“Grilled cheese sammiches.” Jett tilted his head to one side with an air of mischief. “Hasani wasn’t here, so I made us something. Um…and there’s rice cakes. The package said they were organic, so if you don’t approve of my cooking, you can help yourself.”

“You made me breakfast?” Goldie should spank Jett more often. Being ordered around seemed to make him eager to please. Not that Goldie wanted to alter the rebellious man he knew, but he felt a special thrill when Jett was thoughtful.

Grinning, he slipped off the table. From the closet, Goldie grabbed a long, white silk skirt that felt luxurious and breezy when he wore it onto the patio. Cheese wasn’t on his diet, but a few extra minutes on the elliptical wouldn’t kill him. Especially when this was from Jett.

Goldie claimed a seat and took a bite. “This is good. What kind of cheese is it?” “Oh, uh, it’s a blend, I guess? Havarti, cheddar, and Monterey jack slices on buttered ‘artisan multigrain.’ I just kinda sniffed the cheeses, decided what smelled good together, and tossed it in a skillet.” Jett ducked his head; the wind toyed with strands of his hair.

“So I talked to Cole.” Instead of meeting Goldie’s eyes, Jett stared at the landscape. “Grace is gonna take him to have the test today.”
Goldie finished his sandwich while he waited for Jett to say something else. Though his expression hadn’t changed, the fact Jett brought up the topic meant he wanted to talk about it. He just didn’t know how.

Neither did Goldie.
That there had been no shouting or commotion meant it went well. That Jett was the one who sent Cole in the end was also significant. Goldie could’ve sent him the day he’d arrived, but he hadn’t. Cole would’ve been forced on Jett even more than he already was.
No, the move had to come from Jett. This way, Jett had admitted the possibility.

Didn’t mean that he
liked
the possibility or approved of Cole, but it was progress. Goldie broke the rice cake, which he assumed to be a nod to healthy food. It wasn’t, but now wasn’t the time for a nutritional lecture. Besides, he was sure Jett knew by now rice wasn’t a vegetable.
“I’m really proud of you.”

Those weren’t the words that Goldie had intended to say. He’d intended to ask how Jett felt about being a father or what he thought about Cole. The words were true, but Goldie worried that he might sound too patronizing.

“Thanks.” Jett sounded almost defeated, with none of his usual fire. There was no rebellion, no note of ironic amusement. “I think he’s mine. He said Linda wanted a baby, and her husband wouldn’t believe it was him and not her. She thought I was a talented kid who’d get out of town sooner than later and decided to borrow my genes.”

Then Jett sat straight, shoulders squared and chin jutted stubbornly. “Think I’m a little pissed off, actually. I mean, I get why she did what she did, and fair enough, I banged her a few times without a condom, and that’s what happens. Ha, it’s like the Fair Use law. I’m not pissed about that.”

Jett turned his gaze on Goldie, staring with an openness that tugged at his heart. It had been a long time since Jett had given him a look that seemed to welcome Goldie to ask questions.

“Guess I missed a lot. Don’t think I’ll ever be a dad, y’know?” Jett sounded unsteady. “I can pay for college and give him somewhere to sleep Christmas break, but I’m not gonna be Daddy, even if he is my spit and image. I feel kinda cheated. I know that’s stupid, but I wish I’d known sooner. It hurts that she didn’t think I’d care. I’d have been a shitty dad, I know, but I’d have cared like all fuck.”

Jett looked on the verge of tears before he returned his gaze to the horizon and hid behind his hair. The breeze softened and blurred the edges of his plaintive words. “I don’t have any blood anymore. Don’t have Jack-o and the boys. Would’ve been nice to know this kid before he decided to hate me like the rest of the world does.”

The words were devastating. For both of them. Goldie had tried to block out the anguish when Jett said he missed his band and New York the night before. It could have been a heat-of-the-moment, rash thing to say.

But he’d said it again. It wasn’t a fluke or a mood. Worse yet, he didn’t see Goldie as his blood.
Goldie took a moment to find his voice. “I don’t think it’s stupid to feel cheated. And I don’t think Cole hates you. Not really. He’s angry with his dad for abandoning him. And with life. He has a right to be. That’s a nasty way to find out you aren’t who you thought you were.”
Goldie set down the rice cake. “If you miss your band so much, you should talk to them. Go back to New York.”
Jett shook his head and reached for Goldie’s hand, gripping it tightly. After a moment, Jett turned his whole torso to face Goldie and met his gaze with red-rimmed eyes.
“I don’t miss them. I miss being somebody. Cole kept asking, ‘Why you?’ And I couldn’t tell him. I can’t think of a goddamn thing that makes me so special I deserve this life.”
Jett’s Adam’s apple bobbed as he swallowed hard. The veins stood out in his big hands and at his temples. He looked frustrated in the angry way he assumed when he was scared, like it would be so terrible for anyone to know he got frightened.

