The marquis looked up from his desk at his steward. “Solomon, send for my secretary at once. And tell the Comte de Marbéville I wish to see him in my office about a most serious matter. As of this moment, there will be no further contact between this household and the Salvagnacs. See that everyone understands that.”

Solomon bowed. “May I ask Monseigneur, about the reception which was planned for tomorrow. Madame la Marquise had invited several guests to celebrate the upcoming marriage. The garden and the main salon have already been decorated in preparation.”

“Cancel it at once and take everything down. I shall speak later to the marquise about it myself. Until the honor of Madame de Blaise has been satisfied, there will be no marriage at all. It’s time those damned upstarts understand who we are.”

Solomon bowed his head. With his back straight and head held high, he withdrew from the study to faithfully execute his master’s orders. The marquis turned and strode toward the large bay window which gave the best view of the estate’s immaculately kept gardens. The sky was clear and cloudless to the horizon, with not even a bird to mar the perfect backdrop of deep azure blue. But inside the estate at Caracol, a cold and bitter storm was brewing.
