They both watched as Robyn made her exit, her laughter drifting from the hall. His gaze followed Alexandria as she sat down in the chair behind her desk, eyeing him. He would be nervous too. Hell, he was nervous? Her voicemails didn’t say anything other than she wanted to talk to him. He’d taken a leap of faith, hoping it would be about them.

The office space was large, airy and white. The large picture windows brought the outside in. He’d spent most of his time watching television when he’d crawled back from Florida, wanting to get a glimpse of her.

He couldn’t take his eyes off her. She’d lost weight. Who wouldn’t? He’d watch her life play out across the television that night and the days that followed, and couldn’t do a thing to help her. But she had emerged stronger. He could tell. There was a fierce and determined look about her now.

“What are you doing here?” She asked again, playing with the edge of a brown file folder on her desk.

“I gave you time to do what you had to do. Now I’m here to get my lady.” That brought her head up. “That’s of course, if you still want me.” He ended on a hopeful note, with a smile on his face.

She sat there staring at him. Perhaps Dennis had been wrong when he’d said she was in love with him. He should’ve stayed in Boston.

“This is nice,” Sam said looking around the room because he didn’t know what else to say, giving her time to let what he’d told her sink in.

“Say hello to the Director of Fundraising.”

“Congratulations,” he said, nodding.

“You’re a security consultant?”

“I’m part of an expansion of Brooks and Wright Investigations out of Boston. Still have to get the business fully set it up here, but yeah. They’d offered me a job sometime ago. I submitted a business proposal for this start up. I have the backing to branch out on my own.”

They were dancing around each other. He closed the door and looked at her first before he moved hesitantly toward the chair in front of her desk.

“May I?”

“Sorry. Have a seat.”

“Thanks.”

“I…called you twice in the last month,” she said playing with the edge of the brown folder again.

“Three times. I’m counting the third time when you didn’t leave a message. Call display.” The corner of his mouth turned up into smile.

“I thought you had moved on. You really came back for me?”

“Yes. When Dennis called me, I—”

“Wait a minute… Dennis called you?”

“Yes.”

“What did he say?”

“I’ll tell you later. The point is, I knew I was coming but I wanted to wait. It’s not that I didn’t want to talk to you but I wanted to give you enough time to settle into the new job, and to be sure it’s me you want.”

“I’m sure.” She got up from behind the desk, sitting at the edge facing him. All he saw were long golden legs against her white power suit. God, he missed her. “I left my father’s condo and gave him back the car.”

He didn’t see that coming. “What did he say?”

“The fatherly things. I finally forgave him, but things will never be the same between us.”

“I’m sorry. He hurt you. Maybe someday he’ll be the father you want again.”

“Thank you for saying that. The really good news is I got my own apartment. I guess it’s tiny compared to where I moved from.”

“Is there enough room for me? Money will be tight for a while. I just sunk everything into
our
nest egg, and Robyn’s Nest is my first client.”

“Well…,” Alexandria stood up and he pulled her down on his lap, “that depends.”

“On what?” His hand found the inside of her jacket, playing with a pearl button on her blouse and it came undone, revealing a white-laced bra.

“I’ve never had a roommate before and—” His lips found her throat, feeling the pulse beating at her throat while his hand worked the other buttons.

Sam drew back, running a finger along her cheek, outlining her lips, gazing into her eyes. “I’m not looking for a roommate, Princess.”

“What are you looking for?”

“A wife. Oh, do you still have those red shoes you wore to the gala?”