“The last time I remember really feeling like I mattered was when we were on stage together. You’re this amazing solo artist, but I just don’t have that in me. It gets more obvious every day. I really thought I could do it too, but I can’t. I’m getting old, Billy. I’m losing relevance.”

Goldie squeezed Jett’s hand, then reached out to caress the side of his face. “No, you’re not. I’m dragging my feet on my solo project because I don’t want to do it without you. I used to be so happy out there alone. But now I miss you. I miss singing with you, playing with you. You are so relevant. Not in the same way now, but you don’t want to be like those sad old bands who play the quote unquote smaller venues. You’ve evolved. You’re like a shark, right? Gotta keep moving forward. Sometimes it takes time to get people to adapt to where you should be.”

Jett closed his eyes and inhaled through his nose. He clamped his fingers on Goldie’s hand. “I can’t be a sellout. I can’t. I’d rather die. I’d rather just crash my bike into a fucking telephone pole and end it.”

As if to hold back a rant, Jett clenched his jaw. Then he exhaled slowly and opened his eyes. He toyed with his lip ring as he did when he was freaking out inside, rolled his eyes, and laughed. “So it’s safe to say there’s no chance either of us is going to be fucking happy if we keep doing this dumb-ass separate-careers thing? ’Cause I’m terrified of being a sellout, but like, I dunno. We don’t have to be fucking Hall and Oates to sing together, right?”

Goldie blinked. “Well, no, of course not. But do you think I’m a sellout? Did you think our tour was about being a sellout?”
“No! You’re strong enough to stand alone as an artist and do your thing and realize your vision and communicate your message. But I’m not. I just get lost any time I step out of the spotlight. I feed on that. On my own, I’m just…” Jett looked more embarrassed than Goldie’d ever seen him. “I’m club dates and rock festivals. You’re fucking stadiums and sold-out world tours. I get backstage and I fade, but you just glow and glow and glow. That’s why you’re fucking Goldie.”

Goldie sat forward to make sure that Jett heard him and understood. “You’ve added dimension to my music, Jett. You’ve shown me what love is, so I have more depth that way, but also musically, you inspire me. I wrote some songs, and I sound like a whiny teenager. But the ones I like are filled with this raw sexuality that I didn’t feel or understand before. And that’s you. You’re the raw power. You don’t fade. You’re timeless.
That’s
why ‘you.’ You didn’t let the bastards get you down. You looked Kansas in the eye and said, ‘Fuck you.’ I’m Goldie because I was packaged slickly. I gave it my all, and maybe that was enough at the time. It’s not enough now. I need you to be you so that I can be me.”

Jett hurled himself at Goldie’s feet with a choked sound and wrapped his arms around his waist. He pressed his face hard against Goldie’s stomach. “Okay. So. The Goldie and Jett Variety Show is a go?”

Goldie traced his fingers through Jett’s hair, smiling at the bits of gray and the idea of showing up in cheesy pantsuits. “Only if you promise to help me work on my album and make my sad songs less dreary.”

He pressed his lips together. Jett had been smoking pot, and usually he did that in the practice room. “Did you already help yourself to a preview?”
Jett kissed Goldie’s belly for an excuse to hide his face as he nodded. Goldie could feel the smile against his bare stomach.
“You need me. I inspire you.”
“You are my muse, Mr. Black. There’s no one in the world who doubts that.” Goldie squeezed Jett and kissed the top of his head. “You’re my world, Jett. All the success and fame means nothing when I think about having to go on tour without you. You make me better. Bolder. I have the stitches to prove it.”

“Oh God.” Jett sighed. He sat on his heels and gazed up, gripping Goldie’s hips. “Is it too early in the day to say, ‘Take me now, you stud’? ’Cause you’re dreamy, Mr. Goldean.”

