Thus, my brother’s request met a firm ‘no’, and although he received—and will continue to receive—a generous gift at Christmastide, he was eventually obliged to make a few economies on his own.  This was not enough for Lady Celia, who ran away to Gretna Green with Lord Adrian Cathorn, the marquess’s son once intended—by Lord Davies’ mother—for Isolde.  Freddie was heartbroken for nearly a week.

The earl never bothered to ask for money.  He sold Three Stags instead, and the resulting income, combined with the newfound ability to tell Lord Freddie ‘no’, should allow my parents to be comfortable for a considerable time to come.

Aunt Sophie stayed in Florence for the rest of that year, sending us letters that were unflagging in their enthusiastic descriptions of that city.  When she returned Talfryn and I moved to Pencarrow, his estate in Cornwall, where we presently await the birth of our first child.

I cannot imagine being happier.
