Chapter 3

I cornered her against the wall with my arms beside her head as soon as I cleared the door. She looked up at me with a look of wonder mixed with fear on her face.

“What...” I stopped her mouth with mine. I had to know; no matter the result my mind was already made up, but I had to know.

I didn’t stop to think why it should matter, but just in case.

Fuck me. I let her go and stood there looking down at her. She wasn’t looking much better than I was feeling, and her eyes were glued to my lips.

“Was that your first kiss Dana?” and why the fuck did I care if she said yes or not? But there was no denying the feeling I got when she nodded her head yes.

“I know you’ve said that you didn’t know about the deal with Royce until this morning, but were you ever alone with him, or was he ever near you in the last six years?”

“Yes, but, I didn’t know what was going on. I did find it a bit strange in the beginning, but daddy explained that the two of them had gone into business together. I...” She stopped talking and looked like she was going to be sick.

“You what?”

“I just remembered; there was this one time when Mr. Davis tried to get me to sit on his knee. It felt weird so I didn’t stay there long.

And then there were all those times he’d ask me to turn so he could have a look at me, all those comments about how well I was growing.

Now that I think of it, he was always there whenever I came home. And sometimes he’d stay for dinner...”

“DANA.” I had to pull her in hard and hold her against my chest because the shakes were even worse than before.

“How could I have been so stupid, why didn’t I see what they were doing?”

Maybe because you were a kid! I held her until she stopped shaking and then put her away from me.

I don’t think it was appropriate to be having visions of fucking her on the kitchen table while she was reliving that shit.

Now I have the memory of the way she felt against me burned into my mind. As if this shit wasn’t going to be hard enough at it is.

I checked my watch and gave myself one last time to change my mind, no dice. I had no doubt that if Royce had been given the news that she was with me that he was already plotting some shit.

“I have to make a call and then you and I are gonna have a nice long talk.”

“About what?”

“Stuff.” I left her in the kitchen and went to my private home office for some privacy for the call. I was going to need a lot of shit done in a very short time so I was going to be calling in some favors.

Surprisingly, most of the town’s people were only too happy to help out the guys and I whenever we had a need.

When I’d lived at home I hadn’t ever noticed how much contempt the people held for Royce and his family, now it was glaringly obvious.

Because of his highhandedness and the way he’d taught his son to be just like him, the people had a lot of dislike for them.

I didn’t know too much about the son, Royce had shipped him off long ago to some fancy school somewhere in Europe. I didn’t even know people still did that shit.

Unlike his father I didn’t believe in going after anyone other than the person I had beef with, otherwise I would’ve ended his son a long time ago.

He’d been home for quite some time now, and one of the women he fucks is only too willing to set him up for my bullet, but that’s not the way I play. Though I keep my options open, you never know what might be in the future.

An hour and a half later after a fuck load of calls, I had everything I was going to need. Now I just had to take care of things on my end.

This shit was a delicate situation. I didn’t know all I needed to about everyone that was here on the ranch right now, as was evident by Bill the asshole, and I needed to keep what I had in mind a secret until I was ready to use it. If there were any spies here now I’d have to be extra careful.

I wasn’t too sure how I was going to pull it off, but after the lockdown, no one was allowed to come or go except me and my crew, so that should keep shit contained until I learned what I needed to know.

Apart from that, there wasn’t much else I could do. First things first, take care of Dana. At least I told myself that that’s what I was doing, but I think down deep inside I knew there was something else going on. I just choose not to look at that shit right now.

I was surprised when she came into my office just then with a plate in her hand.

“I made you lunch.” She was so shy and I kept wishing the bruises would hurry up and fade so I could see all of her. The promise of beauty was there yes, but I wanted to see it.

Back the fuck off Law; it’s not that kinda party. It shouldn’t matter what the fuck she looks like, or the fact that she nearly blew the top off my fucking head with that kiss. This shit wasn’t about that.

This was about my vengeance and nothing more, I won’t let it be. And when I had finally taken care of this fuckery, then and only then will I allow myself to think about my life, my future.

Until then I will do whatever it takes. There was no place in my life for a woman, no matter how pretty she was, or how much she made my cock ache.

“Thanks, you can put it down there.” She placed the plate down where I’d shown her and turned to leave.

“Dana, sit for a minute since you’re here.” She came back in and sat in the chair across from me.

I didn’t know where the fuck to start but she saved me the trouble. “Why did you kiss me?” she asked the question but I could see how much it had taken for her to get the words out.

“I needed to see what I was getting.” She gave me that female look that said she didn’t know what the fuck I was talking about, but if she was looking to me for help, she was shit outta luck because I didn’t know what the fuck either.

“I don’t think I understand.”

“That makes two of us; look I need to ask you some questions just answer them as honestly as you can okay.”

She nodded for me to continue and I chose my next words carefully. This was my first time at this particular rodeo and I had no idea what the fuck I was doing.

