They hadn’t had a fight since they were eight and rolled around in a mud puddle slinging more mud than punches. Dad had plucked them out and thrown them into the nearby horse’s trough to cool off and clean them up. He grinned at the memory.

Morgan O’Malley had certainly shaken up their world and changed their plans. He headed back toward his bedroom. She’d rolled onto her stomach, her bare back and the top of her sweet derriere taunted him to join her. Sitting on the side of the bed, he ran his fingers along her spine and then cupped her soft ass. Intense desire shot his heartbeat into overdrive, and his cock to attention.

She groaned and turned to face him. She took a deep breath and smiled. “You always look so good and smell so sexy.”

He dropped his jeans and crawled into bed. Her eyes widened when she saw his fully erect cock.

“Too tired?” he asked.

“No.” Her lips curved into a sensuous smile. “Never.”

Leaning forward, his lips barely brushed across hers. He moved along her throat and tasted the area where her heartbeat pounded against her soft skin. When his mouth closed over her breast and she moaned, his dick went rock hard and his heart swelled to bursting. He craved this woman with an almost frightening desire.

She giggled when he nuzzled her belly button. Following her scent of arousal, he separated her pink folds and licked the sweet honey from her nub. Her body bowed in response. Spreading her tender lower lips further apart, he licked and tasted her, flicking his tongue into the opening to her wet pussy.

Her hands gripped his hair and she lifted her hips closer to him. “Oh, I ache with needing you,” she moaned.

His mouth returned to her clit, teasing the tender spot with his tongue. Two of his fingers slid into her hot spot and she clamped around them. He felt her inner muscles begin to ripple in response. Quickly, he removed his fingers and turned her over. She glanced back at him.

“Trust me. You’ll like it.”

Leaning across, he grabbed a condom, ripped the package open with his teeth, and rolled it on. Taking hold of her hips, he raised her delectable ass up and pushed inside her slick walls from behind. Her hot, tight, wet pussy sent him into overdrive. He pumped fast and hard while his finger rubbed across her clit. His breath came in deep gasps. He was almost there. Muscles tightened and strained toward his climax. Her sweet moans urged him on and the sound of his name on her lips sent him over the edge. His dick exploded, throwing him into outer space. Falling forward, he rolled to the side to prevent crushing her under his weight. Sweat rolled off his forehead and his chest heaved trying to get his breath. For just a moment he let his eyes close.

“Get up, Ethan.”

He heard her voice through a haze. Opening one eye, he saw her standing beside the bed. Her hair was damp. She must have showered.

She appeared to read his thoughts. “I’ve cleaned up. It’s your turn. I’ve checked out your refrigerator, and it will have to be bacon and eggs for a late supper. Don’t take long in the shower. I’ll have it ready in a minute.”

Ethan sat on the side of the bed and ran his hands through his hair. The bedside clock said ten. He must have slept for over an hour. He smiled, remembering their episodes of lovemaking. He’d miss her when she left for the ranch tomorrow. But it was for the best. Get her out of harm’s way and keep his mind on the job, difficult to do with her around. Standing, he strode to the bathroom and turned on the water to cold. Ice cold might help even more, but he settled for the tepid water flowing over his head.

She’d fight him when she heard of his plan to send her away so soon. Still, he’d win. With her around, it made the situation too volatile, too dangerous for everyone.

Chapter Five

“Now remember, while I talk with Bill, you clean out your desk and also take pictures of any interesting papers you can find lying around or in your computer.” Ethan held up the large diamond ring. “Here’s where you push to take the photo.” He showed her a tiny button set into the gold filigree setting. “On the other side is a place to push in, and that lets me know if you’re in trouble. I want you to keep this ring on everywhere, understand?”

Morgan nodded and watched as he slid the diamond onto her left hand. “He’ll think we’re engaged.” Her words came out low and husky.

Ethan lifted her hand and kissed her finger. A smile curved his sensuous lips and her heart did a flip-flop.

“We are. You just haven’t accepted it yet.”

Not sure what to say, she said nothing. Her insides reacted to his touch instantly. The deep craving for him never seemed to leave her completely. Not even after the other bout of lovemaking last night. Her temperature rose just remembering.

He chuckled and slid one finger along the side of her cheek. “I know what you’re thinking. So am I.” His mouth brushed over her lips. “Let’s get out of this car before I act like a teenager and have you right in the front seat.”

Ethan walked around the car to her door and opened it. Taking her hand, he helped her out. Hopefully her weak knees would hold her. A combination of arousal and fear made her shiver.

“Are you all right?” Ethan leaned close.

“I will be. Lead the way. Let’s get this over with.”

Ethan kept his hand on the small of her back as they strolled into the building where Bill had his office. Ethan pushed the button for the elevator.

Morgan glanced around the small foyer. Copies of paintings hung on the drab, olive green walls, stale cigarette odor mixed with the air conditioning, and a bouquet of plastic flowers sat on a small table by the only window. She’d paid little attention to the area in the past. She just got on the elevator, usually in a hurry, to get to work on time. She didn’t have to work. Her friends didn’t know, but she had a hefty allowance from a large endowment she’d inherited from her paternal grandmother. But her job kept her busy and focused, and helped her fit in with the others in her life. The ding of the elevator brought her thoughts back to the present.

