A
ssemblers and fabricators can often enter the workforce without an official apprenticeship. Many fabricators aremembers of unions that do offer some training. The following unions are recommended resources for more information: International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers; the United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America; the International Brotherhood of ElectricalWorkers; and the United Steelworkers of America.

Forklift Operator

A
lthough it is not always necessary, having a commercial drivers license (CDL) can be beneficial when applying for jobs. These licenses are useful for forklift operating, aswell as truck driving and transport ormoving occupations.CDLs are issued by each state’sDepartment of Motor Vehicles (DMV), and while each state has slightly different requirements, youmust be twenty-one to transport hazardousmaterial. Between the background check and tests required as part of the CDL application, you can expect to spend between $50 and $150 on fees.

Groundskeeping and Landscaping

O
ne way into this field is through an entry-level position at a landscaping company. General laborers can advance in the industry with experience and hard work. There are also certification programs available for groundskeepers. These certifications are often beneficial when applying for jobs and could increase your salary potential. To advance further in this industry, degrees are available in landscape design, turf management, or horticulture.

Heating, Ventilation, Air-Conditioning, Refrigeration Installer

T
he training for heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC) installers and mechanics often overlaps with that of plumbers, sheetmetal workers, and electricians. Because of the combination of skills involved in HVAC work, there are a great many community and technical colleges offering training programs in this occupation. Many HVAC workers have also received training through apprenticeships offered by the plumbing and pipe-fitting industry.
Contractors often offer on-the-job training, and
