Reaching where the police car and ambulance sat, Kris raced through the cops and skidded to a halt. “No,” he breathed feeling ill. “Courtney,” he whispered moving closer. Growling when someone touched him he tore loose. “That’s my mate, back off,” he snarled at the cop that tried to stop him.

The cop let him go and pulled back. “She’s hurting right now, let the paramedics take care of her.” He pulled back slightly and nodded. “We will walk over to see her but I need to ask you some questions Mister…” He trailed off as he led Kristof to the roadside where Courtney lay.

“Farkas, Kristof Farkas,” he said as he made his way to Courtney’s side. “Oh god,” he breathed in a low whisper of agonized sound as he caught sight of her. Moving quicker he eased in at her side and looked her over cursing himself internally over and over.

It was as if she knew he was there, opening her eyes. “Kris?” It was thready and weak, the pain in her voice echoing the pain in her body. She wanted to touch him, needed to touch him but her body simply wouldn’t respond, she couldn’t reach out as much as she wanted to.

“Yeah, love, I’m here,” he whispered, his relief a swift hit of endorphins to his brain that he nearly passed out upon hearing her voice. Bending over her he gently touched a finger to her cheek, trying to find something that wasn’t scratch up or bruising. “Hi,” he smiled slightly at her feeling like an idiot. “I didn’t mean to be an ass, love,” he whispered.

“Don’t leave me, Kris?” She was fearful he was going to disappear. “Please, no matter what, don’t let me go?” She was begging and knew she shouldn’t, but she hurt, was terrified and was afraid the one good thing in her life was leaving her. “Promise me?” She whispered feeling the darkness closing in on her with the IV line ran.

“Mister Farkas?” the paramedic asked, slightly recognizing Kris. “Sir, I just gave her something for the pain but I need to get in and closer to her to get her ready for flight.” Seeing the look in his eyes he added, “We are airlifting her out of here, sir. She’s really very bad so you need to back off and let us do our job if you want her to live.”

Grinding his teeth together Kris looked to his mate. “I’m right here, baby,” he whispered to her. “I’m not going anywhere, I promise you. I’ll be right here,” he breathed as she slid under. Kissing her lightly on the lips he couldn’t help but feel it was going to be the last time and it scared him. Turning his eyes on the medic, he straightened to his full height and looked down at him. “Anything, any-single-thing happens to her and I will not be a happy Wolf, clear?” he asked softly, his eyes full Wolf at the pain he knew his mate to be in.

The paramedic swallowed hard and nodded. “I will personally stick to her side like glue till we get her on the copter, Mister Farkas.” The kid would need to have a change of pants, but that could be later when he got the lady to the helicopter. “You should be able to ride in the copter with us, Mister Farkas, I will hand her off to the flight medic.” Because he wasn’t trained to be on the flight. “I think the cops want you.” He looked over his shoulder at the officer who was watching Kris with a prejudicial eye.

Curling his lip Kris turned his head and then nearly groaned seeing who was watching him so closely. Rolling his eyes he looked back at the medic. “I’ll be watching, you do anything and trust me when I say this, no one here can stop me before I have your intestines braided into a hat for myself.” Smiling cheerfully at the man whose fear levels had spiked through the roof, Kris walked toward the cop, his body relaxing to fight ready. “Fancy meeting you here.”

“Yeah, yeah.” the man said and looked serious a moment. “Your mate?” It was a simple statement, one made out of concern for everyone there. “Who would have wanted your mate hurt, Kristof?”

“Yes, my mate,” he said crossing his arms over his chest, only just realizing he only had on a pair of jeans. “I honestly don’t know who would want her hurt,” he muttered shaking his head as he shifted to keep his eyes on the medic. Then something clicked, but it made no sense, he thought with a frown. “She was talking about quitting her job, she hadn’t given her notice yet but…” He shrugged. “I don’t know, everyone likes her, she’s sweet, caring and understanding to a fault most days. She’s perfect,” he murmured.

“They are getting ready to take her to the helicopter.” The cop looked at him and nodded. “Are you going or would you rather go and change and drive to the hospital.” He tucked his pen and pad into his pocket. “There will be more questions later, go and either get dressed and head to the hospital or go to force your way on the helicopter.” Although the cop had no doubt that Kris wouldn’t have to bully much. “I’ve called your brother, left him a message to call you.”

