Chapter One
Emily Hensley

Emily Hensley listened as her colleagues murmured
something she couldn’t quite understand. Alert, her ears picked up the
conversation in the reception area.

“Did you know Mr. Williams kicked her
secretary out last week?” Veronica, one of the receptionists gossiped. With her
red-dyed hair, Emily thought Veronica’s head was on fire.

“Really? It’s true then. I heard about that
the other day, but I didn’t know it was actually true. I wonder what Michelle
did for her to be kicked out?” the other receptionist, Martha, wondered.

Emily stepped closer. Curious about the
topic, she stared at the file in her hands to pretend she was reading.

“She must have lured him at some stage.”
Veronica paused and looked around. “Don’t tell anyone, okay. I think he’s gay.
I’ve never seen him with anyone before.”

“Hey, don’t say that! He’s a hunky fellow,
I’m sure he has someone to spend the night with. We never know, he might
actually be seeing someone in this building–”

“Could it be you?” Veronica jumped in.

Martha blushed. “Um… don’t you think I’m
too old for him?”

“Oh, darling, for goodness sake! He’s like
your child. You’re a menopause now,” Veronica teased, annoying her best friend.

Emily giggled a little. Veronica’s joke
played the string of Emily’s laughter, making her want to burst out laughing.
If it wasn’t too rude to do so, she would’ve done so without worries.

In shared wonder of what Emily was doing,
Veronica and Martha brought their gazes at her. Emily couldn’t paint their sour
expressions. By their fierce looks, she knew she put herself in trouble. Big
time.

“What are you doing here, white lady?”
Martha attacked.

White lady? How could you say that to
me?!
Yep. Emily hated being called ‘white lady’
though the truth screamed it aloud. Her pale skin turned her into an undercook
bread. And everyone she came across with couldn’t help but
compliment
her skin color.

Emily held her chin up. “I need you to send
this file to Mr. Edward. Before then, please check that everything is in
there–”

“Who told you we’re gonna do this?”
Veronica stood up.

A look of terror registered across Emily’s
face. “M-Michele isn’t here, so no one is gonna do it…”

Martha buried her hands on her hips. “Well,
you go and do it. We’re seniors over you, so you have no rights to tell us what
to do!”

“That’s right,” Veronica second the
motioned.

All of a sudden, Emily’s curiosity to find
out more about what happened to Michelle vanished into a vapour of uncertainty.
Her mind screamed for revenge but her heart disagreed. She knew being a smart
ass wouldn’t serve as a good asset. Not to mention she just arrived in this
company one-and-a-half years ago. Making friends was the way to go.

“Okay. Um… I’ll probably do it myself.
Thanks, though!” Then, she turned around and began to depart their presence.

“Emily.” A pitchy and rather irritating
voice restrained her from walking any farther. The sound of the heels clicking
on the marble floors assured Emily, it was
her
. Again.

Turning around, she watched Melody, the
head manager, approached with her five-inched Prada heels hammering the floor
down, an extravagant entourage for her arrival.

“What are you doing with that file? I
thought it’s already been dispatched?” Melody queried.

Emily couldn’t dare to look at Veronica and
Martha. To abolish the awkward atmosphere building up, she forced a smile on
her face. “I’ve been so busy lately, so I’ve forgotten to dispatch it sooner.
But, I’m gonna go to the post office and send it through there to Mr. Edward.”

Melody narrowed her eyes. “You’re not
supposed to be doing that. It’s not your job. Give it to me.” She reached out
her hand for the file.

“It’s okay. I can do it myself. It’s not
that hard,” she smiled, not wanting to make a huge fuss out of a simple matter.
By experience, she knew a small volcano could erupt tons of lava. Here.

“Give it to me…”

“Alright…” After a decade of seconds of
convincing, Emily finally handed the file over.

Melody grabbed the file and looked through
it, ensuring everything is in order and as expected. “Well, it seems you’ve
done a good job sorting it out. You’ll be a good fit for the job I have in
mind…” she grinned, as if she had an evil plan ahead.

Job? What job? I’ve already got one…

Emily’s eyes followed Melody as she slumped
the file on the reception bench. “Either one of you, make sure this file gets
to Mr. Edward immediately. If possible, do it now,” she austerely commanded, as
if she was the owner of this company.

Emily held her breath as Melody turned
around so quickly that even the speed of light couldn’t compete. “Alright,
Emily… Come with me.”

So she did.

As they marched away, Emily could sense
Martha and Veronica were murmuring among themselves. Perhaps, they were
plotting an evil plan to kick her ass out of this company. As if it was going
to happen. Melody had Emily’s back. So better luck next time old bitches!

Could no longer hold her curiosity back,
Emily took a brave breath and turned to Melody. She knew Melody might not spoil
it, but still she’d risk it. “Melody.”

“Yes?”

“About the job, what is it exactly?”
Through the startling of her voice, she knew Melody could sense her nerves.

Melody kept on walking. “You’ll see it. I’m
sure you’re gonna like it. But promise me, when he asks you anything just be
honest. Just be you and act as normal. Don’t show you're nervous, or otherwise,
you’d lose the job. You don’t want to let go of a $50.oo per hour rate, do
you?”

Fifty dollars per hour? Wow. That’s a
lot of money…

Emily swallowed at what Melody had said.
“Alright. I’ll do my best and do as you say.”

They turned left into a narrow hallway.
“Good, girl. I know he’s gonna like you,” she whispered under her breath,
foreseeing the future.

As they journeyed to the very top of this
sixty-storey building, Emily couldn’t help but tremble at what was about to
come. She knew Melody meant her good, but her scepticism kept telling her
something wasn’t quite right.

In the elevator, while Melody was too busy
touching up, Emily’s knees quaked as if they were about to snap from the
pressure of the increasing height. She looked through the window glass to
divert her fear, but the depressing traffic in New York increased her anxiety
even more.

Calm down, Emily… You’re gonna be fine.
Just be yourself and relax. That’s it. Relax.

The elevator screamed. Then, it stopped at
the 60th floor.

“We’re here.” Melody pouched her lips and
made a popping noise as she released them.

“Right. Wish me luck,” she smiled,
reluctant to have survived the ride up here.

Melody stepped forward first, and Emily
followed. As they made their way from the elevator to the only door in this
storey, the elevator slammed shut. Emily shivered.

Then, she watched as Melody knocked on the
door…
