcus about it when he returned.

“She’s been imprinted.” A short, but muscular tan man stated. He had honey brown eyes are dark, curly hair that fell just below his ears.

“Yes,” William confirmed. “She is the mate of Marcus.”

The short man with honey eyes stepped towards her and extended his hand. “Then you are now and forever under the protection of this pride. My name is Thomas. Welcome.”

Ameera placed her hand in his and he raised it to his lips, giving her a chaste kiss. Those that were in human for came forward to introduce themselves. She had just received the last hand-kiss from a shifter named Linus when those still in lion form erupted into angry roars. The men shifted, gathering to form a protective circle around Ameera.

Minutes later, a lion with a large mane, walked in with two tigers, one on each side. When the lion stopped, the two tigers immediately sunk to the ground and turned on their backs, showing their tender bellies as a sign of surrender and compliance.

Marcus shifted, but remained still, waiting for his pride to make their first move. Though the final decision was up to him, he still wanted the pride to exercise their rights to protect their home from outsiders.

“Marcus, what is the meaning of this?” William was the only one that had not shifted, giving him the ability to speak.

“They have come to us for protection. Raja is no longer a leader, but merely an insane, cruel shifter. They have asked for sanctuary.”

As if on cue, the twins shifted, rising only to their knees, hands resting on their thighs.  Thomas shifted, his face full of distrust.

“How can you trust them?” he snarled, ready to strike.

Marcus walked forward, breaking the circle of lions to draw Ameera into his arms. “Because he tried to take Ameera from me last night. I saw him. The twins, Antonio and Keelan, are right. He has gone insane.”

William nodded in agreement. “It is true, the Tiger has lost his senses and abandoned the laws of our kind.”

“So what are you suggesting, then?” A lion shifted to their right; a pale, sandy blonde man, taking place of the lion that once stood there.

“I suggest that we accept them. That we welcome them into our pride. We can always use more brothers.”

Shouts of protest from both lion and man filled the cave.

“The time for segregation is over,” Marcus stated firmly. With each passing year more fall into the danger of insanity as their mates are not found. It is time to shifters to stand together against those that would harm our way of life.” His tone held power, sending out a subtle command to obey. Each lion, even Ameera, could feel it.

“Very well.” The voice came down from one of the higher landings, an older lion, who until now had stayed in his more comfortable form, shifted into his human self. His body was scarred, but still very muscular. Only his dark gray hair told of how old he really was. “The King is right. Perhaps it is time for a change.”

Marcus looked up at him, giving him a single nod appreciation. “It is settled then. We will welcome any shifter who comes to us, given that they are coming for the true purpose of safety.” As he finished speaking the words, he shifted, roaring loudly. His men followed him, shifting to their lion form and joining in the chorus of roars.

CHAPTER 9

Ameera nervously ran a hand down the beautiful white fabric that was her dress. A month had gone by since that night at the lion’s lair. It took some time to adjust, but the twins were fully accepted into the family several days later. Ameera and Marcus had spent a week in the lair with the other lions before Marcus deemed it safe to return to the city. She would be lying, though, if she said she hadn’t loved it. Though she couldn’t shift, she still loved running and hunting with the pride. At night, after they would eat, they would pile together around a fire and Ameera would be fall asleep amongst the soft, warm bodies of her massive cats.

At least once a day, Marcus would steal her away to a secluded part of the jungle so they could make love. Now that he understood how healthy her appetite was, he ravaged her in a new, robust way. She loved how animalistic he had become with her, and he loved he could be that free with her.

It wasn’t until they had decided to make their way back to the city that she even bothered to dress again. Now that she knew how freeing it was to be naked all of the time, clothes bothered her. What she used to feel was a great way of self expression was now annoying and just plain old unnecessary.

Marcus loved that she spent most of her time in his high-rise apartment, and looked forward to coming home to her every day, knowing she wouldn’t have a stitch on.  In between hours of rigorous love- making, Ameera would savor the moments when he would shift for her so she could sprawl out over his fuzzy figure and watch TV together.

But today was a day of clothes. A day of fancy words, fancy clothes, and fancy human forms. Today was their wedding day.  A knock sounded on her door and opened. As a wedding present, Marcus had flown Cindy, Sasha, and Ameera’s family down to Sydney. Cindy and Sasha stepped into the room, grinning from ear to ear.

“You look so beautiful, Sweetie,” Cindy cooed, embracing her in a tight hug. Behind her Rohan appeared, ever protective of his precious wife. Just as she suspected, Rohan had turned out to be a shifter as well.

“So what are you?” she asked boldly at dinner one night. Cindy smiled mischievously while Marcus looked towards him, just as eager for an answer. Rohan smiled devilishly, holding a finger to his lips.

“It’s a secret,” was all he would say. Even Cindy wouldn’t tell, and she normally told Ameera everything.

In the early morning both Cindy and Sasha worked together to do Ameera’s hair, makeup, and nails. Now that she had her dress on, she was ready. Deciding to stay true to her old style, Ameera had chosen a white, empire waist gown with off the shoulder sleeves. She had attached a delicate gold chain around her waist and a matching collar to her throat. Aside from her engagement ring, that was the only jewelry she wore.

Cindy had wound her dark hair into big simple curls that fell over her shoulders. Wanting to keep it simple, Sasha gave her light make up, just enough to give her a natural glow. Against her mother’s wishes, Ameera had even decided against shoes, and would walk down the aisle barefoot.

The three women were chatting excitedly when Ameera’s mother walked in.

“It’s time, My Love. Are you ready?”

Ameera took a final sip of her champagne to steady her nerves and nodded, smiling widely.

Marcus had tried his best to say his vows in a steady voice but had failed miserably. As he spoke of everlasting love and protection his eyes had watered and his voice broke. This simply made Ameera love him more. She got through her vows as best she could before her own tears began to fall, and they both laughed in relief when the priest finally announced them husband and wife.

The reception was a blast. After the ceremony, which was held underneath a white tent in the botanical gardens of Sydney, they made the short walk to the reception. Marcus had paid a small fortune to have entire twenty acres to themselves, but it was worth it. There wedding guests had free roam of the entire gardens, giving them the chance to take strolls through the fields of flowers and green houses. More importantly, tall walls and an iron gate, keeping out unwanted guests, protected the grounds. On this most sacred night, they would not have to worry about Raja or anyone else that would try to do them harm.

“Well, my dear Wife,” Marcus asked, pulling her into his arms for their first dance, “how have you enjoyed the day so far?”

She giggled, standing on her toes to kiss his lips. “It is, without a doubt, the loveliest day of my life.” As they music carried them away, her face grew more serious.

“What is it, Luv? You look distressed.”

“I was just thinking about my life-about what it would be like if you hadn’t found me.”

He could hear the forlorn in her voice and pulled her fully into his arms, not caring that their guests were curious to why he stopped mid dance.

“I will always find you,” he whispered into her ear, kissing her lobe. “No matter what, I will spend the rest of my life keeping you safe and happy.”

Marcus could feel her relax into his arms, and he began the dance again.

Ameera smiled up at him. “Us,” she corrected, looking mischievous.

              “Excuse me?” Marcus asked, puzzled.

“You will spend the rest of your life keeping
us
safe and happy.”

It took him a moment, but when realization dawned on him he stopped, completely at a loss for words.

              “You mean you’re…”

“Yes. Looks like were going to have a little cub or two running around soon,” she teased.
