His cheeks pinkened a bit and he fought a smile, making him gorgeous and humble all in one blow. His teeth were white and
perfect
and, dang, if I hadn’t just heard a bell tinkle as the sun shone off them like a mirror.
Damn, that boy is going to be the death of me
. All my worries evaporated when he smiled at me and it was more than welcome. I tamped down all my irreverent thoughts, focused again on walking instead of tripping on the random crack in the sidewalk I always ended up falling over because I was too busy ogling my husband like a complete and utter goofball.

Chapter Fourteen

Electric Feel

Callum

Back at Charlie’s, Harper called the insurance company and arranged for an adjuster to come out. They would issue us a check on the spot the following Tuesday. That made both of us feel a heck of a lot better about getting our lives somewhat back to normal. We decided to get a new place as soon as possible but we’d put it in a different name not associated with us personally. Also, we wrote our professors and let them all know what was going on. Ninety percent of them were already aware and agreed to send our assignments to us via email until we returned so we wouldn’t get too far behind the progress of the other students.
We laid down around four in the afternoon, exhausted, but not even an hour later, our crew came piling in, in droves, and we knew that would be it on sleep. They came bearing gifts and by gifts, I mean a meal fit for a king and a ton of red wine to ‘take our minds off the fire’ but, the truth was, they just loved their wine as these ‘gifts’ were a Saturday night staple if the band didn’t have a gig.

Harper and I rarely drank and if we did, it was only a glass or two with dinner and we were set. I had no idea if Harper would partake that evening due to the stress. I hoped she wouldn’t. I needed her sober for my confession.

Time for dinner!” Cherry called to the group as she laid a very large bowl of pasta in the center of the table. We all gathered around the presentation but before we sat, Cherry spoke up. “I think we should start a new tradition!” She announced to the group. “And Charlie’s in agreement. In fact, it was his idea. Charlie?”

Charlie stepped forward and wrapped a hand around Cherry’s. “I’m not sure why we never did this before as we’ve got an incredible amount to be thankful for but I just want to start off our meals in a prayer, if that’s okay with everyone?”

Everyone nodded in agreement.
“Lord, we are humbled by your generosity. You have given our entire family here tonight something to be truly thankful for. We thank you for this food. We thank you for our health and life. For all this, we thank you and ask that you continue to watch over each one of us, especially Callum and Harper as they are going through a particularly harsh time. In Your name, we pray.”
“Amen,” the group sounded and it was abruptly obvious that hearts were lighter, eyes brighter.
“Let the merriment begin!” Charlie sang.

We both got caught in group conversation until very late at night as the wine poured freely and the food was plentiful or maybe it was that I was nervous and avoiding the inevitable.
Enough
! I told myself. I stood up when Cherry left her seat to join Charlie at his end of the table, leaving the seat next to Harper vacant. I practically sprinted to the empty chair and sat beside her, eager to profess it all. I noticed a rather full glass of wine beside Harper’s plate and hoped it was Cherry’s.

Hey,” I said with a wink.

Hey,” she said back, boldly threading her hand with mine. “I thought you’d never come over here.”

Why? Did you have something you wanted to say to me?” I asked, a brow cocked over one eye.

I have an unbelievable amount I’d like to say to you,” she said, bringing her mouth to my ear, “but nothing I can say here.”

I shuddered, making her laugh sexily in my ear. An incredible warmth spread from her mouth to my ear and down my neck.
I leaned into her ear and whispered, “Then what are we still doing here?”
She leaned back a bit, taken aback at how open we were being.
    “Lead the way, Callum.”

I picked up her hand and lead her to the window that opened to the balcony garden that Cherry had grown for Charlie. I scooped my arm behind her knees, reveling at her sharp intake of breath, and sat on the sill before working our bodies through. I swung my legs over and stood up, still holding Harper. Her mouth was open slightly in curiosity. I slid her body down mine to set her upright again.
If I’m doing this, I’m
doing
this. No turning back.

I inched my face closer to hers, our mouths an inch apart, a repeat of that day in front of The Hope House. I couldn’t believe I was about to confess all. I closed my eyes and breathed in deeply through my nose in preparation but her delicious scent sent me reeling forward into her mouth, devouring every square millimeter of her lips.
I breathed out years of pent up frustration at having tasted her once but denying myself every day that we were married and
she
kissed me
back
. I consumed a passion from her I’d never known could exist. She threaded her fingers through my hair and I nearly whimpered at the feel of them, my eyes rolling to the back of my closed eyes. I clutched her waist tightly, inhaling her breaths as I practically swallowed her beautiful tongue. We traded control, back and forth, back and forth, kissing in undulating waves and she tasted incredible, like honeydew and strawberries. I couldn’t stop myself from licking her bottom lip to savor the flavor.
I lifted her by the back of her thighs and pushed her into the bit of wall near Charlie’s window and as we collided, our breaths rushed out in a huff. She wrapped her legs around my waist and purred with satisfaction, practically giggling. I broke free from the kiss, both of us panting from the exertion. I feverishly kissed below her jaw, her neck, and along her collarbone as she ran her nails along my shoulders, a moan barely escaped from her lips earning a light chuckle from me. She amused me.
Oh
, how she amused me.
“What’s so funny?” She wheezed, the back of her head resting against the wall, giving me better access to her neck, her eyes closed but her mouth smiling.
“You’re so amazing,” I whispered into her neck between kisses. I squeezed her hips between my thumbs and forefingers.
I kissed her mouth again, in disbelief. She smacked intensity. It made me want to bow in acquiescence, to bend prostrate before this woman, if she let me. I would worship the ground she walked on.
“Take me home,” she whispered without thinking.
“You are home, Harper,” I answered, running my hands up her sides, feeling her beautiful ribs, stopping just below her breasts.
She looked at me like she’d just woken, sleepy and confused. “You’re right.”
“I want to yell at everybody to leave,” I laughed into the crook of her neck.
“Why don’t you tell them we’re tired?” She said between soft, caressing kisses along my jaw line.
“I am feeling a bit sleepy myself,” I joked, squeezing her thighs and contradicting my words. She gasped lightly and, again, married her lips with mine.
I knew I would never get my fill of Harper, never.
“Callum?” We heard Sam calling through the apartment.
“Damn it!” I exclaimed, letting Harper down,
really
not wanting to let Harper down.
I kept her pinned to the wall as we tried to steady our labored breathing.
“We’re here!” I yelled in frustration, never taking my eyes from Harper.

