Candy covered a grin as Damien hopped on one foot assessing the damage. Dirk made no pretense of being polite and laughed.

“Serves you right for wearing three-hundred-dollar shoes in a forest.”

“Why here and not Hawaii, Dirk, huh?” Damien demanded. “You know I hate the woods.”

“Candy likes it here and I want her well-guarded. I trust you the most. Although, if you’re attacked by spiders, bugs or killer leeches, no doubt it will be Candy who saves your sorry ass.”

“Candy, have mercy, can’t we go home now—the Bahamas, Paris, New York? I’ve been suffering for six
whole
days,” Damien whined, while scraping at his shoe with a stick.

“I think it’s Dirk and I who’ve been suffering,” Candy retorted. Not a day passed when Damien hadn’t complained about something, until Candy was tempted to order her own hit. This was decidedly the last time she ever wanted to be in the woods with her brother-in-law.

“Hey. What’s that damned possum got?” Damien grouched distracted, his eyes narrowed as the furry creature scooted around the cabin, dragging something.

“That’s a raccoon,” Dirk said dryly, “and by the looks of it, your Armani shirt is about to be used for a nest.”

“Not fucking likely,” Damien snarled through clenched teeth and raced around the corner in hot pursuit of the quick footed creature.

This time Candy did laugh. “I’ve never seen so many bad things happen to one man in such a quiet environment,” she said thoughtfully, then paused. “You don’t suppose Damien will hurt the animal do you?”

“If it lets him live, I’d be surprised.”

“I guess he’s lucky he’s unarmed,” Candy mused.

“Who? Damien or the raccoon?”

“I suppose it’s time to take pity on your brother and release him back into civilization. I don’t think nature can take much more of him,” Candy said resigned. Her eyes then widened as Damien raced around the corner, shirt in hand raised high in victory, now being chased by the irate raccoon.

Quick
, start the car,
start the car!”
he howled as he raced by.

“That’s one good thing about my little brother, he sure is fast,” Dirk commented.

“Do you think it’ll catch him?” Candy asked with unveiled concern.

“Maybe.” Sighing, Dirk rose and went into the cabin. When he emerged, he threw a package of opened marshmallows on the ground as Damien raced wildly by, the raccoon steadily gaining.

“A little help,” Damien yelled, puffing heavily. He scooted around the doe who snorted with annoyance when he accidently banged into her, almost felling them.

“His endurance sucks,” Dirk commented.

“Don’t you think we should tell him the raccoon has stopped chasing him, but he should watch out for the deer?” Candy asked, as Damien fled into the woods, jumping logs and ducking branches, now followed by the annoyed doe.

“She won’t hurt him; she has a great deal of patience with him. She’ll tree him like last time, or rip the seat out of his pants. Besides, I’m a little busy, he can wait,” Dirk said, smiling.

“Busy doing what?” Candy asked, knowing that smoldering look.

“Kissing my pregnant wife,” Dirk said. His mouth captured hers in a heated kiss while pulling her close.

Dirk was right, Damien could wait.
