ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

Since I usually create a book as I’m writing it, without really knowing what will happen until it’s happening, this book was particularly challenging to write, and I feel the need to acknowledge accordingly.

First, thank you to all the readers of
Every Day
who have shared their reactions with me. I think it’s very safe to say that without your meaningful enthusiasm, the story would have ended there.

As always, I want to thank my friends, family, and fellow YA authors for their support. I am always tempted to attempt a full list to back up this acknowledgment, but live too much in fear that I’ll inadvertently forget someone. So instead I will limit myself to the people who have actually shared a house, room, car ride, and/or coffee shop with me as I’ve drafted this book: my parents, Libba Bray, Zachary Clark, Nathan Durfee, Nick Eliopulos, Andrew Harwell, Billy Merrell, Stephanie Perkins, Jennifer E. Smith, Nova Ren Suma, Chris Van Etten, and Justin Weinberger. Joel Pavelski has the distinction of having been with me in Montreal when I began the book and then, a year later, with me in Montreal when I neared finishing it. Thanks, too, to Rainbow Rowell, for the conversation that led to the title, and for conversations in general. And to Gayle Forman, for being my reference point in this particular literary endeavor of shifting perspectives while sticking to the same story. Also, for conversations in general.

This book also wouldn’t exist without the accidental suggestion and very deliberate support of everyone at Random House Children’s Books. Thank you especially to Nancy Hinkel (more about her in a sec), Stephen Brown, Julia Maguire, Mary McCue, Adrienne Waintraub, Lisa Nadel, Laura Antonacci, Barbara Marcus, and everyone (I mean, everyone) in the sales, marketing, publicity, production, manufacturing, and legal departments.

Thank you also to Bill Clegg and Chris Clemens, for guardian angelhood. And to Stella Paskins, Maggie Eckel, and everyone at Egmont UK; to Penny Hueston, Michael Heyward, Rebecca Starford, and everyone at Text Publishing; and to all the foreign-language publishers and translators who’ve supported
Every Day
in such an astonishingly global way.

As for Nancy
…I’ll linger here, your words in my margins, dear, and sing till dawn a song of you and me and what and why. The what being the book in your hands, and the why being the way that you care.
