“That was as great as I thought it
would be.” He pulled her towards him and tried to kiss her but she pulled away
and panicked. She pushed her breasts back into her dress and ran out of the
room quickly.

“Brynn wait.” She heard a voice
call after her but she didn’t look back. She kept running until she came to the
emergency staircase and ran down the stairs. There was no way she was going to
wait for the elevator. She ran to the bathroom and went into one of the stalls and
cried. She felt like a tramp. She had lied to herself, she knew that now. She
could never date Doug; she just didn’t see him like that. No matter how nice he
had been to her. She washed her face and walked back into the ballroom
determined to grab Barb and the kids and to go home. She wasn’t going to go
back to the job. She just couldn’t face Doug again. She felt bad about leaving
Lucky there by herself but she had Daz, she didn’t need Brynn.

“Hey.” She ran up to Barb and the
kids. “Are you ready to go?”

“Now?” Barb looked up at her in
disappointment. “I was hoping to see Doug before we went.”

“What?” Brynn looked at her in
confusion.

“Yeah. I wanted to talk to him
about art. He’s hot.” Barb grinned. “You didn’t tell me your boss was so cute.
I think I have a crush on him.”

“You do?” Brynn looked at her in
distress, her stomach falling with worry. “I, I didn’t know.”

“That’s what I was telling you,
silly.” Barb laughed. “Before you ran off. I think he may be my Christmas
boyfriend.”

“Oh.” Brynn bit her lip, unsure of
what to do. There was no way she could tell her friend that she had just fucked
her new crush and was already regretting it. This was a disaster.

“Oh, here comes Lucky.” Barb
danced around grinning.

“Hey girls.” Lucky beamed at them.
She was standing with a tall handsome black man, who Brynn recognized as one of
the lawyers at the firm that Doug worked with. “Adrian and I are going to go
hit up a dance club and hang out.” She wriggled her body against his and he
grinned at Barb and Brynn.

“What?” Brynn looked at her in
confusion. “What are you talking about?”

“We’re leaving now, Brynn.” Lucky
smiled at Adrian. “I swear she acts like my mother sometimes.”

“You can’t go.” Brynn’s voice was
angry.

“What? Why?” Lucky looked at her
in confusion.

“What about Daz?”

“What about him?” Lucky frowned.
“I spoke to him and everything is sorted out. He forgave me.”

“Forgave you?” It was Brynn’s turn
to look confused. “What are you talking about?”

Lucky sighed and wrapped Adrian’s
arms around her waist. “I didn’t wanna tell you this now but there’s no point for
you to be mad at Daz forever. He’s a good guy.”

“But he cheated on you,” Brynn
cried out.

Lucky looked worried for a second
and laughed as Adrian’s hands worked their way up to her breasts and started
squeezing. “Adrian,” she giggled.

Brynn was too angry to care that
Adrian was publicly groping her sister. “Lucky!”

“Sorry,” she sighed. “Look, I lied
okay. I cheated on him. He didn’t cheat on me.”

“What?” Brynn looked shocked.

“Yeah, I kinda had a fling with
the football coach.” Lucky giggled. “Turns out that some of Daz’s friends were
on the team and saw us in the locker room.”

“Lucky, are you joking right now?”
Brynn felt the color rush out of her face. “You told me Daz cheated on you.”

“Well, he wouldn’t sleep with me
and I had needs.” Lucky giggled and kissed Adrian before turning back to Brynn.
“Anyway, Daz was more interested in you than he was in me.”

“What? What do you mean?”

“He always wanted to know what you
were doing or who you were dating. I think he only dated me to get closer to
you.”

“What?” Brynn felt her body tingle
with hope and then she remembered that she had just fucked Doug. “Why didn’t
you tell me this?”

“What was I going to say, Brynn?
Hey, my boyfriend wants to date you and hey I’m sleeping with the football
coach?” Lucky laughed. “Anyway, Adrian and I have stuff to do, seeya.” And with
that, she and Adrian danced out of the room.

“Are you okay, Brynn?” Barb looked
at her with concern.

“I’m not sure.” Brynn felt herself
go light-headed and then she fainted.

***

“Brynn, are you okay?” Barb was on
her knees looking down at her as she opened her eyes.

“Yeah,” Brynn groaned as she tried
to stand up. She almost fainted again when she saw Daz and Doug standing there.
“I’m fine. Can we go home please?” She didn’t want to deal with either of them
and tried to avoid eye contact.

“Oh Brynn, is there anything I can
do to help?” Doug rushed up to her and she flinched. She didn’t want him to
touch her. She didn’t want Barb to know what had happened.

“I’m fine!” she shouted, louder
than she wanted. “Thanks.” She closed her eyes hoping that the ground would
cave in and she would die.

“Are you sure?” He paused. “I can
take you home if you want.”

“No.” Both Brynn and Daz retorted
and she looked at him in surprise.

“Ok.” Doug looked at them in
confusion. “If you’re sure.”