I had the end goal in mind, but knew there was a lot that could go wrong if I didn’t handle this right.

I didn’t like accepting the fact that I was willing to do anything to achieve my ends, I didn’t want to become the man that I was hunting, so I had to know before I made a move.

“Were you ever in love with someone, shit, that came out all wrong? Is there someone that you’re interested in, I don’t know, romantically?” that sounded better I guess.

“No, why?”

“I’m asking the questions, you’ll get your turn when I’m done. So there isn’t some guy somewhere who thinks he’s gonna have you?”

“No, I went to an all-girls boarding school, they were very strict. We weren’t allowed to fraternize with the opposite sex, and though I’m sure some of the other girls snuck out sometimes I never did.

Then when I came home on break, my dad would hardly let me out of the house, so there was never really any chance of that happening.”

“Good, um, so that’s taken care of, next question. You said earlier that you’d thought you were gonna go off to college after boarding school is that like a lifelong dream or something?”

What the fuck do you care? I don’t, but I cant be that guy who would just destroy someone else’s dreams without giving it some thought. My conscience can be a bit of a bitch.

“Not really no, I mean college was just the obvious next move after doing so well in school, but I can’t say that I had always had dreams of going off to college.

When I was growing up, before all this, I always thought I’d get married and have babies; that was my dream. Then after boarding school and I got to see how some of the other girls lived, I started dreaming too you know.”

“I see, but you won’t lose your fucking mind or anything like that if you don’t get to go right?”

“I don’t think so, and besides, there’s no money to go now anyway, so there’s no point in us even discussing it.”

That seems practical enough I guess, but I’ve never known a practical female a day in my life so I’m thinking she’s full of shit. Only time will tell.

“So you have no plans is that it?”

“Not that I know of, do you mind telling me what this is all about?”

“Do you have a favorite dress in that suitcase your mother brought you?”

Now she was thinking I’d lost my mind if the look she gave me was anything to go by. “I think so why?”

“You’re gonna need it later, you can go now.” I dismissed her by going back to what I was doing before she came in.

She left and I went back to sorting shit out to make sure I had my ass covered as well as my people.

If I make this move I will be bringing a shitload of heat down on my head and on this place. I’m not worried about myself but there are people here that might not want that kind of heat.

Fuck if I was going to ask permission to do what the fuck I want, but I don’t want any headaches. That’s why I was getting rid of anyone who might prove to be a pain in my ass before we go to lockdown.

I had to go make the final preparations for a fucking siege. In war you prepare for any and all contingencies and I could do no less.

I have to think outside the box and be two steps ahead of my enemy. So far I’ve been winning against him, even though he himself has remained out of reach.

But I have a feeling that this was going to be the catalyst. This shit could very well bring everything to a head.

Instead of asking any of the guys for their help I decided to do shit myself, but I was gonna need a little help from somewhere.

I found her in her room going through her clothes. “Come with me.” She dropped her dress and followed me out the door without a word. I like that.

I led her to the storage room and told her what I wanted. “I don’t know how long we might have to be here so I need to make sure my people can eat.

You like to cook so that means you know what the fuck you need to cook...what is it?” she’d made a face at me.

“Must you swear with every other breath?”

“Fuck yes, now as I was saying, I need you to tell me what I need to fill these shelves for at least a six months.”

“A six months, what...”

“Does what you’re about to ask me have anything to do with cooking?”

“Well no, but...”

“I think I told you already about asking me about my shit, now I need that list in half an hour can you do that for me?”

“Yes, I guess so, but first I’d need to know how many people we’re talking about.”

“No need to get all pissy.” She was a huffy little thing when she wanted to be.

I gave her the number and then stayed with her while she went through the stuff and wrote on the little clipboard we kept there.

She gave me a list as long as my arm and I thanked her before heading out to pass it off to a couple guys to go collect the stuff. “Don’t let anyone see you getting this shit, I don’t want people whispering about us stocking up for Armageddon or some fuck.

You better go to Cooperstown to fill this one and don’t come back without everything on that list.”

“What difference does it make? You sacked the last decent cook we had.”

“You idiots would eat anything, that bitch couldn’t cook worth shit.” They laughed at that as I walked away.

I went and found Melissa to get her help on one last thing. I can’t believe I was actually thinking about this shit in the middle of all this chaos, but it was the least I could do.

She was only too glad to help and would’ve talked my ear off if I hadn’t reminded her that time was a-wasting and I had shit to do.

I didn’t have to fill her in on too much since my brother tells her every damn thing, unless it’s something I specifically asks him not to, which I don’t do, because I understand that she is his solace. He loses that he’d become just like me. A hard bitter shell! I wasn’t about to let that happen.

I headed back to the house to put the last pieces together. “You find that pretty dress of yours? You have an hour to get ready.” I was standing in the door to her room with my arms folded, legs braced; waiting for her reaction.

“Ready for what?”

“Your wedding.”
