It was Monday, and Michael had gotten up and left my apartment without waking me.
I was still sleeping far more than normal, but hopefully that would subside soon enough. There were much better things I could be doing with my nights than sleeping.

“You’re back at work?” Michael asked as I came into the precinct.
“I thought you had another four days of leave.”

“I just wanted to sign up for the exam.
The lieutenant said they were posting the sheet this afternoon for the next test date.” I smiled at him. “You’re right, I don’t want to be on the front lines manhandling crooks and responding to calls.”

“Well
, if you need a study buddy,” his eyes danced playfully, “I could be persuaded, for a price.”

“Oh really?”

“Uh-huh.”
He leaned forward to whisper something in my ear, and Detective Preston’s voice caught us both by surprise.

“Riley,” she hissed, “not in the office.
Holowitz thinks I slept my way to the top, you don’t want the same for your current girlfriend, now do you?” I turned to her surprised. “No hard feelings, Sarcone,” she said to me. “You’ve found yourself a good guy. Try to hang on to him.” I saw regret pass over her face before she walked away.

“What was that about?” I whispered to Michael.

“I’ll tell you one of these days,” he insisted. “Now go sign up for the exam and get out of here. You don’t want them to try to make you go out on tour do you?”

“Fine.”

After signing the sheet, and running into a couple of friends who asked how I was, I went back to Michael’s desk.
He was on the phone, and I ran my hand along his shoulder as my silent way of saying goodbye. He covered the mouthpiece and said, “I’ll see you tomorrow?”

“Absolutely.
Be careful. This job’s dangerous.”

He smiled lecherously.
“So is my girlfriend.”
