“Well,
as far as my uncle goes, the matter will stay out of the human courts.” He said. “This is an issue for the elders and the clan to handle. My guess is that once he is found guilty, they will leave the punishment up to the new alpha.”

“You, of course.” Emma replied.

“Of course.” Alexander said as he smiled.

“If that comes to pass, what will you do to him?”

Alexander put his hands behind his head and leaned back.

As he looked up towards the ceiling, he said, “Hmm, well, I’d be lying if I said that the temptation is
n’t strong in me to make an example of him. After all, showing any weakness as the new leader, it just wouldn’t be smart. On the other hand, I worry about my grandmother.”

Emma nodded and looked at him.

“Anyway, there’s a long way to go with Theodore. Time has a way of revealing the correct path, if one is open to seeing it but, enough about that for the moment. We need to talk about what’s next for us.”

“What do you mean?”

“Well, you still haven’t given me an answer Emma.” He said. “Are you going to make me get back down on my knees again?”

Emma shrugged. “Maybe…

“I will you know,
I’ll do it.” Alexander replied. “Right here, right now, I swear!”

“Okay.
” she whispered.

Alexander scrambled off the bed and onto the floor. He swung her body around to face him and looked up at her
.

“Emma Easterdale, will you marry me?”

And there it was.

It didn't
seem possible, not even her wildest of daydreams. But, as she looked down at the wolf on bent knee before her, it was clear that it was real. At last her moment had come. It was hers to seize and seize it she would.

Emma moved to the edge of the bed and as she did, he looked up at her.

“Alexander…” she said. “I need to…”

She paused. Confusion washed over his face.

“What?” he asked. “You need to what, Emma?”

“I need to pee.” She said.

“You little bitch!” he exclaimed as he leapt from the floor and pounced on her.

For several seconds, they rolled around on the bed. They laughed and hugged and kissed until at last, she came to rest in a seated position on top of him.

Out of breath, he panted and said, “So, what’s it gonna be, Emma?”

“Hmm, I dunno…
” she said.

Alexander rolled his eyes.

“Of course, a million times of course!” she exclaimed.

She reached over to him. They kissed when Emma pulled away without warning.

“Alexander, my uncle…” Emma said. “He will need to sanction our union or…”

Alexander smiled at her.

“Albondiel already has.” Alexander replied. “What? Do you think I would be crazy enough to do this without his approval? It was the alpha’s arrangement after all, wasn’t it?”

She la
ughed and replied, “Yes, it was.”

What are you doing with that?” Honey asked.

“The way things are at the moment… There’s no telling… I just might need it.”

He walked over towards Honey and sat down next to her. As he did, he placed the gun and bullets on the sofa table in front of them. He let out an exhausted breath and leaned his head against the back of the sofa.

“You must be beat.” Honey said.

With his eyes closed, Brock replied, “Yeah, I’m pretty wiped out.”

“Is there anything I can do to help?” she asked.

“No, you’ve been great Honey. Honestly, without you…” he said as his voice trailed off.

“…Without me?” she asked.

She turned towards him. His head remained against the couch, his eyes still closed. Honey looked at him in silence for a few moments. They’d kissed. What was she still worried about?

He leaned his head forward, opened his eyes and looked at her.

“Without you… I’d be lost.” He replied.

“Brock… I… what do you mean?”

He leaned forward, placed his elbows on his knees and his head between his hands.

“I mean, my whole world is basically crumbling all around me. It just seems like the harder I try to fix it, the more it disintegrates. It’s only a matter of time before the Mayor opens the hunt. Once that happens, there’s no telling what kind of chaos will unfold in Troubled Fork…”

Honey was dying inside. It was killing her to see him suffer like this. He was such a good man. He only wanted to protect the town he loved and all those that lived there. She scooted over towards him on the couch and reached up towards his face but he grabbed her hand just before she touched it…

“Honey, I… I cannot do this.” He said.

“What do you mean?” she replied. To say she was caught her off guard would be an understatement.

“With you. I just, I can’t…”

“What are you talking about? What do you mean Brock?”

“It’s… complicated.” He said as he averted her gaze.

“Look at me Brock. Don’t do this.”

“No… Honey, you don’t understand. It’s hard to explain…”

“No it isn’t, I think I know exactly what this is about…”

Furious, Honey stood up. “Take me home Brock –
now.
