WORDS, TERMS & PHRASES

Genesisity

Green
political and environmental movement which drives the policies and targets of many companies, organisations and governments in the early part of the twenty first century.

Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
– Required in the United States of America when operating heavy and hazardous goods vehicles.

Confab
– An informal private conversation or discussion.

[Author note: This is a strange word since it has an almost identical sister word which many people also use,
conflab
. Apparently, according to my research, conflab evolved from confab as an informal colloquialism. It now appears to have taken on a life of its own, so much so there is some question as to which is correct. I originally wrote conflab, but since confab is the original I opted to use that instead. ]

Rooves
– Plural for roof.

[Author note: I always find the word
rooves
as a more intuitive and smoother sounding word than its more frequently utilised cousin,
roofs
. Rooves appears to have gone out of favour over the years and some now consider it incorrect.]

Get
– Informal term for offspring / children.

Lucked out
– A phrase to mean someone or something has been the beneficiary of good luck.

[Author note: Conversely many people also use this term to mean the exact opposite, i.e. you ran out of luck, which—when looking at it—makes more sense. It appears that some consider the meaning of
lucked out
to be a divide between the UK and USA, where people in the UK believe it to mean you’ve received bad luck and people in the USA to mean they’ve received good luck; this doesn’t appear to hold true, however, and many people on either side of the Atlantic have their own opinion on it. Some even expand on the phrase and use it in other ways, i.e. you’re a right luck out.]

Fubar
– Fucked up beyond all recognition. Verb: to fubar, fubared.

Numpty
– Foolish or stupid person.