“I’m going with her and I don’t have my phone so I’d revise that message to him meeting me at the hospital,” Kris told him eyeing him for a moment. “I’ll be around when you have questions,” he said and headed for the helicopter at a light jog, catching up as they slid the gurney in and began securing it.

The cop pulled out his phone and left another message for Miklos before moving to where the woman laid before and looked back to the woman who had called in the hit and run.

The paramedic looked at Kris and frowned. “I don’t have time to placate you, so if I tell you to jump, you open the fucking door and jump, understand me?” He looked at Kris ensuring that he understood that his ride was a very tenuous one.

“If you tell me to jump I’m throwing you out,” Kris told him as he settled opposite the paramedic. “Don’t believe me…try me,” he suggested as he gently took Courtney’s hand in his. Kissing her fingers softly he propped his elbows on his knees and pressing her hand to his forehead as he bowed his head and prayed for her.

Running a central line with a very distraught wolf close was not as easy as it had sounded, the paramedic decided as he ran the line. Pulling back he spoke in the mic and watched the young woman’s vitals as she struggled to live, struggled to live for her mate.

You will live, it was his private litany to his mate as though through will alone he’d keep her from dying. Closing his eyes he just kept breathing even as panic set in. He knew she was in bad shape and that it was all his fault. If he hadn’t gone off like he had because of words she’d meant in jest she’d have been home with him and safe.

Eyes opening slightly she looked up at him. “Kris.” The mask on her face muffled the sound. “Hey.” She tightened her fingers on his hand only very slightly. “I hurt.” She gave the blaring obvious.

Lifting his head he stared at her. “Hey,” he whispered softly to her. “I know,” he breathed squeezing her fingers lightly. “We’ll work on getting you healed,” Kris promised.

“We are getting ready to land, hang on,” the paramedic said with a hard pat on Kris’s shoulder.

Looking to the hand on his shoulder and then up the arm to the man Kris growled softly, the sound near subvocal in nature. Turning his eyes back to his mate, he softened instantly. “We’re here, baby. The doctors will get you all fixed up with something to help with the pain.” Even if Kris had to threaten the men and women with bodily harm.

“Please don’t leave me?” she asked quietly. “Don’t leave me?” She squeezed his hand as tightly as she could, she was terrified that he would leave her, be forced to leave her. “I’m scared.” She was more than scared, she was terrified. She was afraid that whoever tried to kill her, would come back and finish the job.

Kissing her fingers gently he smiled for her. “I’m not going anywhere, love, let them try and move me,” he said rubbing his cheek over her knuckles. “I’m not going to let anything happen to you.” Again was the silent word that fell like a lead balloon between them.

“Okay, I’m going to sleep again, Kris because it hurts too much to stay awake, as much as I want to.” Her eyes fluttered closed as she whispered, “I love you, Kristof Farkas.”

“I love you, too, Courtney Warsaw,” he whispered kissing her hand once more.

“Mr. Farkas, we need to get her off here, the nurses and doctors are waiting but you need to move.”

Tightening his jaw he shifted and gently laid her hand down at her side allowing the doctors to pull her from the helicopter. Following at a safe distance he stayed with them, his eyes watching everything they did but he remained silent knowing they were doing what was necessary to keep her alive. He didn’t like their cold attitudes toward her but he kept his mouth shut knowing that if he said anything he’d get tossed, or rather, they’d try to toss him out.

It was nearly two hours later when she was stabilized and the doctor approached Kristof. “I am Dr. Brennan, you are her, boyfriend, fiancé, what?” It wasn’t meant to be a mean tone, it was meant to be a tone of question, pure and simple.

“She’s my mate,” he said softly his eyes on the too pale form under the white blanket of the bed. “How is she doctor?” he asked never taking his eyes from her.

“Considering that she was hit by a car she is doing really, really well,” he admitted. “She has two broken ribs, collarbone, arm and leg, she has a couple of broken teeth, but no internal bleeding so that is a plus.” He sighed. “She’s resting, we are going to move her up to a private suite as soon as it is ready. We are keeping her at least two days, depending on how that goes, possibly more.”

