“
No way!” I exclaimed. “I’m NOT going back to Mexico. There is no way in hell I will ever cross the Mexican border again.”
“
Things will be different this time.” Shadow promised. “There won’t be any fighting or explosions. This is strictly a business deal.”
“
How can you be so sure?” I asked as I became increasingly annoyed that he would even consider going back.
“
La Familia is out of the picture now. Santiago is dead. He was always a problem for us. I think we can work out a deal with Miguel.”
“
Nope. I’m not going back. I don’t want you—or any of you—for that matter, going back to Mexico. The cartel is bad news. We have the scars to prove it.”
“
We’ll talk about this later.” It was obviously apparent that he didn’t want to argue in front of the MC.
I remained silent for the rest of the ride. When we got to headquarters, we all went inside while Animal left for pizza. Shadow pulled me to the side and begged me to go to Mexico with him.
“
Please babe, I need you by my side. I don’t want to leave you behind.”
“
Not after what happened the last time we went there. I will not go back.”
We continued our discussion until Animal came back with pizzas for everyone. We would have to talk about this more privately when we had time. Right now, Shadow was concerned about working out all of the details and prepping everyone in the MC. The MC agreed that they would have Barbara call Miguel and arrange for them to meet that weekend. Whether or not I was going was still up for discussion, according to Shadow.
When we got back home, the discussion continued well into the night.
“
How can you even think of me going while I’m pregnant with your child?” I angrily asked.
“
Because nothing’s going to happen. I promise. It’s all business. We’re not chasing people, nobody is bringing a bomb; there’s nothing to worry about.”
“
I’m worried about my baby—our baby, you and myself. I don’t know how you aren’t.”
After hours of going round and round, he agreed that I could stay at home. I helped him pack for his trip. The MC was to leave Friday morning and return Saturday night. While I was completely against Shadow going, he was dead set that he was. When Friday rolled around, the MC headed south once again to cross the Mexican border.
I hugged him tight. “I love you, Derek.”
“
I love you too babe. Don’t worry about anything. I’ll be back before you know it.” He kissed me passionately, as if it was our last kiss. He rubbed my tummy and said, “I love you too, little blip.”
I grinned at him. “Promise? Nothing bad will happen? I’m so worried about you.”
“
Nothing bad is going to happen. While I’m gone, I want you to do me a favor.”
“
What?” I asked, almost afraid to.
“
Call your brother. Have him help you move your things into my house.”
The butterflies began to swarm around my belly. He wanted me to move in with him. I jumped in his arms and nearly squeezed him to death.
“
Do you mean it?” I asked as I kissed him.
“
Till the end. Now get packing. I want you completely moved in by the time I get back. You can move things around anyway you’d like. Just don’t mess with the garage.” He said as he tussled my hair and patted my ass.
The MC rode off into the mid-morning sun. I don’t know how I knew it, but I had a gut feeling something was wrong. Maybe I was just overreacting, or maybe it was woman’s intuition. He said he would call when they reached their hotel. The clock wouldn’t move fast enough.
Finally, just after 8PM, my cell phone rang. It was him. He called to check in and tell me that everything was alright. They were set to meet with the cartel the next afternoon and would be home later that night. I told him I loved him and to be careful. We hung up just as my brother began to load up the U-Haul that I had rented. If I was going to get completely moved in by the time he got back, I had to get moving.
Chapter Twelve
Moving In
Even though I hadn’t known Shadow very long, it felt like we had been together forever. Maybe it was because of the gun fights and explosion that we had been through together, or maybe it was because he had an old soul. Either way, I could picture spending the rest of my life wrapped in the warmth of his arms.
While he was away in Mexico working out a deal with the kingpin of the cartel, I was busy moving into Shadow’s house. My brother was hauling ass to get everything loaded and unloaded into the truck so that I wouldn’t have to lift anything, especially because I was pregnant. I had to tell him to slow down so that he wouldn’t break any of my things because he was moving so fast.
Once all of my belongings were at Shadow’s house, I began to instruct my brother where to put all of the various boxes. He joked around and told me that I had too much shit. I do have to admit, I am a bit of a pack rat. My weakness is angels; I love to collect them. Cherubs are my favorite. How different Shadow and I are; he collects and displays motorcycle nostalgia while I collect and display baby angels.
When he returned, we would have to discuss how we were going to display each of our treasured collectibles in the living room. I know that technically, it’s his house since he paid for it but now that we were a family, it was
our
house. He was going to have to learn to share. As I unpacked boxes, I wondered which rooms I would want to arrange things in. My phone began to ring just as I was daydreaming about where to put what.
“
Hello?”
“
Hey baby doll!” He sounded like he was half-cocked. “What is my pretty little lady doing?”
“
Ummm, unpacking? Where are you? What are you doing?” Geez, I thought, I was already beginning to sound like a mother and I was still in my first trimester of pregnancy.
“
We’re getting ready to head back home. Everything went very well with the cartel. I miss you.”
“
I miss you, too. Are you drunk?” I couldn’t help it, it just came out.
“
Nah, I’m a little buzzed. You know those Mexicans, they like to drink. We celebrated our renewed business with the them before we headed back to the hotel to collect our things.”
“
You guys better be careful. I want you back in one piece. You got it?”
“
Awww guys, she’s worried about me getting back in one piece” he said to the MC.
