Adam ran up the stairs to be with her. “I'm so sorry, Anna, I really am.”

He looked past her and into the bedroom where he could see Peter Cameron completely out of it on the bed. Beside him on the floor lay the dead body of the Hundeprest, the cross acting as a stake through the heart. It was enough to kill any vampire.

“Henry said it would be better if...”

“Better if you didn't have to kill me yourself? Better if the Hundeprest did your job for you?”

“I'm so sorry, Anna,” repeated Adam, tears now streaming down his face.

“There's no need to be sorry. I knew the moment that you arrived what would happen. So what now?”

“I love you, Anna.”

“I love you too, Adam, and that's why I was so pleased that Jacob and the Council sent you so that I could see you one last time.”

Adam broke down. “I can't do this. I really can't do this. I love you, Anna.”

“If you love me, you will do it. Otherwise, Henry will send someone else and I want you to be the last person I see and touch.”

“I love you Anna,” Adam said through the tears.

“I love you too, Adam. Now, do it.”

Adam looked into Anna's deep green eyes for the last time.
