[CP].
Neolithic communities of the early 4th millennium
bc
whose origins lay in the
IMPRESSED WARE CULTURES
of southern France but who eventually occupied much of central and southern France. Named after the type-site of Chassey, Côte d'Or, France, an enclosed settlement dating to the period 4500–3800 bc. Settlements include cave sites, open sites, and enclosures. Characteristic pottery includes round-bottomed bowls, baggy bowls, and carinated bowls. Some of the pottery has ‘Pan-pipe’ shaped lugs. Footed dishes known as vase supports are also known in the northeastern part of the area occupied by Chassey communities, notably western France and the Paris Basin. Burials are known in pits, in cist graves, and in various kinds of chambered tombs.
Châteauneuf-les-Martigues, France
[Si].
A large rock-shelter site northwest of Marseilles, Bouches-du-Rhône, southwestern France. Excavated by M. Escalon de Fonton in the 1950s, the sequence of deposits spans a long period from later Mesolithic through to the Neolithic. The lower levels contain Castelnovian Culture material, especially geometric microliths. This is followed about 5000 bc with
IMPRESSED WARE CULTURE
layers containing