“
I mean it, mister. Oh by the way, while I have you on the phone, are there any rooms that are off-limits? Like, can I put my stuff anywhere?” I figured if he was drunk, this was the best time to ask him.
“
You can put your stuff anywhere you want babe. It’s your house.”
Him saying that made me smile. “Ok, do you know how long you guys will be?”
“
We should be home sometime in the middle of the night. The roads should be pretty clear by the time we get over the border. Don’t wait up.”
“
Don’t wait up? I’ll try not to. I’m glad everything went well today. I love you.”
“
Love you too babe. Take care of my little lump of lovin’ till I get back.”
He hung up before I could respond. I looked around the house, thinking of how I would like to reorganize and redecorate. Did he really mean it when he said this house is mine? I mean, we hadn’t even been together two months yet. True, I was pregnant with his child but a house? That seemed too good to be true, but then again, we are talking about Shadow. That’s what I loved the most about him. He was so kind and caring. He’d help anyone he could and give them the shirt right off his back.
As the air began to cool and the sunset turned into complete darkness, I began to get sleepy. These pregnancy hormones were kicking my ass. I had never been so tired in my life. I grabbed a blanket and covered up on the couch. I figured I would wait for him to come home in the living room. I grabbed the remote and began to flip through the channels. Nothing good was on so I ended up watching reruns of “Roseann”.
I didn’t realize it, but I had been asleep for hours before I heard the knob turn on the front door. I must have been having a bad dream because it startled me so bad that I jumped into a complete standing position. It was Shadow coming home. I happened to look at the windows and noticed that the sun was almost completely up in the sky.
“
Where have you been?” I asked impatiently.
“
I was celebrating with the guys.” He said as he tripped trying to take off one of his shoes.
“
Do you know how worried I would have been had I woke up and saw that you still weren’t home?” Even I could hear the anger in my voice.
“
Don’t be mad babe. We just had a few drinks.”
“
A few drinks? I hope this isn’t a habit. You have a family now.” I said as I glanced down at my growing belly.
“
I know. I know babe. I’m sorry. We’re just excited about how much more money we’ll be bringing in. You like money don’t you?” He said as he began to walk towards me. I could smell the liquor getting stronger on him with each step that he took.
“
Yes, I like money but I love you. I want you at home with me at night. I want you to cuddle with, to make love to and spend the night with.”
“
You wanna make love now?” he said as tried to put his arms around me.
“
Derek! Don’t even go there. You need to sober up. Get some sleep and take a shower. We’ll talk later.” I said as I slipped out of his arms.
Disappointed and pouting, he began to head up the stairs. As he climbed the staircase, he removed his shirt. Those muscles. They had gotten me into all of this trouble in the first place. He definitely had the nicest body that I had ever been with. I watched him as he stumbled down the hallway until he disappeared into the master bedroom.
I sighed as I plopped down on the soft velvet couch. It felt like heaven. My body was stiff from sleeping on the couch waiting for him to come home. I still needed to finish unpacking but that could wait. I had all day. I reached for Derek’s laptop to look up baby names. It seemed that the baby was all I could think about lately.
When I opened his laptop, I was shocked and surprised by what I saw. Apparently, he had been thinking about the baby, too. He had been looking at baby cribs on various websites; some mighty nice ones, might I add. Not trying to snoop, but I had to look; I went through his search history. He had started looking at baby cribs as soon as we came back from Mexico the first time that we had went together. While I was still mad at him for staying out all night drinking, the thought of him crib shopping before me just made my heart melt.
Since he had been looking at cribs, I figured that we could talk about them together and pick one out that we both agreed upon. I began looking up various themes, patterns and colors. I wanted my baby to have the best room that a baby could ever ask for; then I ran into a problem. I didn’t know if I was having a boy or a girl yet. With that roadblock set in place, I decided to start searching for various baby products that I might need or want for the baby.
As I was looking up baby gear and accessories, I realized just how expensive babies are. I made up my mind right then that Derek and I were going to have to sit down and have a talk about how much money he actually earned. I made very little at all of my previous jobs—certainly not enough to support a baby.
I put the computer away so I could make some lunch before I continued to unpack. As I made my way into the modest black and white kitchen, I noted how clean everything was. I secretly wondered if he had a maid. A biker guy cleaning a kitchen? I literally laughed out loud. I pictured Mr. Tough Guy wearing some yellow rubber dish gloves while cussing through his teeth about the baked on grease that occupied the stovetop as he diligently scrubbed at it.
When I opened the refrigerator door, it suddenly became apparent why his kitchen was so clean: there was no food in it. There was a six pack of Dr. Pepper on the middle shelf with bottles of mustard and ketchup that occupied the door. “
No wonder his kitchen is so clean—he never eats in it!”
I thought to myself. Pissed off, hungry and pregnant do not make a good combination. I began to search for my shoes as I grabbed my keys and purse from the countertop. I made a trip to Burger King and ordered a king-sized meal.
About an hour after I finished eating, Derek came walking down the stairs as he rubbed his eyes.
“
Hey babe.” He said as he sleepily stumbled down the last few steps.
“
Hey.”
“
What did you do all day?”
“
Listened to you snore. I also admired your clean kitchen.”
Surprised, he said, “Oh?”
“
Yeah, your kitchen was so immaculate. I was impressed…until I saw that it’s because you never eat in it.” I said with a hint of sarcasm in my voice.