“Let’s let them talk for a second,
Doug.” Barb grabbed his arm and took him to a chair. He went readily and they
easily fell into conversation.

“Are you okay, Brynn?” Daz looked
at her in concern.

“I’m fine.” She flushed staring
into his worried eyes. She felt a stilling in her heart as she realized how
much this man meant to her. “I wanted to apologize.”

“Really?” He smiled at her. “I’m
shocked.”

“I should have paid for your car
damage. I was irresponsible and should have had insurance. You shouldn’t have
to foot the bill for that.”

Uhm
,
okay.” He grinned. “I thought you were apologizing for something else?”

“Oh?” She looked at his handsome
face puzzled. “For what?”

“For running out on me just now.”
He grinned.

“What?” She frowned. “Oh.” She
felt a burst of happiness in her stomach rising up. “You mean, just now in the
hotel room?” She studied his face.

“Of course.” He leaned down and
kissed her on the lips. “I didn’t mean for our first time to be standing up
next to the wall but I couldn’t keep my hands off of you.”

“Oh.” She grinned back at him in
happiness.

“I had candles and rose petals on
the bed.” He put his arms around her.

“Oh.” She leaned into him and
closed her eyes. She had just had sex with Daz; everything was all right in the
world again. She should have known that it wasn’t Doug; nothing about him oozed
sex and she didn’t feel anything when she was around him. With Daz, she felt
butterflies and sparks of electricity.

“I hope my note wasn’t too
forward.”

“It wasn’t.” She nibbled his lip.

“I wasn’t sure if you would come.”
He stared into her eyes. “I thought you were going to hate me forever. When I
realized that Lucky had lied to you as well.”

“You had a crush on me in high school?”
She grinned at him, cutting him off.

“Yeah.” He smiled down at her.
“You were always on my mind.”

“I had a crush on you too.” She
smiled shyly.

“I kinda figured.” He smiled. “I
hoped that perhaps you felt the same way now.”

“I do.” She moaned as his hands
caressed her ass.

“Good.” He kissed her nose. “Do
you want to go and check out the bed and candles now?”

“Maybe.” She glanced over at Barb
and Doug and smiled blissfully. He had his arm around her and Jane was sitting
on his lap, snuggled into him. “Yes, yes. Let’s go.” She smiled at Daz happily.
“But let me just tell Barb.”

She walked over to Barb who jumped
up as she approached. “Hey, I’m going with Daz, is that okay?”

“Yes! Yes.” Barb hugged her and
squealed, “It looks like we both got our wish.”

Brynn smiled at her friend. “Yup.
Santa got us two pretty great presents.”

“Yup.” Barb grabbed her hand and
they danced around. “We both got a boyfriend for Christmas.”

“Jane,
you will not believe it,” I squealed into the phone. “For once, my name has
helped me.”

“What
Sarah?” Jane whispered into the phone. “I can’t talk long. My boss is riding my
ass.”

“So, you
know how today was my first day at Zoom Corp. as a receptionist?” I could
barely contain my excitement.

“Uh huh.”

“Well, I
am now a top executive working for Mr. Green himself. And the best part is, he
is out of town indefinitely, so I have enough time to become as top executive
ready as is possible.”

“What?”
Jane’s voice increased in volume. “How did that happen? No
offense
but you are
not a top executive, Sarah.”

I laughed
into the phone. “
Shh
. So it turns out that another
Sarah Smith was hired for the executive position but when I turned up, they
just assumed that I was that Sarah Smith. I mean, I thought they were rather
nice to the new receptionist but it turns out that they thought I was the
exec.”

“Sarah,”
Jane’s voice was worried. “What are you going to do when the real Sarah Smith
shows up? Then you’ll be out of a job period and I do not make enough money to
pay the full rent.”

“Don’t
worry about it, Jane.” I looked around before I said my next words. “I called
the other Sarah Smith and apologized to her but said the position was filled
and we no longer needed her. I felt bad because it turns out she was really
sick with the flu. But the girl went to Harvard Business School. She’ll be
fine.”

“Oh my
gosh. Sarah!” Jane laughed into the phone. “What did you do?”

“It’s
okay.” I laughed. “No-one knows who the other Sarah is, turns out she only did
a phone interview because she was doing some internship in London.”

“Well, if
you think you can get away with it.” Jane sounded unsure.

“Jane, I
didn’t go to school for four years to be an actress for nothing.” I spoke in an
English accent. “It’s going to be fine. And get this, I am making $150,000 a
year.”

“Whoa.”

“Right.
We can move out of our dump and actually move into the city.”

“Can we
move to the Upper West Side?”

“Hello…”
I laughed. “I’ve already been looking at newspaper ads and Craigslist.”

“Sarah, I
don’t know.” Jane’s voice still sounded unsure. “Do you really think you can
get away with this?”

“I know
so. My new boss, Lewis Walker loves me. I think he has a crush on me. There is
no way that he will fire me.” I played with my long blonde hair as I walked to
the subway station and smiled to myself. “Something is finally going right,
Jane. Maybe you can even quit that shitty job.”