She reached out and touched the button for the fifth floor. The lift rose quickly and quietly, and opened into a long hallway. The first door was Bill’s. The doorknob didn’t open. Morgan glanced at her watch.

“He’s usually here by now.”

“Lucky for us. You have your key?”

“Yes.” Digging into her large handbag, Morgan pulled out her keys, selected one, and slipped it into the lock. The alarm began to tick off the seconds until she put in the code.

The room smelled musty from being shut up for the weekend. Bill always turned the air-conditioning up so that it didn’t come on while they were off. She moved the switch down, and air began to circulate through the vents. In quick, decisive movements, she turned on her computer, and began going through Saturday’s mail left on the floor from the mail slot.

“We’re in luck. Here’s”—she pointed to a form she’d unfolded—“the accountant’s report for last month.” Holding her ring over the pages, she began taking pictures of the financial sheets. When she finished, she moved the report under several other forms and letters.

Ethan had gone to stand by the window facing the parking lot. “I see him. He’s coming in the building now.”

Morgan’s heartbeat raced as she took the mail and set it on his desk. She’d just got back to her chair and opened a drawer to begin collecting her personal items when Bill walked in.

His eyes narrowed. He frowned on seeing the two of them.

“What’s he doing here?” Bill nodded his head at Ethan, where he’d sat in a visitor’s chair.

“He said the two of you agreed to meet today.”

Bill looked at his watch. “You’re early.”

“I’m busy today. I need to get started early.” Making a point of raising his arm and looking at his watch, Ethan added, “It’s nine-thirty. Aren’t you late?”

Morgan lowered her head to hide her smile.

“Doesn’t matter. Come on into my office.” He turned back to Morgan. “You were sick Saturday. Are you all right?”

“I’m fine. Ethan took wonderful care of me all weekend.”

“I’ll bet he did,” Bill mumbled as he motioned for Ethan to follow him into his office.

As soon as his office door closed, Morgan got busy.

* * * *

Bill threw himself into his chair and scowled at Ethan. “Why the hell did you interfere at my party, Saturday?”

“Interfere? You mean when I stopped a woman from being raped by a nasty old man and then possibly sold into the sex trade? What the hell kind of business are you running?”

“You didn’t ask when I showed you how much profit you’d make on your money,” Bill sneered.

“I never suspected you’d be involved with such scum as Mr. Brown.”

“What do you mean? You don’t know anything about him.”

“I have my own contacts. He’s rotten, and you know it.”

Bill switched on his intercom. “Bring us some coffee,” he snapped into the speaker, then turned it off before Morgan could reply.

“Why do you care about her? She’s a pretty doll. Not a serious thought in her head.”

“I might ask why she means nothing to you? She said she’d worked for you the past six years.”

“Yeah, she’s sexy. My customers like to ogle her.”

Hot anger flashed through his body. He took a deep breath and concentrated on his control, forcing his muscles to relax before he tore the man apart, limb by limb. Something must have shown in his eyes and his stance, because the sniveling coward went pale, and sweat broke out across his forehead.

Biting out his words, Ethan leaned across the desk. “I’m engaged to her. If one hair on her head is touched, I’m coming after you and Brown. Understood.”

Bill sank deeper into his chair. “Sure. She’s yours. But Brown wants his money back. You’ll have to pay him.”

Something snapped deep inside. His senses sharpened and his muscles strengthen and hardened. Adrenaline flooded his body. A growl came out of his mouth. He jumped across the desk, pulling Bill out of his seat by the knot in his tie.

“What the hell?” Bill uttered before his face went red and he gasped for breath.

“You will pay him in front of me. We’ll have a meeting at my place tonight, and you can pay him then. And any more money I invest goes directly to the big guy. I want to meet him. I can help him more than you ever thought of. Is that understood?”

His captive nodded, his face turning purple. Ethan tightened the tie, and Bill’s eyes began to bulge. “Next time, I won’t let go in time.” Ethan snarled the words into his face and released his grip just enough so Bill could take a quick gasp, then tightened his fist again. “Here’s one more thing to remember.” His fist connected and he released the creep, enjoying watching his body fly across the room.

Ethan walked across and stood over him. “Remember my warnings.” He dropped a card onto Bill’s heaving chest. “Here’s the address, seven tonight.” He strode away from the coward retching behind him. At the door, he stopped, refocused, and brought himself back from his warrior persona. No need to frightened Morgan. His heartbeat slowed, muscles began to relax, but only time would rid him of the excess adrenaline.

He straightened his tie and glanced back to see Bill still trying to get his breath. “Good riddance. You’re nothing but a pile of shit.” Turning the doorknob, he stepped out and shut the door.

Morgan had started walking toward Bill’s office, carrying their coffee.

“We don’t need that.” He took the cups and sat then down on a nearby table. “Let’s leave, now.”

She started shutting down the computer. “Did you tell him I resigned?”

“I think he got the message.” Ethan picked up the box holding her personal belongings and urged her to walk out the door.
