But Ben pushed her back. “Wait, I’m not done.” He turned around in a circle. “Can I have a little intro, please?”

Sirens roared to life, blasting every eardrum for miles around, animal or human. When Ben sliced his hand across his throat, they all silenced.

He turned, a grin spilling across his face. “Love the sirens.”

Her brows furrowed. “Intro for what?”

“This.” He dropped to one knee and took Lucie’s hand in his. “Lucie LeBieu, will you marry me?”

Her heart exploded with joy and she almost did a Snoopy dance there in front of half the Louisiana State Police force. But she tamped down the smile threatening to break through. “Ben, you haven’t met my condition.”

“Oh yeah, you did mention a condition.” He held his arms wide. “You name it.”

“Hand over the love potion my grandmother gave you.”

“Love potion?” His innocent look was a bit too innocent.

“Don’t play dumb with me, Benjamin Boyette. I’ve got your number.”

He pressed a kiss to her hand. “Honey, you’ve got my heart.”

“And you have mine.” Her eyes narrowed. “I just want to make sure I don’t have any competition.”

“Hey Lucie, my beer’s getting cold,” Alex yelled from the doorway to the Raccoon Saloon. “What’s it going to be? You gonna marry that baboon of a big brother of mine or not? He’s been driving everyone nuts.”

“Have not!” Ben retorted.

“Have too!” The crowd disagreed in unison.

Ben had the grace to look sheepish.

“Well, Lucie?” Calliope asked.

“Yes!” She yelled loud enough for everyone to hear. “Yes, I’ll marry him.”

As Ben wrapped her in his arms and swung her around, a cheer rose higher than the treetops, echoing across the waters of Bayou Miste.

The sound carried to a cabin deep in the swamp where a wise Voodoo queen stood in her bright-red muumuu.

A lone ladybug buzzed past her nose in an erratic pattern until it landed on the porch rails, folding its wings beneath its hard shell.

Madame LeBieu winked at the tiny creature. “And dat, my little love bug, is de way it’s done.”
