A NOTE ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Meir Shalev was born in 1948 on Nahalal, Israel’s first moshav, and is one of Israel’s most celebrated novelists. His books have been translated into more than twenty languages and have been bestsellers in Israel, Holland, and Germany. In 1999 the author was awarded the Juliet Club Prize (Italy). Shalev is also the recipient of the Prime Minister’s Prize (Israel), the Chiavari (Italy), the Entomological Prize (Israel), the WIZO Prize (France, Israel, and Italy), and, in 2006, the Brenner Prize, the highest Israeli literary recognition awarded, for
A Pigeon and a Boy.

A columnist for the Israeli daily
Yedioth Ahronoth,
Shalev lives in Jerusalem and in the north of Israel with his wife and children.

A NOTE ABOUT THE TRANSLATOR

Evan Fallenberg was born in the United States; he is a writer, translator, and teacher now living in Israel. The recipient of a MacDowell Colony artist’s fellowship, he is also the author of the novel
Light Fell.

A NOTE ON THE TYPE

The Hoefler Text and Hoefler Titling families of typefaces, designed by Jonathan Hoefler, celebrate some favorite aspects of two beloved old-style typefaces: Janson and Garamond No. 3. Unwittingly, the names Janson and Garamond both honor men unconnected with these designs: Janson is named for Dutch printer Anton Janson, but based on types cut by Hungarian punchcutter Nicholas Kis; Garamond is a revival of types thought to have originated with Claude Garamond in the sixteenth century, but in fact made a century later by Swiss typefounder Jean Jannon. Hoefler Text and Hoefler Titling are published by the digital typefoundry Hoefler & Frere-Jones.