I leaned about six inches from her but kept her restrained with my arms on either side of her face. All she could do was stare at me, breathless, making me want to attack her with everything I had. I kissed her softly on her cheek, making her shudder. I smiled in flirtation, a promise of things to come.

I want you, Mrs. Tate,” I whispered in her ear.

I want you more, husband,” she countered, making me shiver as well in ecstasy.

    “
There you are!” Sam said, poking her head through the window.

Obviously noticing the intimacy between us, Sam wedged through the window anyway and shook the dust of the brick from her hands.

Whatcha’ doing?” She asked, awkwardly walking to the bench Harper had just sat at.

I never let Harper escape my arms. “Oh, just flirting with my
wife
,” I answered, never taking my eyes from my Harper. She bit her bottom lip and smiled.

I slowly released Harper and she stood straighter, breathing hard through her nose, her chest rising with each intake. I placed my hand on her chest, feeling her heartbeat, elated I was making it race at light speed.

Sam cleared her throat, reminding us she was there, breaking our trance. I grabbed Harper’s hand and led her to the bench opposite the one Sam was sitting in. Before Harper could sit, though, I yanked her into my lap, making her laugh. I couldn’t stop myself and gently nipped at the top of her shoulder. She yelped in response, making us both laugh.
“I see you’re busy,” Sam said, racing to the window and crawling in. “I’ll come back later, then.” Neither of us acknowledged her, too engrossed in the other.
Harper wrapped her hands around my face and kissed me softly but the kiss turned deadly, heated, desperate. I knew I was losing track of why I’d come out there in the first place and I didn’t want anything to happen until I’d told her what I needed to tell her. I started to peel her unbelievably amazing body off of mine but she unexpectedly straddled my lap and in an instant, I forgot what I was so worried about talking to her about.
No, the truth, Callum
, I thought as her mouth melted into mine. Her moans spurred me on and I gripped her waist with tight fingers, pressing her hips into mine as I kissed her like I’d never kissed anyone.

When I married Harper, I loved her. Tremendously. But after two years of living with her, knowing her the way I did, I was desperately
in
love with her and tasting her brought forth every memory that made me fall, like flashing cards of vibrant feelings and overwhelming images. Our wedding day, the way her hair whipped in the wind that night, framing her face, another still I referenced often in class when I should have been paying attention to the lecture. The first day of classes, I walked her to each one. I told her it was because I didn’t want her to feel overwhelmed but I truly did it so I’d have an excuse to hold her hand. I remembered looking down into her face, her eyes bright with new adventure and a little piece of my heart fell into her hands. My heart tumbled in pieces at her feet as she chipped away at it with her wondrous ways, and it didn’t form a whole again until half a year had passed and the end product was a living, beating organ in the palm of her hands.

The first year of our marriage, on New Year’s Eve, Harper and I, with the rest of our group of friends, dressed warmly and trekked it all the way to Times Square. We all danced and drank hot cocoa and as the ball dropped, she and I gripped each other’s arms and counted down, laughing louder and louder with each number. I remembered her pink cheeks, her ears covered by her wool hat. On one, she reached up and ran her cool gloved hands down my cheeks. I regret we only kissed cheeks. I had lots of regret those past two years. In retrospect, I could see that my youth was what prevented me from making moves, solidifying a relationship, so, instead, I fell deeper and deeper in love with Harper, making me more frightened of losing her.
No more
. It was a risk I was willing to take because being in love with your best friend can only carry you so far.

    “
Ha-Harper,” I gulped, my mouth begging my brain to keep it locked with hers.

    “
Hmm?” She asked, her eyes still closed, her mouth resting against mine.
“I need to tell you something,” I said.
“Tell me,” she whispered but we continued to kiss for a few minutes more.
When I finally emerged, my lips were raw and Harper’s chin was red from my stubble.
I sighed, realizing I let it go too far. Now, I knew she’d think I was making this profession because I wanted sex but that wasn’t the case. “This wasn’t supposed to happen,” I said more to myself than to her.
“I’m sorry?” She asked, practically jumping off my lap. Her hand flew to her mouth. “Oh my God, I’m so sorry Callum.” Tears began to spill but abruptly stopped. “You know what?” She yelled. “Screw you! You kissed me back! I felt it!”

Harper! No! That’s not what I meant!”

No! Don’t you worry your pretty little head! You don’t owe me any sort of explanation!” The sarcasm was dripping off of her but she sobered quickly, hanging her head. “I shouldn’t have kissed you when you’ve been drinking and with the fire and all things, we’re emotional.” I started to interrupt her, to tell her I hadn’t been drinking, but she stopped me with a finger in the air. “Don’t worry, Callum. We’ll go back to how things were.” Her thoughts turned inward but she spoke them aloud. “We’ll pretend to be married again. Yeah, we’ll go back to pretending because that’s how it’s supposed to be. No one has to find out. I don’t know what I was thinking kissing him. I’m such an idiot.”
