At that moment, Chloe heard a ding. The sound of an elevator coming up.

Heart pounding in her chest, she nearly held her breath. Michael was coming. She could feel him. With all of her being, it was the most joyous and terrifying moment she had ever known.

“Ah,” Abel said. “There we are.”

Michael stepped out into the empty office space, and he felt Chloe long before he saw her. He reached out to her telepathically.

My darling, I am here, and this is about to be over. Whatever you hear, look away.

When he reached Chloe, she was lying on the middle of the floor, facing the windows, her back to him. Abel stood over her, legs apart, hands at his sides.

“Long time no see,” Abel said. “I bent you don’t remember me. Last time we saw each other, I was strapped to a gurney in Emerson’s lab. If you can even call it that. For me, it was a torture chamber.”

“I can tell you that I apologize for what you went through. I have the serum.”

“Oh,” Abel said, nudging Chloe’s hip with his foot. “Imagine that. He must love you after all.”

“I do,” Michael said. “Something you’ve got no clue about.”

“Let’s get to business then. I want to see what you have for me.”

Moving closer, Michael showed him a metal case with a filled syringe inside.

Abel laughed. “So that’s what the serum looks like these days. Blue. What he gave me wasn’t even the same color.”  His twisted mouth drooled in anticipation. “Give me.”

“Yes. I’ll do the honors.”

Michael waited as Abel pulled up his sleeves. His skin was riddled with horrible scars, hardened red tissue in some places, dark and blue in others. Finding the softest spot he could, Michael gave the injection, praying that the needle wouldn’t break. There had only been time enough for Emerson to synthesize one batch.

“Oh, yes,” Abel said. “I feel it in my veins now. Will it heal my scars too, do you think?’

“I wouldn’t know,” he said softly. In truth, he didn’t think it would. Michael still retained a few scars from his human existence, and those were minor. He couldn’t imagine that any serum would take away such serious damage. And there wouldn’t be time to find it out.

Abel’s hands went to his throat, and his skin began to sizzle. Lunging forward, realizing what was happening to him, he lunged toward Michael. Falling back, Michael pulled out a gun and shot him.

Abel’s body, already on fire, was blown backwards against the glass.

Chloe heard the screaming, the sound of glass breaking as Abel fell through. But she saw nothing, because she kept her eyes closed.

By the time what was left reached the ground, only ashes remained.

After all that happened, Michael urged Chloe to take some time off. She took his advice, going back to her mother’s hometown to visit her family. Two weeks later she was back. He wrapped his arms around her, holding tight. Having only drank from her once, his ability to read her had begun to wane. And as he looked down into her dark eyes, he wished that he knew what her feelings were. They had dinner and wine in his penthouse, and in a lull during the conversation, she looked up to meet his eyes.

“I did a lot of thinking,” she said softly. “There are many reasons that I could take your offer to become a vampire. Immortality. Strength. The ability to never be weak or helpless again. Wealth. But of all those things,” she said. “The best reason is just because I love you. So I want you to make me. Tonight.”

Michael kissed her. Chloe was shivering, her eyes filling with tears. When he parted from her he saw that she smiled at him.

“It’s scary, but so is every brave thing you’ll ever do, this by far being the bravest,” he told her. “I promise to love you, and to give you everything in the world.”

“I love you too,” she said, holding him. She let her fingers twine through his hair, letting her neck bend languidly towards him.

And then, he bit her.
