Mika was busy kissing the puppy’s head and caressing his tummy that she almost missed something hanging around its neck. When it brushed her hand, she looked beneath his neck and saw a ring. Arching a brow, she removed the dog’s collar and slipped the ring into her palm.

When she looked back at him, he was on his knee with that look in his eyes she would never tire seeing.

“Degan, I—I…”

“Will you marry me?”

“How could I say no to that face?” She joked through her tears. Rushing forward, she slipped to her knees. With the puppy in one arm she wrapped the other, holding the ring around Degan’s neck. “Yes.” She kissed him. “I will marry you.”

His arms snaked around her, pressing her tightly into his body. The puppy whimpered and he released her slightly. “Sorry, pal,” Degan apologized.

“Daddy, didn’t mean it,” Mika grinned.

Laughing, Degan pulled her arm from around him and took the ring from her. He slid it onto her finger and sealed it by kissing the finger.

“Now that I have a future wife. How about you give this little boy a name?”

“It’s a boy?” Mika asked, lifting one of the puppy’s leg to look for herself.

“Oh no! I know boy, you feel violated.” Degan laughed.

“Oh you two,” Mika scoffed softly. “Okay—I think your name will be
Kibou
.”

“Why Kibou?”

Mika brushed her tears of happiness away and re-wrapped an arm around his neck. “It’s Japanese for hope. I remember it because in high school, Archie Fielding tried teaching me Japanese. I don’t remember much of it, but I do remember kibou because I would repeat it at nights just before I fall asleep. This little one gives me hope for us, Dee. He gives me so much hope.”

“I’m glad, Mika, because on my way home I was terrified you loved me, but not enough to be my wife.”

“Are you kidding? Being your wife is so important to me—so important and it’s not a job I will take lightly.”

She leaned forward and took his lips again. Mika knew she had been giving a second chance at life. She knew becoming Mrs. Moira would be the happiest day of her life. Looking forward to the future and everything that came with it, she allowed him to pull her to her feet and lead her into the house with their little hope, Kibou, squirming in her arms.

He whispered his love for her and Mika couldn’t help the smile of absolute euphoria that spread across her face.
