“Have you been good for
your mother,
Larya
?” Slava asked Illarion.

“Oh, yes. I am
hoping
Chys Khan
will bring me a new sled this year. Vasya and I broke my old
one when we crashed it into a tree.”

The door opened letting in a blast of
cold air. Kolya and Alena entered with little Aleksandr in his
daddy’s arms. After calling out a greeting, Alena hurried down to
the kitchen. Kolya walked over to the children and sat on a chair.
He quickly divested Aleksandr of his snow suit before slipping out
of his own coat.

“Maggie, how is Slava treating you? If
he gives you any problems, you let me know.” Kolya winked at
her.

“He treats me like a queen. You have
nothing to worry about.” Maggie looked up at Slava and patted his
knee.

“Of course. All lycans are devoted to
their mates.”

The door opened again and Maggie
couldn’t help but shiver when the cold hit her. A soft shawl was
lowered onto her shoulders. She smiled in thanks at Slava and he
winked at her. She loved how he took care of her.

Dmitry entered, followed by several
elderly couples. They came in talking and laughing and carried
packages in their hands, which were quickly placed under the tree.
Dmitry helped the older people find places to sit before walking up
to the group guarding the children.

“Where is Violet? I think our special
guest will be arriving any minute.” He looked first at Maggie and
then at his pack members.

“She’s in the kitchen making sure
dinner doesn’t burn,” Maggie answered.

“I’ll go fetch her then.” Dmitry
headed down the hall to the kitchen.

“Are we late?” Fanya asked as she
entered the lodge, followed by Andrei.

“No, Mama, he hasn’t come yet,”
Illarion said solemnly.

Fanya walked over and gave Slava and
Illarion a kiss before taking a seat on the floor next to Maggie.
Andrei shook hands with Kolya and leaned against the wall next to
the fireplace.

“I am so glad you are here to enjoy
Christmas with us, Maggie. Slava told me he intends to move to
America with you.” Fanya handed Karina her stuffed wolf off the
floor.

Maggie nodded. “I know you will miss
him. Zhora and Zhenya are coming too. We will have the beginnings
of our own pack. Maybe next year you can come to Virginia for
Christmas.”

“I will ask Andrei if we can. I would
love to visit. The Matveynikov twins can be a little wild. Are you
sure you can handle them?”

“I think so. They want Slava to be
their Alpha.” Maggie was proud of Slava. It was a great honor to
chosen to lead.

A loud knock sounded on the front
door. Violet, Alena, and Dmitry hurried out of the kitchen. All
attention turned to Dmitry as he went over and opened the
door.

The children clapped their
hands in delight when, instead of Santa Claus in his jolly red
suit,
Chys Khan
in his blue and white Sakha outfit walked through the door
carrying his staff, accompanied by the snow maiden
Khaarchana
.

“S

!” called
Chys Khan

“S Novim

!”
Khaarchana
exclaimed.

A large bag full of
packages was brought in, and soon the area around the tree was
full.

began to hand out gifts to all the children while
Chys Khan
gave each
child a hug and a bag of treats. Maggie helped Karina open her
present, a wooden doll with a pretty pink dress. Illarion helped
Katya open a similar doll with a lavender dress. Dmitry joined
Slava on the couch and pulled Violet over to sit on his lap. Alena
hurried over to Kolya and Aleksandr to help open their son’s
present.

After the children
received their gifts, presents were handed out to the elders, and
then to the other adults. Maggie gasped with surprise when
Chys Khan
handed a
package to her. She glanced up at Slava. He winked and continued to
help Illarion unwrap his gift, a new sled.

Chys Khan
handed a package to Slava. Illarion immediately
encouraged his uncle to rip off the paper. Maggie loved seeing the
look of disbelief turn to one of delight. He opened the
Zhaleyka
she had bought
him, and then brought it to his lips and played a few notes to try
it out.

He nodded at Maggie. “Open
yours,
detka
.”

Maggie unwrapped the paper to find the
wooden horse pulling the sleigh. She blinked back tears as she
remembered the day in the village and the wish she put on the Yule
log. Slava made all her Christmas wishes come true.

“Thank you.”

“Always,
