Axel's hand stroked her chin sometime later. “Look up. We're about to break land...”

When she turned her head up, the mist over the waves had broken as they neared the unfamiliar sands. The hills that had always waited in the distance were enormous humps, some of them practically barren of vegetation.

Ohh,” she said, awe struck by their size. Her eyes were fixed on the fat peaks until the bump of the ship on land reawakened her consciousness.

Axel leaped out into the cold mud. He used a short rope to bind the vessel to a nearby rock and lifted her out, along with their bag.

Jordan started walking toward a path that led up the nearest hill through dense forest. She couldn't tell if the walkway was sculpted by Nature or man made.

No!” Axel's hand darted out and tugged her back. “This is probably where the cave bears come from. We don't want to go up into their wild territories. We need to fashion our own home, right next to shore...we can move later.”

They ventured off into a small clearing of trees. Several were knocked flat, their great trunks dead and hard. Axel pulled the shovel from the bag and started to dig below the gnarled roots of one, crafting them a new hollow.

We made it,” she said softly, the realization breaking through for the first time. Then she laughed as warm blood flooded her, from pregnant belly to soft hands.

Axel smiled and stopped chopping into the cold ground as her hands wrapped around him.

What now?” She said, her voice crinkling like a thin sheet of tin in his ear.