Jett started to say something else, then shut his mouth so fast his teeth clacked. “No, it’s never too early.” Goldie felt sexy and mischievous. He wondered what Jett was going to say next. Testing his limits and taking cues from the night before, Goldie slipped a hand between them, found Jett’s nipple, and squeezed.
Jett gasped and gave Goldie a curious look, but he rose onto his knees and pushed out his bare chest for more. There was a calculating look in his eye, like he’d guessed what game they were going to play and wasn’t opposed. He tightened his hands on Goldie’s hips, pulling them forward until he was perched on the edge of his chair.
The wind blew Goldie’s skirt up to his knee. He pulled it the rest of the way to his waist. He glanced at the horizon as if a photographer would poke his head up and shoot pictures. It felt so naughty to be outside with his cock exposed and hard.
Goldie twisted Jett’s nipple. “You like that? You think if you stay home with me all day I’m just going to fuck you for twelve hours? Keep you full of my cum? Is that what you need?”
Jett’s sunny smile seemed to belong to someone else. With all the brooding and scowling Jett usually did, it seemed like an expression transplanted from the beginning of their relationship, when things had been easy and they’d cared about nothing but spending time together.
He ducked his head to mouth Goldie’s cock, kissing the tip. “I felt so real yesterday, like you had hold of my heart. I need that from you. I wanna be close like that, that intense, right on the edge.”
The words sent a thrill through Goldie’s body similar to the fire he possessed on stage, dancing, performing, where he was the master. He knew what needed to be done and when. That gave him room to read the crowd and give them what they needed, like an experienced Dom.

He’d definitely had enough practice at fucking. Now Goldie could make it his. Had he really spent all that time repressing himself?
The sex had always been hot, but he'd misread his audience.

“I want that too.” Goldie reclined until his shoulder blades met the chair back. Then he grabbed his shaft and pressed the tip of his cock against Jett’s chest. “I want you to gag yourself on my cock.”

Jett braced his hands on Goldie’s thighs and lowered his head. He put on a show, gazing at Goldie as he rubbed his cheek against the hard cock. Lust glimmered in those eyes, and as Jett sucked Goldie’s cock into his mouth, he made a soft, satisfied sound that made clear how willing he was to obey.

“Yes, that’s it. Show me. I want you to perform for me.” Goldie blushed, but he didn’t think Jett could see. He would never be one of the merciless sadists in the pornos he watched, but he’d spent most of his life faking it until he made it.

When they were first together, Goldie had been afraid Jett would reject him when faced with his cock. Then Jett gave Goldie his first blowjob. It had been Jett’s idea, and he’d loved it. How could he have missed for so long Jett’s eagerness to fulfill Goldie’s fantasies?

Goldie shifted his hips as Jett sucked him, forcing his length down Jett’s throat. With one hand, Goldie pushed aside Jett’s cascading hair to watch.

From around Goldie’s shaft, Jett grinned and held eye contact as he dug his nails into Goldie’s thighs. He reached up to dip two fingertips into Goldie’s mouth before reaching inside the back of his jeans to rub his own hole. As Goldie’s cock slid between his lips, Jett kept that sultry gaze fixed on his face. “Mmm, you want to be fucked, don’t you?” Goldie groaned at how hot and wet Jett’s mouth felt around him. He loved the soft slurping and sucking noises and the way that those lips turned inward as Jett devoured Goldie’s cock. ”Didn’t get enough of me last night? Good. I didn’t get enough of you either.”

Pulling Jett’s head back by the hair, Goldie ordered, “Turn around. Touch that greedy hole.”
Jett gave Goldie a swollen-lipped smile and stood. His erection distended his loose, ripped jeans, the dark crown peeking above the nonexistent waistband. He swayed his hips as he unzipped. His hard cock sprang from the open fly.
As Goldie stared, Jett hooked his thumbs in the pockets and slid the denim down his legs. He turned slowly as he revealed his body, stepped out of the puddled fabric at his feet, and then climbed onto the table with his ass facing Goldie.
Before there was time to process it, Jett spread his cheeks, flashing Goldie with his little red pucker before leaning forward and smacking his ass until it was rosy. Jett’s handprint stood out against the olive skin, reminding Goldie of how his had looked there the night before.
A moment later, Jett’s fingers slid to center, and he slowly penetrated his own asshole one finger at a time.

There was no one on the planet sexier than Jett Black. No one. The only thing that might be sexier than Jett naked on a table fingering himself was Jett with a rosy, warm ass fingering himself.

Unable to resist, Goldie stood and caressed Jett’s cheeks. He even bent down to bite them. “You are such a nasty boy.” Goldie traced his nails over Jett’s skin, then smacked him hard. “You’re being too sexy, you know. I’m going to have to pound you hard if you keep this up.”

Goldie walked around the table to face Jett. Goldie’s erection jutted from his hips, red and hot, draped in the white silk of his hiked skirt. He stepped closer to Jett, holding it by the shaft, and slapped his cheek with it.
