Epilogue
Clara

The truck nearly jolts me out of my seat as it rumbles down the dirt track. Luckily Kyan is quick to catch me and pull me back.

“Careful,” he says with a smile as he wraps a thick arm around me, “These roads are pretty bumpy.”

The driver seems unconcerned, continuing at breakneck speed along the winding road.

“Slow down,” Kyan orders the driver, “We don’t want the panels to get damaged.”

Behind us in the truck’s bed sit dozens of solar panels ready to be distributed to an isolated village as part of a deal Kyan made with the Indian government a few months ago. Thanks to us the village can finally stop relying on dangerous oil lamps and get cheap, clean electricity.

I look at Kyan sitting next to me in the truck cabin. His skin is brown and his hair is longer and loose, not slicked back like it was when we first met. I’m sure I’ve changed too in the months we’ve been traveling. Sometimes I miss the city, but on a clear night when I’m looking up at a patchwork of a billion stars I don’t feel like I ever want to go back to the life we had there. Apart from when I’m visiting Kelly of course or when we have to go back to office. Mira—who was only too happy to leave Ellis Energy and join our new company—generally takes care of the paperwork though.

It’s not long before we arrive at the village, a small collection of brick houses with thatched rooves surrounded by fields. A group of people waits beside the road to welcome us.

“We’re here. Time to meet and greet,” says Kyan.

I open the door and hop down from the truck’s air-conditioned cab. The stifling heat pours over me and it takes me a few moments to get used to it.

I look at the side of the truck. ‘Ellis-Young Renewables Inc.’ is written on the side in gold lettering. Even though I hardly own any of the shares, Kyan insisted my name be in the title. He said it was me who inspired the whole thing, so it was only fair.

“Come on,” says Kyan placing his hand on my back, “let’s give these people their solar panels.”

I look up at him, at his tanned face and his smiling eyes. I can’t help but throw my arms around him.

“I love you,” I whisper in his ear.

“I love you too,” he whispers back.