“Am I able to stay with her?” Kris asked the all-important question. He was trying to be nice, he was trying to remain polite and human. But if the doctor denied him access to his mate he was willing to throw that all out the window faster than the man could blink.

“It wouldn’t be my first choice.” The man rocked back on his heels. “But I can’t bar a wolf from their mate. I appreciate and love my life far too much for that.” He smiled and nodded. “I’m having her room equipped with two beds, so you can stay with her.”

“Thank you,” he said to the doctor with a tip of his head. “I’m going to sit with her while we wait for her room,” he murmured, not asking for permission. “Is she sedated?” Kris asked suddenly looking to the man.

“She is. I’m sorry but we need to keep her as still as possible for now because of the breaks. We will immobilize the arm and leg, but that will be tomorrow when we are sure there won’t be a need for metal pins.”

“That’s fine,” Kris said. “I just needed to know is all. Anything to do with her I need to know doctor, anything,” he said once more with feeling. Looking back to her Kris moved past the doctor and joined his mate. Taking her hand gently in his, he sat on the chair at her bedside and rubbed her skin to his cheek.

Many hours later in her room she stirred and was rewarded with pain, intense and immediate. Gasping she squeezed her eyes tightly. She felt him more than heard him and turned slightly to look at him, “Did someone get the plate of that truck that hit me?” Too bad the “joke” line was reality. “Hey you,” she added to the end with a smile.

“Hi,” he breathed softly reaching out to lightly stroke back her hair. He’d been sitting at her side ever since they’d moved them up to the private room. There was another bed, but it was too far from her for his comfort. Instead he’d sat in the chair and watched her or the nurses as they came in to note her stats on the chart or just generally check on her. “How are you feeling?” he asked as he hit the button for the nurse’s station to let them know she was awake.

“I hurt, I don’t think I like running alone.” Tears slid down her cheeks. “I really don’t like thinking that I was going to die, and yet have you upset with me, Kristof.” That was hurting her more than the physical pain. “I’m sorry for teasing you, I promise I won’t ever do it again.” Her lip quivered and fingers tightened on him slightly. “Just don’t push me from you like that again? Don’t shut me out? It hurts more than whatever happened to me, Kris.”

Nodding he moved closer to her laying his head lightly on her arm. “I’m sorry, love, at the time I didn’t realize you were teasing me. I just heard the words and my brain shut down. For a supposed genius I’m an absolute idiot, Courtney,” he whispered lifting his head. “By the time I clued in that you were kidding you were already out running and then the sirens and…” Shaking his head Kris touched her cheek. “I love you, Courtney, you are my heart and the very air I breathe. When I thought you were dying.” he stopped, swallowing hard. “I felt like I was dying inside, too.”

She tried to reach her other arm to him and sobbed back a cry of pain. “Kris.” She couldn’t understand why her arm and shoulder hurt so badly or why every breath she took was like a fire poker of pain. “Not dying, Kris, I’m with you forever, sweetheart.” She closed her eyes and panted. “But drugs would be beautiful right now, baby, please?”

“I buzzed the nurse, love, she’ll be here soon,” he promised, hearing footsteps approaching at a quick clip. “Your collarbone, some ribs and your arm are broken as well as your leg and, bad for you, good for your dentist, a couple teeth, too. You were lucky, baby, there was no internal damage so they only need to keep you long enough to ensure nothing develops and then we can go home.” If she wanted to after this.

She could only nod as the nurse sailed into the room. She listened to the woman and answered her questions, all without ever letting go of Kristof. When the woman smiled and patted the rail of the bed, she turned and pulled out a needle and injected it into the close off valve of the IV before telling her to get some sleep.

It hit her in a wave, it was as if the pain receded from her body from one side to the next, she could feel the way the blood flowed in her body and before allowing sleep to pull her away she looked to Kris. “I want to go home, Kris, but only with you. I only want to go where I belong.” Eyes closed as she began to breathe slowly. “With you,” was whispered so softly that without his wolf hearing, would have been lost.
