“I hadn’t really thought about it,” Annie said.

“It should go somewhere special,” Kate said. “How about over our altar?”
“That would be great,” Cooper said. “That way it would always remind us of each other.”
Annie thought for a moment. “If you guys don’t mind, I think I’d rather hang it somewhere else,” she
said.
Cooper looked at Kate. “She thinks Mr. Winter is going to hang it in the museum,” she said.
“No,” Annie said. “Somewhere even better.”
“That is one fine picture,” Eulalie said after Annie had hung the painting on the wall of the old woman’s
bedroom and then stepped back to admire it.
“Thank you,” Annie said. “I thought it should hang in here because you are one of the reasons I painted
it.”
“Me?” Miss Parsons said.
“You know it as well as I do,” said Annie. “Don’t pretend you don’t. That little talk you gave me the
other day helped me make up my mind about what to do.”
“I just spoke my piece,” Eulalie told her. “You’re the one who did all the work.”
“Well, I appreciate your giving me the push,” said Annie.
“And you’re sure you don’t want to hang this in your house somewhere?” the old woman asked.
Annie nodded. “I’m sure,” she said. “It belongs right here. I can see it every day when I visit. And when
you look at it you can think of me and our friendship.”
“Oh, so we’re friends now, are we?” Eulalie said slyly.
“Whether you like it or not,” Annie replied. “Don’t try to play tough with me. If I could handle Ben
Rowe I think I can handle you.”
Annie paused as she looked at the picture. “I wonder if Ben would have liked this,” she said.
“Yes,” Miss Eulalie said.
Annie turned and looked at her. Eulalie’s eyes were bright behind her glasses, and she was smiling like a
little girl with a secret to share. “Yes,” she said again. “He says to tell you he likes it very much.”
