The brush of his hands over my shoulders and down my back felt incredible. Kevin kissed me, so tender it made my eyes sting. We couldn’t have tears after first-time sex. No, no. That was the kind of shit that made men lose their shit, freak out, and run for the nearest available exit. So I leaned back on my hands to study his ink as a distraction.

His left arm was almost completely covered, starting at the middle of his forearm, stretching up his bicep and over his shoulder. It was excellent work, almost…familiar.

He moved his arm aside so I could see the tattoo on his ribcage. My breath caught, and I was pretty damn sure my heart stopped for a second or five.

I recognized the drawing instantly because it was mine.

“Kevin.” I swallowed hard and glanced up at him. He looked a tad bit guilty. “Where did you get that tattoo?”

My fingers gravitated toward it, possessively I suppose. It was after all, my art on his body. Well, not really art per se. It was a picture of Porky Pig on a spit, being roasted over a roaring fire while Bugs Bunny reclined against a nearby tree, a cookbook open in his hands. I’d drawn it one day when I was hanging out in Brian’s shop downtown. One guess who I had on the brain while I drew.

“Elle, look at me.” When I did, his hand cupped my cheek. “Your brother has done most of my work the last few years. He’s a phenomenal artist, and he’s become a good friend of mine.” I think I nodded in agreement. “You come up a lot during our conversations.”

“We’re very close.”

Kevin smiled softly. “I can tell.”

“But he’s never said anything to me about knowing you.”

“He knows I like my privacy. Since the restaurant has become so popular and I do those weekly segments for
Wake Up Atlanta
, I don’t have a lot of it left.”

“I see,” I mumbled, still in a weird state of confusion.

“A few months ago I stopped by, mostly to browse and just shoot the breeze, and I saw your drawing taped to his wall. It was perfect for me. It’s clever and funny, and I wanted it right then. When he told me you drew it, I had to know even more about you. Brian showed me some of your pictures. I haven’t stopped thinking about you since that day.”

The air I’d trapped in my lungs started to burn. I let it out in a slow sigh and rubbed my temples. “I’m still confused. Are you saying this”—I gestured to the room—“was all a setup? You, Brian, and Heather orchestrated this whole thing?”

He nodded, biting his lip to try and hold back a smile. A smug one, no doubt. “Not the cooking classes for charity. I really do that every year. The timing just fell perfectly for me to reserve a spot in hopes that you’d fill it.”

I couldn’t take much more. My insides had turned into something gooey and warm, and I was deathly afraid that any minute now I was going to wake up in my bed, alone, with an empty bottle of Tequila nearby and the TiVo paused on Kevin’s face.

“What if I had said no?”

“Heather guaranteed Brian she could make it so you wouldn’t.”

“Wait until I get my hands on her.” I was kidding of course. I was going to give her a big sloppy kiss and a rather large gift certificate to that kitchen store she was always blathering on about. Crate and Tub or something, I forget. “Why not get my phone number and simply ask me out on a date?”

Kevin kissed me, shutting me up, making me lose my train of thought entirely. “You talk too much.”

I feigned shock. “Who me?”

“Come home with me. We’ll open a nice bottle of wine, and I’ll cook you an amazing dinner.”

I slid my arms around his neck, whispered against his lips, “As long as it’s not artichokes.”
